In this week’s episode, we demonstrate how to set up the compressor on your RODECaster Pro II. For those who don’t want to learn, but just want the settings, we give you those first. Then for those who prefer to understand what each of the settings do, we explain threshold, ratio, attack, release, and gain. We then provide a demonstration of how to set the settings and, importantly, how NOT to set them.
If you’d like to learn how to make great dialogue audio for your film and video projects, please have a look at my courses including processing dialogue audio in Adobe Audition and DaVinci Resolve/Fairlight, recording sound, how to use the Zoom F4, F6, F8, and F8n, and how to get the most from the Sound Devices MixPre series of recorders. I came from using an SM7B with a cloudlifter, dbx286, and scarlett 2i2. I am now using the RODECaster Pro for an all-in-one solution, and it has been tough trying to dial in the settings. The way you carefully explained (and demonstrated) the purpose of each setting for the compressor was excellent. You made everything easy to understand without oversimplifying. This video REALLY helped me out! Thank you!

I watched this to the end. I want to thank you, I have took classes at community college and watched tons of videos about rappers using CL1B's and didn't fully understand the Tube-Tech device until seeing this entire video. Your explanation beyond the settings after the first 3 minutes just taught me more than a paid teacher at a school did. I cant say it enough, thank you.

Nice to see a moderate approach being recommended here. The "slammed" sound of compressors can be cool in certain situations (eg. pop songs), but for general dialogue I find it gets tiring quite quickly.

Hey! Great stuff! This certainly helped get my compressor settings right, I was using a preset that was compressing me to -28 dB LOL! Also, what would you recommend for the Master Compellor? Keep that turned off? Or dial with threshold close to 0 dB? Thanks in advance!

Curtis, this is an excellent video on the Compressor settings for the RCP II. I just purchased one and did not own the prior version. I appreciate how you explained the settings and showed the result including the console view. Subscribed! Please do so for the other sound processing. Yes, the Noise Gate would be a good next choice. Also, given that some processing settings could affect others, do you have recommendations for what order to set the processing option? Ex: Should I set the noise gate before I set the compressor before I set the equalizer? Please keep making these excellent videos!
@curtisjudd

I am the same just can not get it to sound right on the RCP2, with the RCP1 we also had the visual Rodecaster Pro App to adjust the setting and I found that so much easier and quicker to revert to original settings, the RCP2 now that is a different beast altogether 😟 ALso the RCP2 App is in my opinion nowhere near as useful and helpful as the RCP1 App is/was, It would be great if Rode could emulate all the functions of the RCP1 App into the RCP2 App.
@thefullsetup
@thefullsetup Год назад
Great video as always really helped me dial in my settings on rcp2. I haven’t seen many videos on the master compellor I know it’s mostly the same principles but do you take a different approach with the compellor?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd Год назад
Similar but the main purpose of the Compellor is to "glue" the mix and keep things from clipping when multiple people talk at the same time or laugh. But the settings all work the same as a compressor. Main approach I typically take it so use it a bit more like a limiter just to catch the infectious laughing bouts or vey animated bits where people start talking over each other.

@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd Год назад
You can set the XLR/combo inputs to line level and feed audio from outboard gear, yes.
@Macusercom
@Macusercom Год назад
For setting the gain/make-up gain I would suggest disabling the compressor and listen if the loudness has changed compared to it being enabled. If so, adjust the compressor gain accordingly. It shouldn't be quieter than before and definitely not louder. You just want the loudness range to be reduced not the perceived loudness itself changed
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd Год назад
Thanks for the tip. Sometimes you do need it a bit louder.
@samfraulino

With the Master Compellor, do you recommend turning it off if it's just me and my wife and a simple podcast? Or do I just a conservative threshold to like -19db and a gain of like 4db? Having trouble understanding this setting. Thanks so much as any help is appreciated.
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd Год назад
No, I'd recommend turning it on. I'd move the threshold up quite a bit closer to 0dB, perhaps -6 dB. This is basically just another compressor and will help when you happen to laugh or talk over each other just a bit so keep it up closer to 9 where it won't do much unless you both get especially loud.

Hello Curtis! I have a remote bluetooth guest through riverside using an atr2100x with vocaster one (no trrs ports here 😅). I hear It easily becomes distorted. Is there any chance for me compressing theire sound before It happens? Its hard to calculate bluetooth/remote levels. Also, I did find ways to connect things with some cables and make It a ”wired phonecall” with an irig 2 (still worried about bad ein). Sure I have the riverside tracks backups but would be nice to do onboard advanced processing without extra hours later. Thank you (I don’t have a pc doing all with smartphone and can’t adjust audio levels in the Riverside app. Perhaps a lot of text, to boil It down: Can you compress/gain remote If guest has wrong gain levels on theire pc/audio interfaces? 🙏

Your "how not set a compressor" is near to be a "how to" for a lot of broadcast applications. For many radio stations a slam sound is wanted, and for this it's impossible to achieve a gool slam sound with this unit (what is simple to do with a Symetrix 528e or a dbd 286...). For my part I would like to see a real limiter in mic chain or at the place of compellor, to be cool on compressor and to keep a control for extreme peaks.
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 2 года назад
Yes, this is far milder than the slam compress approach. I’m not objective. 🙃
