Her style is so incredibly unique. It blows my mind that after all this time somebody can look at an instrument as well developed as the guitar and come up with a completely new way to play it. "String instrument, nah fam, this here is a percussion instrument"
I saw them live in 2009 at the Moore Theatre (IIRC) in Seattle. At one point they are playing a song (I don't know which one, I didn't recognize it from their album at the time) with four parts, Melody, Harmony, Percussion, and for want of a better term given they weren't playing a bass, but it served the purpose of one... "bassline". It TRULY sounded like four instruments. I thought Rodrigo was playing the Melody and Bassline, and Gabriela was playing the Harmony and Percussion. After about 2 minutes Rodrigo stands up and walks off stage, while Gabriela keeps playing.... But the Melody, Percussion, and Bassline all continued without missing a single beat. She had been playing all three the entire time and he had just been playing the Harmony. Then she morphed it and played the full Melody, a simplified Harmony, the full Percussion, and a simplified Bassline herself. I have never seen her do anything at that level since. This was around the time they had to take a break from touring because they worked themselves sick practicing and touring without any breaks, so it might just be practicing to play at that level takes too much out of her to play at that level anymore, but it was the greatest guitar playing I have ever seen or heard of. I don't know why she isn't lauded as the greatest of all time, though it could be because she doesn't quite reach that level anymore, and because apparently there are no recordings of it? I have never seen any recordings of it anyway.
