Phillip Sear plays a piece derived in 1896 from music to an 1894 pantomime - 'Pochard' - by the Austrian composer Rodolphe Berger (1864-1916).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rodolphe Berger (1864-1916) was born in Vienna, but made his career in France from around 1890, where he became famous for waltzes and operettas. Apparently he is better known now for the Art Nouveau covers which appeared on much of his sheet music. Although this piece is outwardly quite generic, it is enlivened by some unexpected shifts into distant keys. I know little about the pantomime, except that it was written by the French playwright Max Maurey (1866-1947). The piece is dedicated to Madamoiselle Rivolta, a star dancer of the period who probably appeared in the pantomime. My thumbnail shows a panel entitled 'Pantomime' painted in the late 1890s by the French Belle Époque poster artist Jules Chéret (1836-1932).

beautiful little piece! Perhaps this composer made his career in france, but for me this piece clearly covers somehow the coffee house feeling of vienna :-)
