Rod Strickland was a very underrated point guard who unfortunately had a very brief prime. Strickland was at his best from the 1994 to 1997 Playoffs, averaging 21.7 ppg, 5.1 rpg, 9.5 apg on 45% with 2.9 TOpg for four 1st-round series.
Strickland also averaged 17.7 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 9.4 apg on 46% in his best regular season years from 1993/94 to 1998/99, even leading the league with 10.5 assists per game in 1997/98. Surprisingly, Strickland never made an all-star team even in his best statistical years.
Strickland only made it out the first round once as a starter, playing a Rondo-like role next to rookie David Robinson in the 1990 Playoffs, averaging 12-5-11 on 43%. Older Spurs fans will remember him moreso for his critical turnover from a behind the head pass late in the OT of Game 7 against Portland.
Strickland mostly relied on inside penetration during the 1994 Playoffs against the eventual champion Rockets, though he would improve his midrange game in the next few years as seen in his series against the 1997 Bulls. Like his godson, Kyrie Irving, Strickland had some acrobatic finishes at the rim, could score after drawing contact, and made good use of the glass. Strickland was also a good playmaker, sometimes just hitting the open man with simple passes and other times creating opportunities for his teammates with his penetration.
In his brief playoff prime, Rod Strickland was just as good as Chris Paul in the playoffs, if not better considering his inferior supporting cast and superior competition.

Though as mentioned earlier, he didn't have enough longevity to put his name very high on any all-time lists.

I always felt that Rod Strickland's pass (behind the back)to Sean Elliot in the playoffs, was an EXCELLENT PASS and that Elliot had a DUNK if he had done what HE was supposed to do which was go to the hole!!!?

@@MJ-xh4fl it was a GREAT PASS ...had Elliot gone to the hole, he had an EASY DUNK!!! I was SOOOOO PISSED!!! And yes, they made Rod Strickland the scapegoat.

Rod serving 'em. Olajuwon had a monster game but appeared frustrated by Strickland.I know he never made an All Star team, but I have watched RS abuse point guards like Tim Hardaway and John Stockton.In his stint with Portland he gave The Blazers another dimension.A helluva player for sure.

Yo do you have LeBron's FG/FGA when guarded by Leonard in the '14 Finals? There's a bunch of LeBron fans citing the padded 28 ppg/58% fg stat-line to discredit Kawhi's defense.
@NobodyTouchesJordan
@NobodyTouchesJordan 7 лет назад
I dont have the FG/FGA of LeBron vs Leonard unfortunately. Shortly after the 2014 Finals I believe ESPN stated LeBron shot over 50% on Leonard, however this was mostly because of Games 1-2 and blowout situations in Games 3-4-5. I have stats that describe Leonard's defense on LeBron in more detail but not specifically on FG/FGA, moreso on LeBron's blowout situation stat padding. In the first 2 games Leonard didn't stop or slow down LeBron, but the last 3 games is when he did cause great problems. Now to analyze LeBron's 2014 Finals in full context. LeBron was only productive for the first 2 games of the series. In the final 3 games, LeBron didn't show up on offense or defense, and was completely outplayed by 13 ppg Kawhi Leonard across the board. The majority of LeBron's stats over the last 3 games were padded in blowout situations (being down 15+). LeBron by no means was "carrying" his team in these Finals. Games 3-4-5 Lebron scored 51 of his 81 points (63%) being down 15+ Leonard scored 27 of his 71 points (38%) being up 15+ Leonard outscored Lebron 44-30 in non-blowout situations Video Footage "Was LeBron James Truly Effective in the 2014 Finals?" - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Y02r-Dz5cMw.html at the 2:40 mark Spurs leading by 15 points or more 141 total points for LeBron 51 scored in blowout situations However, the Heat were never losing by 15+ with LeBron on the court in Games 1-2 of the Finals. So those 51 points in blowout situations (down 15+) all came in Games 3-4-5 when LeBron scored a total of 81 points. Leonard 23.7 ppg on 69% LeBron 27.0 ppg on 55% (Leonard 14% more efficient) And again, Lebron stats were heavily padded in garbage time, in non blowout situations Leonard outscored him Leonard 9.3 rpg LeBron 7.7 rpg Leonard 2.0 spg LeBron 1.7 spg Leonard 2.0 bpg LeBron 0.7 bpg Leonard 2.3 apg with 1.7 TOpg LeBron 4.7 apg with 3.7 TOpg Leonard had a slightly better ast:TO ratio Through games 3-4-5, Leonard scored much more efficiently (and more in non blowout situations) and outrebounded, outstole, and outblocked Lebron with a better ast:TO ratio Game 3 Lebron had 14 points and 0 TO in first quarter, then 8 points and 7 TOs for the last 3 quarters. LeBron had 22-5-7-5 with 7 TOs on 64%, Wade had 22-4-2-2 with 5 TOs on 67%. But over the last 3 quarters, LeBron had 8 points and 7 TOs to Wade's 20 points and 3 TOs. The Heat cut the lead from 15 to 9 without LeBron, after Wade subbed in for him, from the 5:00 to 1:00 mark of the 3rd quarter, but even with that help LeBron still lost. Game 4 Lebron had 9 points in first half and the Heat were blown out by 19 at halftime. He padded his stats from there, and he did not score on Leonard in the first half. Game 5 Lebron had 1 FG in 2nd quarter (2:30 mark) to bring the Heat within 5. Then he did not score again until the Heat were down 21 with 4:40 in the 3rd. The videos of Leonard's defense on LeBron in Games 3-4-5 are in my Kawhi Leonard Defense Playlist. If you go to my playlists you should find it ru-vid.com/group/PLl0ny9_3DLnHrpxTCMUqlTphfImNb7qTH Leonard clearly outplayed Lebron over the final 3 games, even with Lebron padding his stats, and Lebron failed to score consistently until after his teams were getting blown out. LeBron did not play well in the 2014 Finals after Game 2, he only padded his stats. So any notion that LeBron had an "amazing" series, and still lost because of his teammates is false. LeBron failed his team over the Final 3 games, and that's why he lost.

here are other examples of different players putting up huge stats under 1st round inflation - CP3 played 8 of 12 career playoff series in the 1st round making his stats heavily inflated Kevin Garnett 1999 - 2004 Playoffs 6 of 8 series in 1st round Starting with 1999 because that is the first time he averaged a double double in a playoff series 23.5 ppg on 46% 14.2 rpg 5.3 apg 1.4 spg 1.9 bpg 14.2 rpg would be top 7 in playoff history between Cowens and Dwight Howard. And it would be the number 1 playoff rebounding average amongst all players since 1980 (the last year Wes Unseld made the playoffs, career 14.9 rpg playoff average) Reggie Miller (Age 24-36) 1st round playoff series averages only 1990 - 1996, 1998 - 2002 Playoffs, 43 games 25.7 ppg 3.1 rpg 2.7 apg 48% FG 39% 3PT 88% FT 25.7 ppg would be good enough for top 9 in playoff ppg between Hakeem and Curry, up to 2016 Had Reggie played only in the 1st round from 1990 to 2002, he would be top 9 in playoff ppg on just under extremely efficient 50/40/90 shooting. Despite playing up to age 36 well past his prime. George Gervin 1977 - 1985 NBA Playoffs 8 of 11 playoff runs lasted for just one round 27.9 ppg on 51% 6.0 rpg 3.2 apg 27.9 ppg would be top 6 in playoff career ppg between LeBron and Baylor. Gervin has 27.0 ppg for his NBA playoff career which is top 7 all-time between Baylor and Hakeem Carmelo Anthony 2004 - 2013 Playoffs 10 of 13 series in 1st round 25.7 ppg on 42% 7.3 rpg 2.8 apg Top 10 in playoff ppg, ahead of Kobe at 11 Dominique Wilkins 1986 - 1993 Playoffs 6 of 9 series in 1st round 28.0 ppg on 43% 6.4 rpg 2.9 apg 28.0 ppg would be tied with LeBron for top 5 all-time in playoff ppg Tracy McGrady Orlando/Houston playoff years 2001 - 2008 Playoffs 6 of 6 series in 1st round 29.5 ppg on 43% 6.9 rpg 6.5 apg 29.5 ppg would be top 3 in playoff scoring averages between Iverson and West Like CP3, none of Tmac's opponents as a starter went on to make the Finals. So here are several examples of how much easier it is to put up big stats under first round inflation. Except for Tmac, all of these other guys in their starter years lost to a team that went on to make the Finals or win it all, both in the 1st round and after. TMac is the only one who shares that circumstance with Paul, and also has the highest inflation of the players listed as a result. He would have a top 3 playoff scoring average under 1st-round inflation for ORL/HOU years

I'm not very active with video-making anymore, so unfortunately I don't think I'll get to do much of that. Maybe if Curry or Durant get schooled on defense in the playoffs by someone I could do a video, but it's no guarantee since I only upload once or twice a month now.
