The Rockwell B-1 Lance] is a four-engine supersonic variable-sweep wing, jet-powered heavy strategic bomber used by the United States Air Force (USAF). It was first envisioned in the 1960s as a supersonic bomber with Mach 2 speed, and sufficient range and payload to replace the Boeing B-52 Stratofortress. It was developed into the B-1B, primarily a low-level penetrator with long range and Mach 1.25 speed capability at high altitude. It is commonly called the "Bone" (originally from "B-One").
Designed by Rockwell International (now part of Boeing), development was delayed multiple times over its history due to changes in the perceived need for manned bombers. The initial B-1A version was developed in the early 1970s, but its production was canceled, and only four prototypes were built. The need for a new platform once again surfaced in the early 1980s, and the aircraft resurfaced as the B-1B version with the focus on low-level penetration bombing. However, by this point, development of stealth technology was promising an aircraft of dramatically improved capability. Production went ahead as the B version would be operational before the "Advanced Technology Bomber" (which became the B-2 Spirit), during a period when the B-52 would be increasingly vulnerable. The B-1B entered service in 1986 with the USAF Strategic Air Command (SAC) as a nuclear bomber.
In the early 1990s, following the Gulf War and concurrent with the disestablishment of SAC and its reassignment to the newly formed Air Combat Command (ACC), the B-1B was converted to conventional bombing use. It first served in combat during Operation Desert Fox in 1998 and again during the NATO action in Kosovo the following year. The B-1B has supported U.S. and NATO military forces in Afghanistan and Iraq. The B-1B is expected to continue to serve into the 2030s, with the Long Range Strike Bomber to start supplementing the B-1B in 2030.

Still my fav. plane of all time. No one has ever shot one down. I see it come out of nellis air force base every once in a while. Or more like I hear it first. Such a distinct sound it makes. You know when the b1 is flying.

I worked on the flight test crew at Edwards on the first two B1 A's ever built. Those could go Mach III at ground level, but only with the very brave and courageous pilots that flew them. Aircraft one eventually crashed, which ended further testing with both that high of speed and the terrain following radar.

Greetings from an old Canadian infantry soldier. I love LOVE the FB! Those 70 foot wings are just sexy! I always loved the nuclear alert mission. The AGM-69 loadout is interesting, for both the FB-111A and the B1-B. B1-B was only nuke certified until 1986 IIRC, then was denuked and opened up for Soviet inspections. Having the SRAMs internal, and on a rotary launcher was kinda scary in hindsite. There had to have been speed limits with an externally carried AGM-69 on the FB?

Seen some in Northern Texas and also Lakenheath. Nice looking aircraft that looks right so it must fly right? Nice nostalgia video of USAF AFB life.Very enjoyable thanks for showing. PS,What a difference from the B36's I watched as a young boy passing through RAF/USAF Manston in the 1950's.One Manston UK Airshow I was able to look inside the belly of the B36 and was able to see the tunnel connecting the gunners with the flight deck forward,and the huge Bomb Bay.At nights I could hear the B36 fly from the Bristol area overhead towards Germany often over one hour or longer! ^pushing and 4Burning ,Correct. Bless all that fly for Peace and have flown for Peace.Thankyou.

I only came across this beautiful beast recently & I’m fascinated by it! When I was younger I joined the Air cadets in the UK & had the amazing opportunity in the late 80’s to visit RAF Milden Hall Suffolk, where I saw a lot of U S airforce military aircraft and I was in awe and that’s when I fell in love with military aircraft I wanted to join the Royal Air Force , but I eventually became an air stewardess for BA and operated on B747/777/757/767 & Airbus 319/330/321. I’ve always had a love for aviation but seeing this video has made me interested in military aircraft again especially the B1, since leaving the airline industry. I would like to ask if anybody could help me with this question with the B-1s afterburners why do they have them and do you they use them all the time hope that makes sense thanks 😊
@hoghogwild
@hoghogwild 4 года назад
Each of the 4 engines has afterburners, to increase thrust. They use them during takeoff or when they need to accelerate. Augmentation(another word fro afterburner) increases from military power of 17,000 pounds thrust, to almost 31,000 pounds of thrust each augmented.

CR That would be brilliant I will be right behind you on that I think about with my old airline having concord she really was a military aircraft for passengers.on takeoff Concord used afterburners as well . The B1B is a beautiful but lethal machine that had always reminded me of its supersonic predecessor, the B58 Hustler. Nice vid, and really nice to watch one that doesn't use one of those annoying computer generated voices. Good job, people, and keep up the good work. I have a question, though. The B1B carries a 75,000 lb payload, whereas the B-52 carries "only" 70,000 lb. So the question is, since the B1B carries a greater payload than the B-52, why does the US military even need its aging fleet of BUFFs anymore?
@wcolby
@wcolby 3 года назад
Variety... If you need the bombs delivered at supersonic speed use the Lancer. If you need low cost carpet bombing use the B-52. If your enemy is still fairly active you need bombs delivered with stealth, use the B-2.

You will see they seem to use the after burners upon take-off hence the long flames from the engines but they probably have to refuel not long after since afterburners will use the fuel very quickly since it is just squirtedbehind the rear turbine blades into the exhaust releaseing volumes of latent heat etc to up the thrust well over 20percent more than without the afterburner process.They may have to spray water into the engines to help cooling aswell.Anyway it means the range is cut back with afterburners being used but you get there faster.Hopefully this puts you in the direction of understanding? Be Blessed Daughter of Yisrael.
@Hin11
@Hin11 4 года назад
Using afterburner in the B-1B doubles the thrust on each engine over full power without afterburner. The last bomber in the U.S. inventory to use water injection was the B-52G and those are all retired.

I hate to say it, but we would lose more BUFF's than Bones. I grew up around B-52's and they are so iconic. That being said, I have seen BUFF;s BONE;s & B-2's in flight. I respect the B-2, it's an incredible aircraft. I love the B-52 from seeing them so much & their longevity, but I love the Lancer, the graceful lines, it's almost stealth qualities, it's size & load it's capable of carrying, but the BUFF is more a tactical aircraft whereas the Lancer is the more strategic bomber. The B-2 of course, our stealth bomber. Knowing the USAF as I do, we now have a more advanced aircraft that no one knows about. Think I'm kidding? Look at how long both the F-117 & the B-2 were flying before American's even knew.

I loved the Valkyrie, she looked HOT, she fly HOT, and she would hit SUPER HOT!! I have read that she used a boron enriched fuel called ZIP fuel, and produced 50% more thrust to weight power. However the exhaust was very toxic so either you needed special crew w/ special hazmat gear, or they would need two fuel types, one for take off and landing and the other for the combat part. I think the Canadian air Cobra (i think that is its name) used a pair of the Valk's engines to fly at mach 3, as was to be an escort for the Valk, yet the day it was to begin full production for both nations they company order a complete shut down and total destruction of ALL Mat'l, data records, manufacturing methods, blue prints and Tools needed for making them. It was never explained, even decades after the event they have only rumors that USSR operatives got in and could possible gained the decade more advance fighter.
