This is probably the best song ever. Been clean and sober 34 years now. I lost my son this year to suicide. All I know that as long I keep going forward, no drink or drug ill be ok. Good line, "you wouldnt be you if it was easy" my late sisters words are all over this. She always told me I didn't do anything the easy way, but thats what makes me who I am today. My son just forgot who he was for a time but in the end he gained his angel wings
It seems fitting somehow that I wrote you a long note, and somehow it vanished in the ether. What I was trying to say was that I got sober in '83, have experienced grief and loss, and love this song probably as much as you do. The 4/4 time and the "Travis Strum" (or "Cotton Pickin'") fingerstyle makes it easy to play for old timers like me. It's a song you can sing like nobody's watching and nobody's listening. I am so sorry that this song brings your loss to mind, but I guess you experience both joy and tears like I do when I hear it. Although I'm just a guy who's played Americana since high school -- sixty years -- I've never been very good at it, and I've always said that I wish I could write just one song this good. So I'm grateful to Rodney for doing what so many of us have longed to do. Maybe there's still time. It ain't over yet. Cheers - T👍🏼
I'm sorry to hear about your loss. It might not seem like much but reach out anytime and you can find me if you need to talk. About anything or nothing. 😊
It's a crying ass shame that this isn't played on every radio station in America. What a great song! Rodney Crowell is at the top of the singer songwriter genre and keeps getting better.
Rodney knows that radio airplay ain't everything. He learned that at the hands of the master, guy clark, who just kept churning out masterpieces while the airwaves mostly ignored him.
Occasionally while tripping around on You Tube I'll come across a song that I haven't heard before that I consider to be nothing short of brilliant. That just happened again. Thank you Rodney.
Found it just that way this morning. Just me, my coffee & Rodney. I’ve always appreciated his deft talents as a songwriter, and his plaintive voice. He’s the guy Vince Gill calls “the best songwriter in the world”. Thanks for posting this.
Was wondering who the harmonica player is? Perfect indeed.Thanks.Seeing Rodney Crowell here in the UK in July. Saw him about 20 yrs back. Looking fwd to it!! :)
Way, way, back, when Rodney and Roseanne were married, they were on Canadian TV, from a recoding studio in Hamilton, Ontario, ( possibly Daniel Lanois' studio ). They played a bunch of songs, accompanied by Albert Lee. We didn't have cable, and it was a late night find. I just happened upon it.
The greatest artists and songs never are. "Popular" music of all genres is a direct reflection of why vanilla ice cream is the most popular ice cream flavor in America.
It's hell to get old, this song makes me look back on my life and what I've been and won and lost. Some underrated folks giving us another great song .
Congrats on 34 years. I'd have 26 if I'd stayed stopped but I've got an honest 14 months now. Saw Rodney and Roseanne separately at the Paradise a block from where I lived in Brookline, MA in the late '70s. I was already a fan at that time.@@garrylines1988
A testament to how much they truly care for one another. It's easy to write someone out of your life when you don't care. No so much so, when you love them.
One of the most beautifully sad and profoundly heartfelt songs I have heard in my life. Rodney is pure genius. Have listened to it many, many times and it still brings tears to my eyes every time.
Man this song has something, Played it 100 times or more lately. Usually can’t stand cliched country videos but love this. So understated. Best country song in living memory
right? I have been a fan for a very long time (30 yrs?). He gets no play in my area on the radio since Diamonds and Dirt and most country music bores me. I am late to the game on this song. I play it A LOT
@@karlwelde5496 He doesn't play in the Chicago area too often. I had tickets at Windy City Winery when covid hit and the concert was postponed 2X. I was going to treat two friends, who are in their 40's, to their first exposure to Rodney. Sadly, after the second postponement they bowed out. It's a missed opportunity I will always regret. Now I troll his tour page to see if he's going to be anywhere in the area. Nothing yet (I missed an opportunity when he was in Evanston IL. By the time I saw the tickets they were SRO, I can't do SRO. I want good seats or I don't go).
1980, Birmingham, AL. Saw Roseanne Cash at a bar where teenagers would get a bite to eat when taking a break from swimming in the day and the owner would have an occasional concert at night. She invited a ‘guest’ to sing with her, Rodney. I seized the moment, drove to my house, grabbed an album of each, got them autographed, and have them till this day.
I keep coming back to this video, I absolutely love Rodney Crowell, especially this 2016 song, featuring John Paul White and the wonderful Roseanne Cash, what a talented trio of musicians. I can’t wait to see Rodney again!!❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you so much for the love ❤️ I appreciate YOU ! I hope you will never stop listening to my music 🎶.. If you don’t mind it will only take a moment kindly drop me your hangouts or email to so I can get in touch with you privately ❤️
It's like I'm sitting at a bus stop waiting for a train Exactly how I got here is hard to explain My heart's in the right place, what's left of it I guess My heart ain't the problem, it's my mind that's a total mess With these rickety old legs and watery eyes It's hard to believe that I could pass for anybody's prize Here's what I know about the gifts that God gave You can't take 'em with you when you go to the grave It ain't over yet, ask someone who ought to know Not so very long ago we were both hung out to dry It ain't over yet, you can mark my word I don't care what you think you heard, we're still learning how to fly It ain't over yet For fools like me who were built for the chase Takes the right kind of woman to help you put it all in place It only happened once in my life, but man you should have seen Her hair two shades of foxtail red, her eyes some far out sea blue green I got caught up making a name for myself, you know what that's about One day your ship comes rolling in and the next day it rolls right back out You can't take for granted none of this shit The higher up you fly boys, the harder you get hit It ain't over yet, I'll say this about that You can get up off the mat or you can lay there till you die It ain't over yet, here's the truth my friend You can't pack it in and we both know why It ain't over yet Silly boys blind to get there first Think of second chances as some kind of curse I've known you forever and ever it's true If you came by it easy, you wouldn't be you Make me laugh, you make me cry, you make me forget myself Back when down on my luck kept me up for days You were there with the right word to help me crawl out of the maze And when I almost convinced myself I was hipper than thou You stepped up with a warning shot fired sweet and low across the bow No you don't walk on water and your sarcasm stings But the way you move through this old world sure makes a case for angel wings I was halfway to the bottom when you threw me that line I quote you now verbatim, "Get your head out of your own behind" It ain't over yet, what you wanna bet One more cigarette ain't gonna send you to the grave It ain't over yet, I've seen your new girlfriend Thinks you're the living end, great big old sparkle in her eye It ain't over yet
It's so great to see Rodney and Rosanne are still friends and sing on each others albums and the addition of John Paul White was really nice. Great song, love it. Life lessons.
If you watch the promotion interview you will hear John Paul struggle to lay claim to authoring It AINT Over Yet while Rodney coaxes and fills in for any doubt….I wrote this
..absolutely love this song..listen to often...in the comments people talk about the greatness of rodney, roseanne, and john paul, and yet not so much about the brilliance of mickey rafael...his contribution is wonderfull
Congratulations to Rodney on winning the Americana Award for Song of the Year for "It Ain't Over Yet" from his Close Ties album...a well deserved award for a beautiful song from a masterpiece album.
Country is not dead as long as you look for it. Glad to see the greats still putting out great music with meaning. Great interview on CBS This Morning with Rodney this morning.
When you feel it down inside you. The tears just come out without warning. That's real music. It saddens me to think that I was walking around this world without this music in my life. This is a fitting song for what trials I have going on in my life right now.
It ain't over yet You can get up off the mat... The spirit behind the music is for you, and all of us As Rodney said to me when he signed my book and CD after a concert, God bless you, too. There is healing and strength in the tears. Grab it.
I paraphrase Rodney Crowell lament in a previous song, that he's no Bob Dylan....but I beg to differ Mr. Crowell. Please continue to write the songs that inspire us.
Every time I watch this video, I am struck by new revelations - excellent job by Rodney, Rosanne, and John Paul. You made it all come together perfectly.
A hymn. The perfect comment. I’m not religious by any means but you’re so right. Good morning from Houston. I checked out your channel of blues videos. Jimmie and Kim, Sonny Landreth, Bobby “Blue” Bland. Very cool.
Every song that has ever featured Rosanne Cash has been made better for it. She's good by herself but is the 'cherry on top ' when she sings with others.
Can we talk about how great the symbolism is with Rosanna she walks in like an angel or maybe a demon but definitely a badass and then when she's singing into the mirror on her ex-husband song whoever put this video together is amazing on top of the already amazing song
Sitting here crying. Beautiful. THIS is what Rodney does. So glad to hear you two singing together again. Voices made for each other. Blessings and love.
My husband played this song in our car one day and "Oh my", such a wonderful song full of feeling and emotions, I didn't even know who Rodney Crowell was until I heard the song and asked "who sings this?" I love the whole album "Close Ties". you can understand my joy when I found out he was going to play at a fundraiser here in New Braunfels, Texas on 9/9/18. I'm so there and very exited!!
Man if this song doesn't get your juices flowing, you need to see a doctor. Especially for the those of us that have had some of the highs and lows that life has to offer as we age.
This song has helped me more then words could explain. I am a singer-songwriter from Houston TX as well. My mom was signed with Conway when she was 17, and I wrote a song about it last night. I hadn't written a song in 2 years, so thank you. I was moved by an interview you did. You said "sometimes the songwriter's job is to observe". That statement changed my perspective on songwriting. I wish you would do a songwriters workshop in Houston sometime. I am also a huge fan of John Paul White. I love the call and response play on words between your versus and courses. If I never get a chance to meet you I just want to say thank you. I have so much more I want to say but I will stop now. I love the song
3rd time back again....just a beautiful video production...everything done so well....great song and Miss Cash adds that certain element that money just can`t buy.....wow.....this is an example of why Nashville is the music capitol of the world.....
My God! He's got another hit on his hands! I'm sure he doesn't mind that but he seems to have a message he is trying to get out in all his recent writing. The message is the thing, you write to get closer to something, someone. It is really a gift to keep expressing this stuff and have the feelings readily understood. Another heart felt gem here.
As one comment above states, this is a song about redemption, healing, and God's grace. It may be "about" Guy Clark or whoever; and as with all great art it's about me. And you, and all who have commented here that the song touches.
Brings a tear, a smile and deep thoughts of what we have done. What can be better in a song that makes a heart heavy and yet soar across the heaven of our souls.
There's just no improvement possible on this one. Filled with reality and emotions all in the right places. Old age creeps up on you, but that doesn't mean you have to give in, life is full of trials.
I loved that group and was so upset when they broke up, I never thought I could see either one without the other. I have to say I’ve enjoyed all of his music since, Joy doesn’t seem to carry on as easily. John was the real talent behind that band.
When is Rodney Crowell will ever come to Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada 🇨🇦 Please? I love this gentleman's music, he is a genius writer and singer. Fr: Canada with love ❤
I don't know MIckey Raphael, but wanted to know who the harpist is. Thanks for typing his name. Now I can go down the RU-vid rabbit hole looking for more of his work!
Heck of a tune right there! Poetry at it's best and I truly miss that. Such honesty, humbleness, and all things that modern country seems to have forgotten! Great harmony, pickin', a great story!!!
Lisa, Joel... You two have been my happiness, my best and blessed friends, the loves of my life all of these years. I would not be here without you. Saying that I will miss you is so simple cliche compared to your genius IQs but I fall short of the right words. My heart physically hurts to leave but you two have to know that you have been a glimpse of God's goodness, kindness, and patience for me. You two are more precious than any gem on this earth and I would take a bullet for you anyday. You are priceless. I feel God's hope because of the examples, trials, love, and forgiveness that you we have experienced together. It ain't over my yet my friends! I love you both. I will miss you every day of my life... Give you my word. Until we meet again. ♡
My favorite thing about Rodney Crowell? Perspective. He makes it clear it's all in your perspective. He still tells it like it is and how we take it is our perspective. What another great song by him!!
Incredibly beautiful song. Poignant lyrics, and exceptional vocals by Rodney, along with Rosanne Cash and John Paul White. Rodney's still a powerhouse when it comes to writing or singing...W-O-W!!!
First time I've heard Rodney sing anything Clicked on it to hear Rosanne what a surprise Love this song Will hear a lot more Rodney Crowell now and John Paul White
I gotta say that I usually stay away from this type of music, but man have I been missing out. love it. every aspect of the song. great job to everyone who worked on this!
