Apollo is a good person. He was just Rocky's opponent. But he had sportsmanship. All the trash talk is just part of the job. Outside of that, he was always respectful. I don't think a redemption arc was needed. But it was always great to see him team up with Rocky.

In the first film Paulie keeps the ring guards distracted and bends the ropes which helps Adrian reach Rocky at the end of the fight. It's a moment I like because whilst Paulie is constantly raging at life, there is a tiny core of love for his friend and his sister that occasionally reaches the surface.

This is my favorite movie in the entire Rocky franchise, mostly because of Adrian's speech to Rocky. It's definitely one of the best "third in a series" movies ever made, just because of how they were able to do new things with the characters. Rocky and Apollo's relationship changed from rivals to partners, Adrian showed an *incredible* amount of character development, and even showing how success changed Rocky is one of the best elements in the movie. Stallone's a great writer.

Agreed - Adrian's 'speech on the beach' is a great dialog scene and one of the highlights of this movie. It underlines the character growth arc in both Adrian & Rocky. It reminds us to have the right mindset. It shows the importance of having a good support system to keep that proper mindset. We all have our reasons for which Rocky movies we like more but they are all worth watching.

Great reaction Biss always love your commentary. As for why Apollo didn't go for it. Remember Rocky respected and admired Apollo. Apollo felt the same for Rocky. He didn't like seeing his friend/brother Rocky losing in that way and wanted him to regain his confidence. This shows a lot about Apollo's character too as much Rocky. To me this movie is probably the best because the two men who started it off are allied together now and the friendship and brotherly love blooms in it :).

Good video 👍. I can imagine that nowadays it is difficult to make an authentic first-time reaction from such a famous franchise movie when you already know so many facts from the following movies and it is easy to get information. You did a good job. There are a lot of people who underestimate the role of Paulie. He's the link to the past, serving as proof of Rocky's loyalty to a friend even if he's a jealous, lazy bum (best job interview I've seen 😉, by the way). This again underlines Rocky's humanity. Mr. T’s own real mother left the premier of this movie because she was upset with by character he was playing. She said “I raised you to act better than that”. Haha. She didn’t see it as a role. Also, the group that sing the song Eye of the Tiger had to write a song for this movie. In order to do so, they got to see an advanced screening to get a feel for the song needed. When they heard Apollo say “Eye of the Tiger”, they knew that was the lyric they needed. They then wrote the song based on Apollo’s line.

30:08 "Can we not... send him _back?_ I mean, what is he doing here, anyway?" This is a perfectly good question. I mean, how has his presence been of _any_ help to Rocky? Remember, though, Paulie is in this franchise to provide contrast for the kind of character _Rocky_ has.

It took three movies for Rocky to learn how to block and dodge. 😄 It is was very satisfying to watch him go from a fighter who relies on physical strength and his ability to absorb punches in order to outlast his opponents to becoming a skilled boxer who uses speed and elusiveness to overwhelm and tire out his opponents.

10:30; I bet Mr T and Hulk Hogan (6'8, 290) had fun playing the heavies--In the near future they'd partner up and become WWF tag-team champs, playing the "Hero good guys" against the "Evil" baddies, and fans LOVED 'em! The "Take what he's got, make him miss a lot and let him get tired out" tactic Rocky used? First done by Ali against Foreman in Zaire..Let him slam away for about 6 rounds (Foreman had never been past 4) and in the 7th Ali Ko'd him and got his title back. Fun reactions!

Yes, that is Hulk Hogan. Following this movie, Mr. T. (Clubber Lang) teamed up with Hogan in the main event of the first WWF WrestleMania event, they walked out to the ring to "Eye of the Tiger". Mr. T. also 'boxed' Roddy Piper at WrestleMania 2. I was involved in the Pro Wrestling business for over 15 years, at the lower Independent level.

That song was Eye Of The Tiger that you had in your head. Recorded by the group, Survivor. You can always react to it on your other channel (if you haven't done so already). Yes, the wrestler in this is named Hulk Hogan. At this time he was already well know in wrestling circles. But after this movie, his career, along with that of Mr.T, really took off. As for your confusion over the handpicked fighters during Ricky & Mickey's argument. The fighters weren't really set-ups. They were good fighters; maybe past their prime, or not quite top 10 contender material; just good enough to challenge Rocky, but not enough of a threat to him. Clubber Lang was Rocky's first real threat. Not only could he stand a chance to take the title away from Rocky, but seriously hurt him enough to jar his confidence. As to your speculation as to why Apollo didn't get back in the ring himself: firstly, because he'd already made his mark; really had nothing to prove anymore, & made peace (to a point, anyway) with his defeat. There was also the factor of his age. He'd already had a long career. & a harsh fact about any sport but most especially boxing, is that it's a young man's game. You're prime (depending on your ability) is mainly between your late teens through your 20s. Like it or not, early 30s is "getting up there," & mid-30s & up is considered old, for boxing. Even if you're the GOAT. Secondly: & more important, because he came to respect & admire Rocky as much as Rocky had always admired & respected him. It bothered him to see Rocky lose the fight in such a hard way, along with his edge, & the belief in himself that he'd worked hard to cultivate in the first two movies. That was something that Apollo knew something about, from the second movie, where he felt that doubt in himself for the first time in a long time, or maybe ever. In the first movie Apollo was at a plateau in his career were there no good enough challengers to really push him anymore. In retrospect, Rocky pushed Apollo to the limit making him bring back his best effort & show why he was the champ. Apollo in turn helped Rocky to believe in himself, & then get it back again later. As it turned out they were probably the best thing to happen to one another.

Personally this and Rocky 4 are my favorites, though I'd prefer the latter a little more. What Apollo said to Rocky that he didn't have that eye of the tiger no more is so true. After becoming champ, he didn't really have it in him to actually go all out bcoz he was fighting easier opponents, until an equal fighter Clubber came. It teaches us to always train to better ourselves and never let our guard down despite being the champ. Adrian's speech at the beach was fantastic as well.

Apollo didn't have the eye of the Tiger to get back into the ring anymore. It was kind of like he would get back in the ring through Rocky. Rocky was primed and at the right moment for him to get back in the ring because it was so soon after Mickey died. Strong emotions can bring up strong desires and the priming was set for him for a rematch. Apollo was done fighting he was going to now train Rocky and that would be his success. Kind of like him winning along with Rocky. Remember his "you've got to get it back" "maybe we can win it back together" a win for Rocky will be a win for a Apollo.

BissFlix: "Why isn't Apollo going for it (fighting Clubber)?".. Apollo's been retired for over three years while Rocky has been champion. That's an eternity in the fight game. Apollo has the talent and physical skills, but he is rusty as hell and would need many fights before he could challenge someone like Clubber Lang. Plus Apollo doesn't match up as well as Rocky does against Clubber. Rocky's a SouthPaw and has already fought Clubber.

The Rocky series is so fun. This was the first Rocky I saw and it got me hooked so I watched the first 2 then on to 4, 5, Rocky Balboa (6). The first two movies showed how an unknown came from nowhere and his rise to the top while 3 showed how you can loose it all if you make and don't have that "Eye of the Tiger" (i.e. desire) to keep it going. By the way, that song (Eye of the Tiger by Survivor) was made for this movie and became a hit in it's own right. Loved your reaction and agree on Adrian's speech which lit that fire back into Rocky to give it his best. Also sad to see Mickey die as he was truly a father figure to Rocky. Apollo also grew in his character arch and unexpectedly became Rocky's friend when he needed it most.

Can't wait for Rocky IV. Loved it as a kid and while it's a bit cheesy it's still so wholesome.

Professional wrestling was an even crazier show back then, than it is today. Just crazy scripted stories around some great physical fights.

6:18 _"Oh._ The... the... guy with the mustache. That was... in _wrestling,_ actually." Yes. That's Terry "Hulk" Hogan. Wrestling is something he's _famous_ for.

It's important to note that wrestling wasn't known to be fake -- it was _very seriously suspected_ of such by most people but not actually _known_ for a fact at this time. And implying it was fake would almost always get a wrestler to get into it for real to show that no, you're wrong, I _can_ beat the tar out of you. Hogan himself -- yes, that's him -- legitimately choked out a production assistant on a talk show, later on known as the comedian and actor Richard Belzer, in a way that he passed out, to prove a point. (Then Vince McMahon screwed over Bret Hart by promising he wouldn't lose then had the ref ring the bell and make it look like he lost, everyone was convinced they were safe because Bret wouldn't complain about it to the _public,_ Bret did _exactly that_ and now wrestling is known to the masses to be 'fake' -- they still prefer 'predetermined' instead -- and I'm glad. I still like it, I just let myself get lost in it.)

That was a Rolex President 36mm solid 18k gold watch, but I understand because it's automatic it does not tell time as well as a quartz watch.

Rocky 3 is…interesting. With a bit of hindsight this movie more or less represents where Stallone’s career would take him. Stallone was moving. away from the realism that his first films in his career had. He was becoming more of a hyper action Saturday cartoon hero. It’s why professionals critics did rank rocky 3 much lower than the first two and I can see why. But rocky 3 PROPELLED Stallone to new heights and exactly that: a Saturday cartoon hero. And it made both Mr t, Carl weathers, and hulk hogan into bigger stars. Rocky 3 also keeps some of the more drama-esq moments as Mickey obviously dies. Me? I love rocky 3, and seeing it with hindsight makes it really interesting-set imitates life’s sure it could have been better-but man does it really say “hey this trilogy…your in for ride.”

Hulk Hogan just talked about doing that scene in Rocky on the JRE show. Pretty interesting…worth checking out.
