Hey, nice video. Just a couple of tips from a guy who owns an Ally already for a couple of months. If you set a custom wattage profile of 17-18 Watts for on the go you can still play the triple A titles fine with decent (not great) battery life. 17 Watts gives a really good performance jump in those titles compared to 15 Watts. You definetly should not expect the same performance as plugged in but playing CP2077 with this on the go with 900P resolution gives you good 40-45 fps on average depending on your graphics settings. Furthermore with the newest updates you can easily switch of CPU Boost which also extends your batterylife a bit. In most games you don't need it.
@GarrettCrespo

I have actually been playing with those options after the video. The battery life still isn't ideal, but it is nice that you have the ability to tweak things like that.

Pretty sure the first thing every ROG Ally owner should do is eventually upgrade the internal SSD to a 1TB or 2TB version , prices are now relatively low and totally worth it

Had my ally pretty much since release,never used the sd card, I put a 2tb ssd in it so no need. I love it, take it everywhere with me, I play aaa games on the train to work on 18w. I have a 1hr trip and it lasts the whole time. Will eventually put a power bank for longer trips but haven’t needed to so far. I have a good pc at home but I hardly use it now, id just rather use the ally for the portability and convenience of it. If they come out with an ally 2 in a few years I’ll definitely buy it

I'm writing this on 04/13/24. None of the problems you described happened to me, but since I bought my Ally one month ago, maybe they improved it. Mine wasn't open box, it was perfect in every way. It's a beautiful piece of hardware. I've been hammering this thing for a whole month and my SD card hasn't fried. It isn't a top tier SD card, it's a cheap 512GB bought from china and it delivers. So, I can't really understand why people are complaining about the SD card reader. The device doesn't even produce much heat, contrary to the Steam Deck. it has wonderful heat dissipation. I can't even feel it, even with 30W TDP. The only thing I complain about is the software. Armoury Crate is garbage and full of bugs. They should fire the guy responsible for the software on Asus, because the ROG Ally has all sorts of bugs, mainly the Armoury Crate. Sometimes, updates don't work. When they work, things still don't work. Every now and then, the Command Center buttons stop working and you have no alternative but to restart the device. When recharging, the joystick's RGB starts flashing... why? And if you have them turned off, after you disconnect the charger, the RGB will be at 100% and you have to turn them off manually on the Command Center, even though you already had them turned off... Another thing is the battery. I can hardly go beyond 2h, but hey, that's the price you pay for performance. The power bank I bought was a game changer, literally 🤣 All in all, I'm utterly satisfied with the ROG Ally, I just wish those software bugs were solved once and for all. Don't Asus executives watch RU-vid? A stripped down Windows 11 would help. Why on Earth does the Ally come with Office 365???

Got my ROG Ally two weeks ago and I’ve already re-played Ace Combat Zero, Skyrim, and now I’m onto Black Ops 2 Zombies (PS3 version). Only reason I’m emulating BO2 is because COD games are online only except for their campaigns on the PC ports.

It seems that some critiques of the portal comes from people that think it’s something it’s not and was never advertised to be. I have yet to see it reviewed for what was advertised. A controller with a screen for streaming. Every time someone repeats those talking points I’m like, geez we get it you want them to make a handheld.
@GarrettCrespo
@GarrettCrespo 4 месяца назад
I get that it’s a streaming tablet. My main complaint is that it isn’t what people are asking for. Sorry I didn’t make that exactly clear. I get what it is, but I don’t get why it exists.

The sd card reader will never get fixed because its a placement issue. It really baffles me how a hardware company can place a sd card reader next to the heat out put😅 I mean even a six year old understands that isnt a smart idea. I never use it.. (im not saying im ok with it!) but i tend to just put 2 or 3 games on it since im from the 90s era, and to many games on one device gives me to much options 😅 and instead of playing i end up scrolling trough my library.

Yeah, my SD card is starting to go. It’s just a matter of time, there is no fix until they redesign it. Running this thing in turbo mode isn’t good for it either. Damn it gets hot. My screen is going to melt.

Ive tried playstation remote play. Its absolute trash, fuzzy image with any sort of movement and absolutely dreadful input lag, and this is on a super fast 8gb up/8gb down (yes 8gb) using a 500 pound router which my playstation is connect to via ethernet cable. Its trash.

I’ve used both and it’s definitely more than a few frames, but I totally get the appeal of the OLED. I’m thinking I might calibrate this screen manually to see what I can get out of it.
@BajanHawk
@BajanHawk 7 месяцев назад
I have both and the ROG Ally destroys the Steam Deck with frames. Proper optimization can do this. Set the correct TDP, in game settings and you're good. Also, if you really need the Steam OS layout, you can use Big picture mode and Steam look just like Steam OS. But Asus's software updates has been great.
@GarrettCrespo
@GarrettCrespo 7 месяцев назад
I definitely prefer the build quality/feel of the steamdeck though. Like I mentioned, ASUS quality has been kind of subpar for years, but I also like being able to use the Ally as a PC if I want

I think it’s still sound. Cause what good is the PS5’s quality through the Portal when there’s no WiFi? And it isn’t just performance. Portability, convenience, game selection, and battery life are also factors.

Battery powered gaming devices need to be balanced More power = less battery Less power = more battery Higher resolutions, higher refresh rates, impractical RGB lighting, higher W w/ subpar power efficiency, etc leading to higher temperatures and prices are MASSIVE red flags for any battery powered device. That'll drain the battery so fast, that it'll probably wear it down quicker over time I think the Steam Deck/OLED is the perfect balance. The ROG Ally and Legion GO just sell me on the Steam Deck. I'm not looking to play AAA games anyways
@GarrettCrespo
@GarrettCrespo 6 месяцев назад
I mean, both the Steamdeck and ROG Ally require you to adapt the settings of the game to accommodate the chip performance on both. I've actually set several games up to be playable on the 15 watt power option instead of the 25 watt option so that I can get better battery. I've even set games to run at a resolution and refresh rate closer to the Steamdeck. The reason why I prefer the ROG Ally personally is because I have the option to crank the performance if I want to play more demanding games or dial it way back if I want to save on battery. Also, I've played with the RGB accents on and off and it makes no measurable difference. However, I will agree that the OLED screen and chipset going from 7nm to 6nm on the Steamdeck are great power saving changes. As for the lifespan of the battery in the long run, I can't speak to that yet, but the good thing, in my opinion, is that the battery on both the Ally and the Steamdeck are fairly easy to get to and change out if the need ever arrises.
@cqllel5186
@cqllel5186 6 месяцев назад
@@GarrettCrespo The main problem with ROG Ally and Legion GO, are the screen resolutions. (And it's OS) Especially if you're gonna play more graphically demanding games, you're gonna be dropping that res down to 720p anyways. The games will just look worse than on the Steam Deck. You'll never make full use out of that 1080p+ display outside of old/basic 3D games and 2D games and still manage to hit the maximum refresh rate. I think higher res is just pure greed, extreme standards It's cool to want more power for your AAA games when you can't be at the desk or if you got nothing else to play, but there'll be huge sacrifices on pre-2024 $600 mobile tech Plus, games perform better at 15W on the Deck than the others. I've seen that test a few times I'm mainly into the Steam Deck for the OS, ergonomics/layout, price, and battery. I'll keep my AAA games on my PC. A handheld device is just exactly where I wanna play all my indie games, JRPGs, visual novels, platformers, older titles, etc. And with a cozy screen size and great battery life, it's exactly what I want/need :p
@GarrettCrespo

I see what you’re saying. I will add this to what I said before. Having the ability to use this as a regular old windows PC is a nice plus and the resolution scaling and image reconstruction on the APU and built into games nowadays does help with the resolution issue you mentioned. Though, I am looking to get a steam deck for testing at some point as well. I can only speak from my experience on the Ally at the moment and it’s been pretty impressive considering I mainly play halo MCC/Infinite, allegedly some emulations, and some Xbox 360/PS3 era games. But at the end of the day it comes down to what you’re happy and comfortable with.

@@GarrettCrespo I've never liked Windows. It's more convenient when working and doing things, but definitely not when gaming. Especially horrible for gaming when it's Windows 11 Windows is 90% bloatware, 10% spyware/malware. Windows 11 is notorious for how bloated and unoptimized it is. Until there's a Windows 11 LTSC, I'd recommend Win10 LTSC. It's a very lite and minimal Windows. No MS Store, no xbox, nothing. It's a WinOS built for privacy/security and performance, so it comes without those. And getting the MS Store back onto LTSC is very difficult, I hear Linux will always run better. It's the best OS for gaming, just doesn't get as supported as a more mainstream spyware bloated OS like Windows. That's why SteamOS is great. Proton is a game changer. If Valve made an official PC SteamOS, I'd abandon Windows completely. I plan on keeping my Steam Deck exclusively for games, as well. Maybe for movies and anime, too Also, the lower the screen res, the better the performance and battery. Even if you could play a 2D pixel game at full res and refresh rate (1080p120), it'd still be better to have it at 720p as you'll get longer battery life and it won't require as many Watts. Especially when battery tech just isn't all that great. And if it is, it's expensive AF. Again, higher res is just pure greed with modern tech limitations. Same for RGB on top of all that

I’m so glad I got rid of this pile of hot garbage for the SD OLED. I bought the Ally expecting awesome performance and compatibility that I didn’t get with the LCD deck. I ended up with a clunky windows device with a fried SD card reader, that lasted maybe 45 minutes before battery saver kicks on and still had to turn my games on medium low setting to be at reasonable frames in any new game I played (bg3, re4, cyberpunk). I only enjoyed my time with this device while plugged in but I’m honestly over the windows experience on a handheld. It really requires a mouse and keyboard setup to be fully enjoyable.
