I’m almost constantly narrating from behind the camera so the duo gets the win for me. The added mic input is a huge bonus as well since I can still rock a simple lav and point the front mic at my subjects. Audio quality sounds basically identical although I think the duo picked up a tad more room noise. Kudos to Deity for making a very smart new microphone 🙌

I've been waiting for something like this for years! I can't believe it's taken companies this long to come up with this solution in a single microphone package. I also really like how Deity put in a little extra thought into how it "could" be used by adding a switch for front/rear mic configuration - AND they also added the input for something like a lav mic. I would hope that their next one takes it a step further by adding powered options similar to the Rode NTG...but this is one hell of a game-changer as it is!

Just broke my last mic so i got the perfect excuse to get the Deity! Super excited to vlog with it. the last mic I had was a cheaper version of the Rhode micro and whenever I would talk from behind the camera it would be too quiet but I was always too lazy to switch it around lol thanks for this video!

I've had the Rode Video Micro for a couple years. I added to my arsenal the Rode Video NTG which I love. I do often find Myself needing small mics to throw in a bag with limited room. So I just ordered the Deity D4duo for $65 on sale. I got the D4duo for the reasons you mentioned partially so I can record stuff and talk behind it to narrate stuffs. I dig the versatility in such a small form factor.

Wow, great review! The fact that this microphone allows you to record another input on a separate channel is huge! There’s so many times I’ve had my levels clip and I wish I had an alternate source to cover my backside. I have the Rode Video Micro already (great mic!), and I don’t hear much of a difference between the two in your tests. I will be adding the Deity to my arsenal. Thanks so much for posting!

Yeah the difference isn't huge, I think the rode is a bit more directional but I prefer the tonal quality of the deity just a bit more.

Not sure how I missed your video on the new D4 Duo but here we are. I like that there's the second mic (back) so you can record yourself "behind the camera" while interviewing someone who is in front of it. Thanks for the audio examples. My favorite feature so far: that you can separate the mics recordings in the post-editing

I have that exact Rode mic, and I love it. I got it as my first ever external mic when I started taking videos more seriously, and I absolutely love it! I always use a wide lens and I have never had it in frame. For sure a good mic if you want something light for travel, simple to use, doesn’t need batteries and is captures good sound, then the rode mic is a great buy! Thanks for sharing your video!

Great video, I love the quality and effort you're putting into these, keep up the good work and you'll climb the RU-vid ladder :P I'm also highly interested in this Deity mic I had no idea existed before watching your video. I was first considering a standard shotgun mic, but I intend to shoot videos where I alternate between front and self view. Since I also wanted to be able to speak while shooting what's in front of me, I ended up only looking at lav mics setup. But this changes everything. What would you recommend for that purpose ? I'm thinking it could be really useful to also record any sound coming from in front of me (which I'm guessing a lav mic would struggle to do).

Great job with your comparison. I was interested in finding out if others who are using the Deity v-mic 4 duo have experienced cracking sounds when in windy situations. That's why I'm disappointed in mine. I love having the ability to narrate behind the camera while capturing sounds out front on my hikes (my Channel's theme), but there doesn't seem to be any other duo mic system on the market. I was just about to pull the trigger on the Rode Micro, but the ability to plug in another mic, say, the receiver of a wireless system with a lav mic on a subject, swung that decision for me. That one feature on its own makes it invaluable for interview scenarios!

Just wanted to say thanks for a great video, very comprehensive. I usually walk away from these comparisons with a pretty clear winner but this ones tough. I like the crispness of the Videomicro... but it's a bit harsh and would need some de-essing. The D4 is a bit flat out of the box but I suppose that would make for more versatility in the EQ. While trying to find a price on the D4 I stumbled upon this cheaper ($60/$64) dual cardioid option on amazon- it's got the same switches too, but no input jack. Seems it just released as well- no reviews on the more expensive one and only 1 review on the cheaper. Figured I'd share in case you wanted to do a video comparison of the budget option with the D4. I doubt it sounds *as* good (it doesn't even have a brand behind it as far as I can tell) but it could definitely be a useful option for people tight on funds who need the versatility. Cheers!

The dual capsule mic is really cool. I've got a swivel mount for mine, but you do have to move it every time you want to change it from front to back. Can't get the Diety Duo here in Saigon yet, but I will be watching for it. It looks like a must for my audio kit. Good Show!!!

I use the polar pro axis to be able to swivel my mic sometimes too, but I can’t count the amount of times that I’ve forgotten to swivel it back lol 🤦🏻‍♂️

I was seriously thinking this was kinda gimmicky (for my use case) until you mentioned that it splits the two capsules into two different Channels for post editing. That alone, is a huge reason for me to want to pull the trigger on this rather than getting another Rode Micro... well that and it sounds better hahah. Thanks for another great video!

The Deity seems to be much better at capturing sounds further away, where as the Rode's best quality is close up but not far away. I think I might definitely get the Deity, especially since it has that capability of recording from behind the mic, almost like an omni-directional mic.

So glad I didn't buy the Rode Videomicro yesterday as I love the sound of Deity mics and therefore was considering the D3 instead, that ultimately is a tiny bit too costly and heavy for now. So the Deity D4 DUO is the obvious choice for me. Love the back mic and prefer the sound of the Deity - clearer and louder and more vivid ambiance. Awesome, ty for the video.

To keep the rode mic from tipping forward all you have to do is tuck the chord in the little slip into the base of the mic attached to the cold shoe. It has helped that tremendously for me

I could hear the difference between the two mics, but couldn't put my finger on it. At least, until you moved into your living room. Then I noticed more of the audio bouncing off your walls when you used the D4. It seems that the D4 has a wider pick-up range than the Rode, which isn't ideal when you are trying to capture audio from the subject you are pointing your mic at.

Interesting.. came for the Rode review but now I'm intrigued by the Deity duo mic (didn't know I needed this but after seeing NOW I DO! LOL!) Thanks for the testing - I listened through my headphones and the comparison is clear. Diety sounds like it's recorded higher/louder? And you can hear the outside noise more - like the white noise for lack of better words? The sounds of ... air? Lol? Rode sounds lower and slightly richer, not as tinny. Outside, it does a better job to muffle the white noise. Could it be because its just recorded at a lower volume? Hmm can't really tell. I wonder how they would both sound if the Deity would lower itself in in volume to match that of Rode's. Perhaps maybe the same quality? Thanks for the review though... now I'm going to research Diety lol!

Using the rode wireless go as that extra channel in combination of the front mic would be pretty sweet. (Especially for vloggers like us who tend to be on either side of the camera at times). I would be interested to see if there is any phasing that could happen between the two mics though (both the capsules on the mic and if you were to use a different mic instead of the rear capsule

It would have been amazing to use it in a windy outside 💨 Because I am super curious to see in the Deity has a better sound on windy days. Otherwise thanks for the test. If you did it could you please confirm, if it’s good or not ?? Because I did use rode micro for 5 years and when it’s windy the micro is a very good quality honestly (of course with the deadcat). I can’t believe rode did not have a double micro like Deity. It such a pain on Vlog interview to have one direction micro. Thanks 🙏

Thanks 4 the content mate, I am thinking about buying a 18-105 f4, will the Rode micro with the "dead cat" get on the way/frame of the shot at the 18mm? Thanks Dunna. At the moment I use 95% of the time a 35mm f1.8 on my 6600 will it get on the way, in the shot? the 35mm is shorter but more zoomed the 18-105 is longer but is it long enough to not get on the way at 18mm for the Rode Video Micro? Regarding the Rode 'tilting forward', the grooves in the clamp are there to place the cable in to and this will stopping it tilting forward ;) And to be picky, you didn't say the whole alphabet as it's 'jumps' not 'jumped' 😜 Great review by the way, I'm looking at getting the Deity myself.

Which mic were you using at the beginning of the video during the "video start" segment? It sounded different than the other two and it seemed to pick up noise really well from that distance.

Thanks for an excellent comparison! I think there is a point to plugging the video micro into the D4........stereo.......something no one seems interested in anymore... but...we do have TWO ears. What would the audio sound like if he rode was plugged into the D4 (as they both seem to have similar quality and audio levels....) and they were aimed one 30 degrees left and one 30 degrees right? That would be very interesting. I use a Sennheiser MKE440 which does this, at significantly more cost and the result is great, audio centered on the subject in front, but still stereo, so it sounds very natural. It is not always someone speaking we would like to record, but everything around us. Given these two microphones don't require the hassle of batteries and have a small form factor it would be interesting to see what stereo, yet forward facing audio could be captured. Can you try this perhaps and compare? I would be very interested. Thanks!

Yeah that could be interesting! Kind of an ORTF setup but with 2 different mics. You could even get a stereo effect by just mounting the mic sideways and having 180° stereo.

I like the video and the review of the products. I own the rode micro, but im shocked both mics are pretty quiet for the distance you were at. I used the rode mic on a moving trolley and filmed the trolley behind me and still picked up voices from the other trolley pretty far away as we drove down the freeway. but alas, i don't think the deity is what i'm looking for. I am in pursuit of a new mic that will work with my new 360 camera and get good 360 sound. if you can find something that is small and does 360 sound please doa review on that. and tag me somehow XD

Hi, thanks for the nice video. I only make documentaries outdoors, for working people (ethnic groups in remote countryside). I would like to ask a question please: I have a GH6 camera and its microphone is good. Again, I don't use the camera in my country, but only when traveling far. If you were me, would you use a small external mic or would you do without it? Thank you.

Thank you for this. I agree that the sound from either is about the same. I am looking for a mic that I can use with an extension cable, on a boom. I had one and a cable but they both produced noise, so I would like a recommendation for a mic and cable that work properly. Cheers.

Hmm, I’m not 100% sure what you mean. You want a mic that comes with a long enough cable that you can boom it without an extension?

to balance the rode you need to insert the cable into the rotatable thing on the bottom. it has inserts for this :)

So does the deity mount if you want them, I find it kind of annoying though tbh. It would be better if the part you clip it into wasn’t also the part that spins.

One issue I've had with those miniature microphones is that when it get's windy - whilst the fur screen stops most of the wind noise - the mics seemed to get super choppy. Ended up settling with the Rode Videomic NTG (much bigger and more ££) and the Rode Wireless Lav (having to turn it on is annoying)

They both sound different, but I don't think one sounds necessarily better than the other, however that rear mic is super helpful I feel.

awesome video, subbed! i just got the rode videomicro and i am disappointed with the floppiness of the shock mount. you mentioned it briefly in the video. can you tell me if the deity has a better shock mount or about the same?

They are pretty similar tbh. But the balance and weight of the deity is a bit better. One trick you can use is that the cable coming from the video micro kind of “snaps” into the little ridges in the base of the mount. That holds it a bit more still. Let me know if that helps!

This might actually work when in audience at concerts to capture the entire room better... I have so many recorded concerts where one of the guitars is completely louder than the other the moment I turn the camera in that direction... I wonder if this is gonna help...

Could be helpful! You might be better off with something omnidirectional or even just a straight up stereo mic.

now I am totally confused @lol. Need suggestion for dual work (a) short film making outdoor and (b) voice over / narration indoor shall I buy 1. zoom or 2. rode mic 3. is audio interface needed ? what will solve both purpose, thanks

I mean, it really depends on the situation, most filmmakers and audio people have a bunch of tools that fit each situation. You don’t necessarily need an interface if you’re going to go straight into the camera or with a zoom though.
