From pine trees to a year-round home, this is the FULL build of Greg's Off-Grid Tipi (Teepee). Ovens and Finn move in and furnish the place, spending the night. They even test the tipi in the Rocky Mountain winter after heavy snowfall.
Greg is a self-taught survivalist from Canal Flats, British Colombia, who, since he was a boy, has read nearly every book on the topic. When he is not out in the wilderness, he is a professional dry-waller. He started his first bow drill fire when he was thirteen and spent the next forty years learning bushcraft and studying plants and edibles. He has even developed some of his own survival techniques and is a skilled hunter with both a bow and a slingshot.

Great video. Welcome to life in a tipi. One recommendation if I may would be to use your inner liner. This is an important part of your lodge for a couple of reasons. With your lodge set up with a gap in the bottom, this creates a space where air can pass freely underneath. With the liner, it creates a dead air space between the cover and the liner allowing the air to travel upwards to the smoke hole. If you are building a fire inside, this creates a chimney effect where the air moving between the cover and liner will draw the smoke up and out. This will make for more comfortable sleeping, especially at night when you fall asleep and the fire burns down and becomes a bit more smoky. Secondly, it helps keep the lodge cooler in the warmer months by moving the hot air up and out of the lodge. Last but certainly not least, is that it creates what is called a "modesty cover." When you have a fire lit, or other lights inside the lodge, you backlight yourself and everyone outside can see you moving around inside. By having this installed, it will give you a bit more privacy. Keep practicing setting up and tearing down your lodge. When my wife and I got ours years ago, it took us several hours to set up the first time. Now I can set it up by myself in under 45 minutes. One last recommendation would be to pick up a copy of "The Indian Tipi" It's History, Construction and Use" by Reginald and Gladys Laubin. This book is considered to be the bible by many if you are going to spend any time using this amazing piece of equipment.
@billparker987
@billparker987 8 месяцев назад
Inner lining is called a dew cloth for a reason, Dew will consternate on the inside of your outer cover and then run down and out at the bottom of your tipi. and not drip down all over you and your bedding. And as stated it will give you a smoke draw for your smoke hole, If you keep your flap set properly, away from the wind.

@dherman0001 that sounds like it was amazing. Bet you had so much fun. I’ve almost got my Quigley 4x4 van, completely converted and ready to go do the same exact thing. Going to travel the country for a year, maybe longer, and check off as many items on my bucket list as possible. I live in northeast Ohio and purchased the van from someone who worked for a news crew in the Sierra Nevada Foothills. They would drive it around the mountains and look out for/report on forest fires. I’ve been racking my brain on what kind of shelter I want to use for the times when I have nice decent weather, and can sleep outside instead of inside the van. I would absolutely love to do it in a teepee, but being single, and by myself it’s just not feasible that I could easily put something like that up every other day or so. Sure sounds like a blast though and I would surely love to do it… envious!!

Admittedly, I didnt have much hope watching him with Zach, as he was uncomfortable on camera, but MAN has he blossomed into something that every outdoor enthusiast would LOVE to watch. Such a pleasant surprise and you deserve every bit of exposure and attention, as you've worked your butt off for many years to obtain the knowledge you have.

Well done! Can't say that teepee construction is one of my skills, but once in Ontario I helped putting up one. It was in 2000. I was on my first of many long sea kayak voyages. That one had me paddling from Duluth to New Jersey, by way of Montreal. I'd stopped at Wawa, on the North shore of Superior. There was an outdoor center there with lots of instructors, half my age at the time. One was putting up her teepee with the help of others, so I joined in. It went up relatively quickly, but there were 6 of us, and some knew the process. Can't imagine the challange presented by putting one up, all alone, without prior experience. But hey, now I can. Just watched your video. Kudos to Colorado Yurt company! Looks like a real step up.

1. We just wacked them- the freshly felled trees) with the back side of the hatchet along the length which ...using the steel for leverage, seperated the bark quite easily. Then we tied them tight and let them season and dry out by putting them in our creek for 6months. Yes, I said dry out IN water. Kept them un-split, straight as, and was a good thing to do. Patience is way more than just a virtue. I lived in that 18' tipi for over a year out in the bush (Australia). I had put a socket outlet onto the side of my toyota landrover wired tk the battery, and when I got in at nicht, I had a lead outside the tipi with a plug on one end, and a LED light inside the tipi with a switch next to my bed, with an inline resistor too. Worked a treat when I still needed to make my fire and cook dinner after dark. Second best year of my life... every morning first thing putting my feet on the bare earth was about as good as anything Ive ever experienced. amen sista.❤

Loved watching this! My Uncle spent every summer and fall in an authentic teepee, I spent many days inside visiting him but had no idea how much work went into setting it up. ALL of his equipment, bedding, decor, clothing etc was hand crafted from hides, shells, beads, stone, wood, wool, etc. NOTHING he had other than his knife/hatchet, first aid kit, cooking pan, oil lantern and coffee mug were mass produced. The first aid kit was honestly there just for back up b/c he made his own "medicines/salves" that he learned from generations past.

As a kid I always played making tents in the back yard, even slept out in them during the summers. I'd dream of deep forest tent camping. When I became a Boy Scout I looked forward to going to a Boy Scout camp where our troop would at least spend a week. However I had some means of making money to stay out at scout camp for the whole month as a provisional scout all the while the whole time was in a tent on a wooden platform. I loved it. Having a huge interest in history I ended up with a center pole 12' x12' marquee white Egyptian cotton tent, with a stove jack and roof vent... I quit a hunting camp that I was involved with to hunt/vacation in my tent. People ask a lot of question when the see my set up. Some ask what do I do when it rains....answer is always, get real lazy.. it doesn't leak... I enjoy the every day activities you must do to take care of the camp and yourself. People ask to come in and are surprised. I have no plastic amenities, just handmade furnishings/accommodations that fold up. Cook box that doubles with counter space door. Mounted on a parameter pole (no bending at all), pack up wooden bed, chairs, table alike. The candle boxes for evening light give of the glow of a peaceful evening, winter, spring, summer or fall. Fact is spring turkey season is here and the remote permit is applied for. Still will be packing the wood stove as evenings in early May are cold. During the day is when the roof vent comes in handy.. Summer time the entire length of one side I hang netting up for a more out door experience... Haven't missed a season ever since...

Great TeePee! The perseverance is very inspiring, but the best part is the partnership of man & dog!!

Hi Gregg, it is nice to see you near the hunting cabin of my uncle Hans. I enjoy every episode. If I'd be in Canada, I would like to join you for some adventure.

For 18 months i lived in a tent with my 3 dogs ( a Bell tent) I left Spain 9 months ago for Sweden. I miss my tent and the life of freedom you get out there. Now, when i saw your film..... thanks to you i have just decided, im going back to the nature and the freedom of living in a tent. Saving some money for a new tent and all the stuff i need to start from the beginning and by next spring its time.

27:03 You remind me so much of my brother Marty. Luckily, I introduced him to your channel before he became a Freebird. He enjoyed your adventures. When I miss him, I watch any one of your videos. There's always hi-jinks just like my brother. Like you, he always figured it out and kept going. Thank you! 💛❤️💛

Much respect for these guys and there’s countless hours of content to keep you entertained. It's funny how we humans can laugh at another man's struggle; I think it's because we can all relate, or identify. You make me laugh out loud every video Greg!❤✌🤙

I love this video every time I see it. I put up a teepee with 20 ft poles when I was twenty some years younger and a longhouse shaped teepee (it was big) while i was living off grid on 4 acres another time. I am 75 now and I want to put up another one to use as a green house this winter if I can,---with help this time! This old grandma wants to build a small rocket mass stove in her teepee to save some of my food plants if i can. Thanks for sharing your adventures.

You gotta love Greg. This man does it, and he does it right. The absolute real deal. And to think that a civilization once lived, thrived this way. Man what I wouldn’t give to just go back in time and talk to these people for a few days. Just imagine the knowledge one would gain!!
