@@ajsmovieplaceIt’s not great, buts it’s not terrible like many say. I still think it’s a missed opportunity that they didn’t work on a new cut for 4K.
The alternate take/fight is on RU-vid... it's so much better than the released version and includes important added dialogue between Rocky and Tommy. Plus, Rocky offers Tommy his hand of friendship at the end of the fight (which Tommy takes) - this was SO important, as they were good friends before Tommy was lead astray... I really don't know why they left it out 🤦♂️
I realize I’m in the minority with this opinion, but I actually like the abrupt nature of Paulie losing his shit in the restaurant and when Rocky goes after him everything is all the sudden just fine. It encapsulates the entirety of their relationship from day one. Paulie has always had the tendency to lose his shit and then act as if nothing has happened. Just like toward the end of the first movie when he bashes the living room up with a baseball bat and Adrian moves out. Next scene Paulie wants to use Rocky’s robe for advertisement. Rocky just gets Paulie and lets it go. For me personally it works better than Paulie explaining himself. As a fan of the movies you just know. That’s just me of course.
I like all the additions except for the inital bar scene w little marie. Totally different scene, and its not as dreary.. but the fight scene at the end, though its basically the same, really pops in 4k, and i believe they tweaked the sound. Very dynamic
Blimey, what an endorsement, I love when an extended cut explores the characters more 🤔 sounds like a worthy upgrade, I need to rewatch this now, I haven’t watched it since the cinema. Nice one AJ, take care mate👍😃👍
great review - thank you for this - Im looking forward to seeing the movie now - however Im disappointed they did not use the deleted ending where ROCKY actually wins - You can't replicate the emotion of the first movie again, which is what I think Sly tried to do with 6 - It would have been far more satisfying to see Balboa win, and have more of the loss emotion attached to the younger fighter opponent. I think this is where ROCKY BALBOA fails as a movie. Still a great movie though - I am a big ROCKY fan since my childhood in 80s Handsworth, where Stallone's ROCKY movies were worshipped in the community. My favourites in order are ROCKY, ROCKY II, ROCKY V, ROCKY IIII Directors cut (ROCKY VS DRAGO), ROCKY III, and ROCKY BALBOA.
Great review ! Looking forward getting Rocky Balboa Steelbook Dir cut. My number one, is the First Rocky then Rocky 2, Rocky Balboa, Rocky 4 Dir cut. Rocky 3. and Rocky 5. I also like Creed movies, hope Rocky gets back in Creed 4.
Great review and thank you for taking the time! I'm going to have to see the re-worked first meeting with Marie to decide for myself if it is better. To me, that is the best scene in the film. I remember the alternate scene on the DVD release with the original bartender but, in my opinion, Rocky walking into that quiet dive bar in the dead of night really adds to the isolation and lonliness of the character, though I had always wished they were able to incorporate the original bartender into the scene and was hoping Stallone would accomplish this with the eventual director's cut. Looks like I am finally getting my wish but, still, that original scene and the way it was done will be hard to beat. Also, the extended scene with Paulie in the alleyway behind the restaurant that was also in the deleted scene section of the DVD. I was glad they left it out because I felt that Burt Young had overdone it, overacted, with the sobbing and it looked silly. Still, it never made much sense why, in the theatrical cut, he would storm into the restaurant heading straight to the back door, where he would then exit through the alleyway only to disappear into the night 😂. Hopefully, the added scene takes out a little bit of his uncontrolled sobbing that I felt was overacted.
@@icestationshatner1172 Thank you. And you’ve given me something to think about now. I’ve not thought of the scene as a reflection of his loneliness. That’s a great point. Although ☝️ I am thinking it could work to amplify his loneliness in the sense that even though there are all these people around - who know him / who he is etc. yet even amongst a wealth of folk that know of him. He is still a lonely sole. 🤔. I’ll have to defo watch again with your comments in mind though
I really loved the Director's Cut. It's a sad movie but it's a perfect bookend to the series and the additional scenes flesh it out. I do think the omni-present score should have been dialed back a bit for just silence but it's hard to say anything negative about that Bill Conti soundtrack.
@@nickjebeles5601 Yes its like in Vudu the 4k versions of these movies are not there. I made customer service aware maybe if more people do they will get it corrected
I put it up there with the original, weird how the last one in the franchise was the second best one. Such weird sequel we got. Had no clue there was a directors cut. Great review mate
I agree with you I think its the second best Rocky movie. It has an almost melancholic feel to it. I didn't know there was a directors cut but it was very clear to me from the first watch that Rocky Balboa had been chopped to pieces and a lot of scenes were missing
Well if it was Stallones intended vision before the studios made him cut it for time. Then yeah it would constitute a Directors Cut. Regardless if the scenes were available out of context prior. And at least it’s included with the theatrical cut rather than released alone as a new ‘Standalone’release
That's not a bum in the wheelchair that's the original guy that owns the bar that Rocky goes to in one Rocky 2 in the beginning of Rocky 3 when Paulie in there and he says a tale Rockey to give him my best
This is a strange one. Could of sworn I had the longer version on dvd, but the copy I have is 97 minutes not 102 or 116😂😂 It has all the deleted scenes and alternative ending, which I watched back when it was released and made my own extended cut in my mind I guess, because as you were recalling the eggs etc, I was "I remember that🤔" Maybe I have another copy somewhere with 5 extra minutes on 102 but its very strange😂

The PAL regions (look up what countries are PAL) of DVDs are 4% faster so that explains the few minutes difference. Thankfully this was fixed when Bluray first came out.
Honestly - Stallone doesn’t really need to Milk anything. While I agree a lot of character stuff was lost on the ROCKY 4 DC. What Stallone did is take a film that is now extremely dated filled with questionable decisions and turn it into a leaner movie that doesn’t feel like an 80’s music video. Rocky 4 ( in certain scenes ) has become harder and harder to watch. And for Rocky 6 here. Stallone was forced to bring the films runtime down to 100 mins by the studio.
