Recorded with my cell phone so I apologize about the shakiness of the video. The ship is docked in Erie, Pa for the winter getting repairs and upgrades done. One of my jobs is automation testing where we go in and test and repair sensors ranging from the general alarm to the engine oil pressure.
Most people have never seen the inner working of a large ship. This short tour will show you things from the drive train to the control center. Let me know if you would like to see anything else and I will try to make another video.

That is amazing the engine room and electronics on a ship and then you look at what it took to run a ship in 1920s and all the people to shovel coal and everything else wow very good video

Patrick Butas when they were powered by burning coal they did not shovel it they had either a conveyor or auger system

My grandfather headed the conneaut dock company .... was very proud of his work ... would take us kids to get ice cream and watch the ore boats . Awesome vid man

Thanks for the tour! I only recently learned about lake freighters; the design is fascinating because it takes into account large lakes, big distances, but no seagoing conditions. Quite unique.

waves can reach 35 feet on the great lakes. sounds a bit like seagoing conditions to this land lubber.

No seagoing conditions? Are u nuts. Storms have sunk 900 ft freighters here. The bottoms of these lakes have hundreds of lake ships on the bottom

Thanks for posting this fascinating video. It's especially interesting for those of us, who may never have the chance to tour one of these large ships. But are interested in the technology and mechanics.

These ships are truly amazing. They are pretty much like a floating city. We are just about ready to start working on them again starting with the Presque Isle so I should have some more video's in about a month. :)

Excellent job. I watch this ship going by on the Detroit river regularly from cobo hall and wonder what goes on behind the scenes to keep it going.

Sadly today, the Roger Blough was towed out of Sturgeon Bay, to be staged at Conneaut Ohio, and most likely in the spring , hauled to Port Colburn for scrapping

Any idea why she is being scrapped? I worked on this ship doing many modifications and updates. It's been a few years since I last seen her.

@@mrfixitpa She suffered an engine room fire(again) while in winter layup at Bay Ship, Got the unloading belts also, est damage is $100 million.

A question that often comes across my mind: Is there anything on board clearly indicating ownership of CN? Does CN have paperwork on there with their logo on it? How much input does CN itself have in your operations?

To my knowledge it did have fire suppression. I remember seeing it throughout the ship. Maybe it was not adequate enough? I worked on so many of these ships so it's hard for me to remember which ship was which. If memory serves me correctly there was also a major fire on this ship in its early years that took a few lives. It seems to me this ship had issues with fire suppression.

@@mrfixitpa I feel a connection to this ship because as a small kid, I watched them put out the first fire in 1971 in Lorain, Ohio. Yes, 4 guys died then. I live in Kentucky now but still have family up there, hope to see the ship at Conneaut before it is scrapped if that happens.😞😞

RJ 1999 we do go up there if there are ships up there on layup. im not sure of this years schedule but we mainly work on the Key Lakes Fleet.

RJ 1999 Yes the same one. I personally do not work with them. i work for a small ship electrical company that does electrical repairs, installs and my part... ship automation.

An absolutely a filthy engine room, yes they are laid up, but it doesn't take Chief Engineer to see though the mess and filth. That engineering crew should be ashamed of themselves. Time for a new Chief.
