We were very fortunate to sit down with Rodney Mullen for the "Tony Hawk The Perfect Storm" piece to discuss what he believes the definition of skateboarding is, what Tony Hawk means to skateboarding and how the Tony Hawk Pro Skater video games affected skateboarding as a whole. Rodney enlightens us beyond our wildest imagination. Sit back and relax while Rodney dives deep into historical skate stories behind the first ever 900, skate innovation, getting kicked out of spots, his relationship with Tony Hawk, The Olympics, Powell Peralta and the Bones Brigade, early contest skating, the language of skating, video parts, freestyle and much more. Skaters mentioned: Tony Hawk, Bob Burnquist, Danny Way, Rob Sluggo Boyce, Stacy Peralta and more.
There are still some Tony Hawk Limited Edition signed boards are available now at www.storiedskateboarding.com

@@johnnycoolguy9554 exactly. When I heard him speak about the language of skateboarding, how modular and adaptive and perfectly descriptive to a scientific level of precision it is, all I could think was, "yeah, Rodney, that was mostly your doing. Sure, many others contributed to it, but you were one of the most influential elements in creating that system and redefining the way we see and experience skateboarding even today. So thank you." The man is so humble and so quick to commend the work of others that just by listening to him, you wouldn't necessarily realize how much of the vocabulary and base structural composition of skateboarding was born from his incredible mind. I just hope people realize the immeasurable impact that Rodney Mullen had on the artform of skating and the community surrounding it. Absolute legend. Man listening to Rodney you can just tell how present he is. Skateboarding really brings that out in people. You can't be in your head and you really learn to enjoy life for the fleeting collection of moments it is. It really is fascinating how the world has always tried to push skateboarding into the world of "sport" with contests and various other things. And through each generation it always pushes back. It truly is an art beyond what "art" can even be described as. Anyone in skateboarding can do an NBD, and someone can do a trick so beautifully that it will make you forget that anyone else has ever done it.

His strict parents had alot resistance in the beginning regarding him skateboarding. Luckily Stacy Peralta went and pleaded with them to let Rodney go adroad to competitions. Which enabled him to follow his true passion. The pressures were huge to stay home, work and help the family like everyone else where theyre from . His father was really strict and didnt support his son skating at all, because he thought it was childish and he didnt believe it could be an actual respectable paying profession. So Rodney practiced his routines at night after his family obligations. All that stress affected him socially and he didnt like doing interviews, and was initially an outsider. He was quirky and misunderstood by other skaters who mocked him in the beginning.. But the Bones brigade /Powell Peralta skaters and eventually the world would realized he was lightening in a bottle.. And would become the King of Flatland Freestyle. .Ive got mad respect for Rodney above all others in pro skateboarding simply for what he went through to be there. Those teenage years are hard enough but finding ones self, while polishing his craft to perfection, and being the literal rope in a tug of war between parents and promoter must have been really stressful place to be.. under the microscope of fame and the weight of guilt from leaving home to follow his dream would have made most folks more reserved. or just plain antisocial at best. But he used all that angst for fuel and kept his focus on his ultimate goal. The pressures he internalized and handled as a minor back then.. (and without airing it out in the media publicly, not for sympathy nor for fame or respect) im sure, helped shape him into the insightful gem of a person we have today. Also his parents came to their senses after winning a couple competitions and have fully supported him and his choice to skate since. i would imagine they realized they were wrong about his potential as a young man and about skatboarding in general.

He also invented the flatground ollie, nobody had figured out how to pop the board up back then. He invented nearly every basic flip trick and many freestyle tricks and grinds like the darkslide or primo slides. I find it incredibly impressive how he was able to transition from competing in freestyle to street when that became popular in the ‘90s. I remember him saying it was extremely difficult and he did not like it at first. I guess he had to get more used to tricks at speed, gaps, grinds, etc.

This guy influenced so much of my early teenage years, his autobiography gave me so much insight when I was about 13. 18 years later I still reference it.

Read it last year, totally inspiring, grounding and centering, found it to be one of the most useful books I've read to date, bought a casio watch from a second hand store, and dug into skating for my health, it takes humble judgement to keep pushing at 40, it's fun to see what comes naturally vs a hard wall of no

I started skating when I was ten and I'm now forty eight and still ask myself what skateboarding is. What it means to be a skater and its place in society. Is it an art or is it a science? Does it float somewhere between the two. I've never really been able to come to a satisfactory conclusion but listening to this interview is as close as I've ever come to finding the answer.

Rod is so humble he just let the fact the interviewer didn’t ask him about the real pinnacle moment in skating, that every skater called what he did “magic”, just not bring it up and build up his friend when asked about him. Respect to the man that invented magic flips, landed impossibles, gave imagination to every skater to pursue the limitless bounds of imagination. The 900 was never possible without Rodney showing that skating had no boundaries as long as the physics were there and the driver was hungry for it.

I will be moved to tears when i attempt to grasp the gravity of what Rodney Mullens skateboard meant to him...and what he meant to all of skateboarding in return...the power in that is mind blowing. And it's another incredible example of love and the human experience. Staceys Peraltas documentaries arent just magnificent documentaries...they are works of love especially when looking at Dogtown and Bones Brigade. I know Jay Adams changed my life and made it just a little bit better...and so did my skateboard.
