Dear Mother... ...Love Albert DVD out 14th June 2010
www.networkdvd....
In between major successes in the Likely Lads series, Rodney Bewes also became the star of this ratings-winning sitcom chronicling the misfortunes of a naïve young man from the north of England who moves to London in search of fame and fortune. Dear Mother... Love Albert was co-written and produced by Bewes, and based on the actor's own letters home, in which less-than-impressive details were omitted and triumphs wildly exaggerated; Bewes also sung the show's theme song, which he co-wrote with songwriter and musician Mike Hugg. Dear Mother... Love Albert also features Garfield Morgan as Albert's boss, Mr Strain, and Geraldine Newman as his landlady.
This set contains all the episodes still in the archive and consists of series two and three of Dear Mother...Love Albert and its retitled fourth series Albert.
Twenty-four-year-old northerner Albert Courtnay has upped sticks and moved down to London where he hopes to carve out a brilliant career. Instead, he finds himself working at a confectionary factory, Tomlinson Toffee, where he falls for the charms of PR girl Antonia. Albert's new life in the big city may not be quite as exciting as he had hoped, but it's certainly complicated -- not that he'll be telling his mother.

This is a great performance from Rodney Bewes in this clip and should certainly help sell the dvds. Interesting to see an Albert Square in this clip some two decades before Eastenders.

This clip really shows Rodney Bewes' prowess as an actor. I wouldn't be surprised if he ad-libbed this scene.

As I have mentioned above, he was a master of the monologue. James Bolam's fine as long as he has plenty of support from other actors, and is allowed to portray a character essentially as a matured, more serious version of Terry Collier.

It was released as a 45 on the small UK Pop Revolution label 1970, and comped on FADING YELLOW volume 9 cd.

@PeasGraveny YES..it is the proper version, and it's padded out with a 3rd verse. This must be the only tv theme that I know of, that is exactly the same as the show itself! I know the guitar chords for it (even though it's piano based), so I can teach it to friends. It still reminds me of early Pink Floyd (See Emily Play) and a bit of Beatles!

I remember this as it has a great theme tune. Wonder if it could have been released as a single? Might purchase this, along with the Jokers Wild DVD set.

@pollysunday Thanks for the info..just sent away for the CD Fading Yellow via ebay. I hope the the song is from the same recording as the actual theme, as sometimes they aren't, and never sound as good.

Rodney Bewes was not without his own boyish charm....but up against people he knew such as Tom Courtenay and Jimmy Bolam his acting was...lets be honest pretty awful. He really dropped lucky with the success of this and the likely lads...then obscurity.

Well, Bolam's attempt at an Estuary accent in 'Only When I Laugh' was pretty awful, too. Luckily, he had the solid acting talents of Peter Bowles, Christopher Strauli and Richard 'Victor Meldrew' Wilson to pull him through, along with some sharp comedic scriptwriting by 'Rising Damp' creator Eric Chappell. If you still believe Rodney Bewes could not act, I would advise you to view the 'Peanuts' episode of 'Crown Court', in which he played prosecuting barrister Alistair Crichton QC, here on YT.

The problem with bewes was actually his attitude, there's much to be read about his diva ways and his fabrication of stories, that seem laughable today, he really thought he was great, but in reality he was fairly wooden, always playing the nervous shy type

@@adrinathegreat3095 David Barry (Frankie Abbott) published his diaries and mentioned Rodney Bewes. Apparently he could upset people and really couldn't handle his drink when filming and could be unreliable. James Bolam said he only had a working relationship with Bewes, he was the better actor out of the 2. James Bolam can also be very rude and arrogant hence why he never called Rodney back. I do remember Rodney Bewes saying James Bolam blocked repeats but I do remember the repeats in the 90's on Saturday's if memory serves me right. And numerous showings on Gold. Not forgetting royalties from VHS/ DVD sales. The Likely Lads film was on pretty much every Christmas. In the early/mid 2000's a missing episode was discovered and it was shown on BBC it was heavily promoted in the TV guides. Not forgetting the radio series was repeated also for years. I am sure James Bolam wouldn't mind getting the repeat fees. Rodney, also lived in very posh area in London next to George Harrison's castle home.
