This is Rod Serling age 45 . Mr Serling has been smoking since he was 2 years old . It’s another day in Scranton Pennsylvania and Mr Serling is buying himself a new pack of cigarettes like always , but little does he know that these are not cigarettes just like the others . These cigarettes once lighten they are permanently stuck on your finger . Rod Serling age 45 is about to take a trip into a dimension in which mans fears and all his imagination can come true , this dimension is of course The Twilight Zone

@@prototek100 Rod Serling was known to smoke up to 3 packs of cigarettes a day... So it was most likely completely due to smoking. One of these commercials shows Rod Serling at 45. Just five years before his death. No one saw his death coming but it was no doubt because of cigarettes. I'm sorry. I don't need to go into a huge in-depth explanation but I'll tell you that he was a huge smoker.

Rod was a war hero and accomplished so much. And you guys are trashing him because he smoked. It was a product of the times. People weren’t taught the dangers and we didn’t have all the medical statistics that we have today. Yes, smoking killed him, but it’s kinda pointless to trash a guy who’s been dead for 45 years.
@DDumbrille

What does being a war hero have to do with anything? Jimmy Stewart was a war hero as well but he didn't turn into an addict. And Newsflash: People DID know the dangers after a study came out in 1952 showing the lung cancer connection. Warning labels were finally put on cigarettes in '64, but Serling ignored that and continued to smoke for ELEVEN MORE YEARS. It's not pointless to point this out, it's EDUCATIONAL.

Rod was a chain smoker who died from a heart attack at age 50. Rod sure loved his cigs. He sure must have smoked a lot. My buddy Hezekiah was a smoker since age 15 and he made it to 70, but the last 10 years of his life were poor quality with his bad emphysema and high blood pressure. He crept around like a wheezing, toothless old zombie.The stroke finished him off.

I watched him as the host and creator of The Twilight Zone, so I know I had seen these commercials. What puzzles me is, this was the early 60s, and I was often sent across the street to buy cigs for my parents. I was a minor, not older than 12. There was no problem, no ID required. Nada! However, what I also remember is reading the Surgeon Generals warning about the birth defects caused by cigs. In my family alone, cigarettes played a significant role; ie, deaths, suffering and money - even till this day!

It’s just really not all his fault. In the 1960s, people weren’t concerned or even educated about the dangers of smoking like they were even into the 1980s. Rod was a product of his generation, and a brilliant man. It’s just unfortunate cigarettes did that to him.

Bullshit. People DID know the dangers after a study came out in 1952 showing the lung cancer connection. The health effects of smoking even turned up in movies and television in the '50's. Warning labels were finally put on cigarettes in '64, but Serling ignored that and continued to smoke for ELEVEN MORE YEARS. It is unfortunate, but it's all his fault.

My Grandfather whose in his late 80s is a chainsmoker & an alcoholic but is overall in good shape for an 88 year old. It's all about genetics & your diet, as well as your stress level, as well as if you have any other illnesses/diseases. Now if you look at the world's oldest people what did most of them have in common, they drank & they still smoke well after a 100 years old. The biggest thing is and always will be genetics.

@@jasonparsons7653 Thanks. That was funny. But seriously, if you can go weeks without smoking, you're in the VAST minority, so the rest of your comment is too. Nicotine addiction INCREASES one's stress level...that's why it's addictive for 99% (well, maybe 95%) of the population.

Rod was somewhat uncomfortable doing these "plugs" for Liggett & Myers' Oasis and Chesterfield King during his "next week's preview" segments.. But it was part of their agreement to sponsor the series from April 1961 through the summer of 1962. *"Next year, I'm going to do the commercials........'In the Twilight Zone, nine out of ten doctors recommend you smoke......' They'll say I've REALLY sold out."*
