Fantastic. You really get through all the stuff that podcasters actually should know about the device. And finally the answer to recording on SD while simultaneously being an interface to your DAW. That's more great news! I'm having a hard time recommending anything else these days. I think this device is going to dominate podcasting gear for quite awhile. They did a great job.

Thanks Ray! I'm curious on how you think this compares to the Zoom LiveTrak. Maybe we could do a podcast on this? :)

@@curtisjudd I'd have to say at the same price point this pretty much destroys the L12 unless you need more than the 4 XLR pres. The L12 was made for music but can work well in more complex podcast setups but with the Rodecaster's focus on podcasting, they did all the things right. I'd love to chat about it more but what I really need is to get my hands on one so I can speak from firsthand use but this is another device like the AT2100/2005 and MixPre where I can recommend it based solely on the reviews and results I've already seen. Your video adds to that recommendation.

I got one as I need to start doing interviews for the podcast via phone, and it was a good solution, but I couldn't get multitrack setup via USB working. I really, really wish it would do multitrack on the card. I ended up with a stereo mix and while I got all the other levels right I screwed up my own and I'm not sure how easily I can fix this.
@kyleolson8977
@kyleolson8977 5 лет назад
Actually, looks like Audition is going to do a good to fix it well enough. There's always this fear when you've recorded something important and you think you might not be able to use it. I can't imagine what life was like for sound people before computers.

Hi @@curtisjudd and EpoxVox. Greating from Denmark. I bigs thanks to both of your channels, they have helped me a lot. I'm podcasting within medical education #meded and would love to hear what your thoughts is now here 5-6 month later, after the software update 1.2.2 First what do you think about the device now after they added the multichannel mode to SD-card and the new setup for the menu? Second a question on the pre-amps. Do you think they are powerfull enough to work with a Procaster from Rode or maybe a Shure SM7b, both dynamic microphones that a lot of people think need somekind of Fet Head or cloud lifter? In my test in my home studio I don't think there is a lot to gain from a fet head here, I didn't think the his was that much stronger with out the fet head. Compared with my portable Zoom H6 where the fet head makes a huge difference. Im excited to hear what you guys think. Again thanks for two great channels, they have helped my a lot and learned my so much starting up a podcast. Morten

@@mortenlindkvist3390 Hi Morten, I think that RODE has done a great job evolving the RODECaster so that it is a useful tool both for engineers and for people who are not engineers. In my mind, the updates have now made this a good tool for engineers who are working with podcasts. As for the SM-7B and RODECaster, I don't see a need for a fethead or cloudlifter. The RODECaster preamps seem plenty capable to gain up dynamic microphones without a problem. Best wishes!

If they have the capability to add isolated track recording with just a firmware update, I can't help but think they could turn the compressor into a slider or at least a multi-level switch instead of an on-off setting. With the big touch screen and advanced firmware inside, seems like this board has tremendous potential to satisfy a lot of needs for a lot of people with just a few more feature additions or tweaks. Price even seems pretty reasonable for what it is.
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 5 лет назад
True re: the compressor. I think what we're going to find out is how hard a line they're going to take on keeping the effects settings as simple as possible. Sound Devices did something interesting with their MixPre series where you can set the device in basic or advanced or custom mode which keeps things focused for different types of users.
@RedBearAK
@RedBearAK 5 лет назад
@@curtisjudd - Yes, they did a pretty good job with that, although I have found the Basic mode far too dumbed-down for a lot of situations. Unfortunately they have no compressor function, even though they have the reverb and "air" effects in the Music Plugin add-on, and they advertise the MixPre-6 as being a great device for podcasting. I have communicated with SD tech support about adding a compressor effect. Let's just say they were very noncommittal about the possibility. The RODEcaster Pro presents a much more compelling option for podcasters that want to do live shows or want to never worry about post-processing their shows.

This caught my eye whilst doing a search for inexpensive mixing desks. Always been on the lookout for a cheap / well built solution that would allow users to setup a home radio / live broadcast studio. Think Rode have missed a trick with a couple of additions I'd love to see in future models. - Using the Neutrik connection and allowing line level input as well as just microphone. - Including fader start switch / fader on/off switch at the bottom of each channel These simple solutions accompanied with a mini app (CD player interface) that launched multiple audio files would open it up more to the live broadcast market rather than just podcasters.

First of all we really like your style, voice and attitude on this review. You should definitely do radio if you haven't already. The guy (chosen) whom does the videos for RODECaster pretty much sucks. Second we're in professional broadcasting from the 80s (the manager that is, me) and let me tell ya that this device compered to the new audio broadcasting (digital) boards out there has nothing to be "scared" about. Those new era mini radio boards cost about $7,000-10,000 and they don't have more than this device to offer. Plus their mentioned price is not worth their abilities for sure! The price for the Rodecaster is fair enough $600 (for what it has to offer). It can definitely stand on a radio station with great success I might add. Keep up the good work! AJ.

Great review. Wish list for upgrades to the RODE: 1) basic equalization that you find in every other mixer. If this can be done in firmware that would be fantastic. 2) Smaller form to make it more portable. As it is, it is too large to be portable for me, requiring its own separate carrying case/bag. 3) In the future, add combo XLR/TRS inputs. Though a little more complicated, the Yamaha AG06 Mixer-USB Audio Interface is a much less expensive competitor particularly when you do not need 4 microphones.

I'm using the F8 for my podcast right now and although it works great for the last year, it's just a mess of cables coming out of all 3 sides of the zoom, I can't see how long we've been going or levels unless I tilt the whole device up, and I've been trying to find a Skype solution for the longest time now. The fact that this device lets you connect Skype callers and use the microphones to send the audio to them is really wonderful! The Stereo thing is a bit strange that it wasn't included, but good on Rode for adding it in. Great review!
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 5 лет назад
Agreed. Some people insist that using a traditional recorder or mixer can do everything the RODECaster does, and while that is technically true if you add all the right additional gear, it doesn't necessarily make the process convenient or easy. I've got a whole table full of recorders and mixers but when it comes to recording a podcast, I'll be using the RODECaster for the foreseeable future.

I absolutely love your videos. They are no nonsense and highly professional takes on products. I have bought several items off the back of your reviews in the past including the Tascam DR-60D MKII and now this, the RodeCaster Pro. It’s probably overkill for my plans but it stops me having to play around with mixing software and I like the tactile feel. Thanks so much for your help over the years and even when the products aren’t things I want or need I still learn a lot from every video. PS, I recently bought a mic called the Aston Stealth and I absolutely love it but I would really like to hear what you think of it. It would be good if they could add a feature in the next firmware update whereby you can record the Producer Mode output to your computer. You might want to do this in a situation where you're broadcasting your podcast live but might want to record a phone call or clip through the microphone channels or phone channel 'off air' while something is playing on the USB channel to your audience. This could be made to work by having an option in multitrack mode to 'record Producer output only' or another USB output option.

Another useful review. Thanks Curtis! The AT2005 seems to be noisy when the gate is open. I do hear less noise with the other mics. For most dynamic mics the 55 dB of gain might not be enough. Hard to beat, indeed! I didn't find the cloudlifter/fethead to be necessary, even with the RE20, RE50L or the AT2005. To clarify, when you say the AT2005 is noisy when the gate is open, you mean you hear reverberation, not self noise in the audio chain, correct?

The new multichannel update is out. We have been testing the RODECaster Pro with the update. I do wish they had allowed it to capture the discreet track internally to SD Card. As it stands multitrack is only available when you are recording to a computer. Still it's good to have options. The current update is not perfect, but I imagine they will be making improvements. Do you plan to do a review with the multichannel update?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 5 лет назад
Hi AngryRabbit Productions, I agree. Would have been cool to have multitrack to the internal SD card to keep the rig as small as possible for mobile recording sessions where we will arguable need to do more post because we'll be recording in less than ideal situations. Yes, I need to work with multichannel and USB mix-minus and then put out another piece.

Curtis thanks for this video. Zoom just released the podtrak p8 which was also made as a podcast audio console to go against rode: Are you going to be reviewing that one and give us a comparison between the two units. Also when your guest was using the RE20 was there a cloud lifter or any other mix pre amp with it or was coming directly from the rodecaster. Thanks for all your insight and content and look forward to hearing back from you soon.

Thanks for making this video Curtis. It looks like Rode really knows what the amateurs like myself need. It looks like a very cool piece of gear. I am going to order one with a couple Shure SM7B mics. I think that will be a good mix. I was thinking of the Road NTG-3 but may not be the right choice. Not sure. Maybe too big? Regardless, thanks for your time. Cheers!

Their new firmware upgrade makes this product far more interesting - are you going to do an update? Thinking the the Loopback app on the Mac would also be very useful intandem with this. Mix Minus over USB and multitrack recording is now a definite plus in the update.

I looked up the preamp specs and saw (as you alluded to) that it has 55dB preamp gain. Like others here, I wonder how it would perform with mics like the SM-7b (or possibly even the RE-20), which traditionally run a little hotter. Or put another way, what's the noise floor at, say, 50dB or even when maxxed out? One (or someday both) of those mics are on my wish list. I love the layout (and the buttons) on this fairly compact device. Though (as you effectively demonstrated), a tasteful way to label the buttons might be a welcome addition (for those who may wish to change the sounds frequently) considering that this is a flashier device and some may feel that label tape could conflict with the otherwise clean aesthetic. Wow, we live in a golden age when substantial new features can be added via firmware update. I can think of a lot of reasons for many to want this device. Thanks!
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 5 лет назад
It did really well with the RE20 at 41/55 on the demo sequence here in terms of gain (though the RE20 is not a good match for my wife's voice). I don't have an SM7b on hand to test just yet, hopefully some day soon. Good time to be a creator, for sure!

Hello Curtis, this is a great review video of the Rodecaster Pro. I managed to buy the exact setup, Though in my case I also bought the Audio-Technica AT2005 and the Audio-Technica At2020. My major issue is the sound quality. I am not pleased with the sound quality of both microphones. My USB microphones produce better sound quality. Please help me in how I can get better sound quality with these microphones with what settings.

Thank you Curtis for another fine video. My question is wouldn't a zoom L12 give you more control plus more channels? However, this may be apples and oranges.....
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 5 лет назад
Hi Joe, The L12 definitely gives you more channels and it does have a compressor, but doesn't have the other effects, nor the mix minus feature since it was made for recording bands rather than podcasts.

I LOVE this review it's my favorite of all the Rodecaster Pro reviews I've seen, most thorough along with Podcastage but his was down before the update. Anyway, I've watched this several times and listening back the ONE concern I really have about this RCP is that it seems like your voice goes in and out noticeably with that noise gate--unless it's just me ?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 5 лет назад
Yes, I agree. I don’t use the noise gate anymore, too extreme and obvious.
@talkingbuffalo
@talkingbuffalo 5 лет назад
@@curtisjudd Not just saying it, I really mean it. This is the best, most thorough review of the RCP I've seen. I"m scared off by it because of the noisegate. I record mostly in a very quiet environment so you wouldn't think using it matters to me, but I have COPD and subsequent heavy breathing issues. .The Noise Gate (with adjusted settings) on the DBX I use eliminates that from hurting my audio tracks. I fear not using a gate with RCP will make me very beathy, while using it could sound pumpy like you experienced.

I love this unit - it's exactly what I needed. But I'd caution that it's not mechanically reliable. A broadcast gig i did ndearly came unstuck because of a simpyl fault - the collar locking nut around the headphone socet on the front came loose and then dropped off. I couldn't get any purchase on the collar to put it back. I've reached out to Rode twice to ask them what tool I need to put it back on and have drawn a complete blank from them.
