I couldn't agree more, FWIW. Gregg Toland's camera work is dazzling and endlessly inventive. Every scene, every still is a masterpiece, perfectly composed.
Ebert is doing what he did best--sharing his synopsis and diagnosis for what's widely considered to be the greatest thing anyone ever put on film. And all anyone her is doing is quite simply, spitting venom and pissing acid on the grave of this esteemed film critic who is now long dead. What is wrong with all of you? He's discussing on the most vital contributions to cinema there is... and all you haters and never-wills out there are just bitterly talking about how Ebert never himself had a career penning scripts with the same success of David Mamet or Quentin Tarantino. A little respect for Welles... and maybe for Ebert, too... and cinema. Jesus...
giving your opinion is just that...it is not compelled by anyone else no matter how great they are. It's a good movie..but it's not great...the acting is not great, the story is not top notch either...but since all the great critics agree, then I guess i have to agree? Sorry...I don't. And it brings no disrespect to Ebert or Welles. Both greats, no doubt about it.
@@lgmnowkondo938 The acting is amazing, the cinematography, script and directing are great too. I can understand some poeple might be disapointed, after all this movie is a legend or myth if you want, almost 80 years being called the best movie, what could leave up to that?
@@lgmnowkondo938 Saying that the acting is not great is objectively incorrect. Welles manages to convincingly pull of a man slowly aging before our eyes while still having an unbridled amount of charisma. He's a character we don't fully understand because the story doesn't want us to understand him. Saying it isn't great is literally contradicted by nearly every single greatest of all time list. Say whatever you want about your personal feelings on the film, but it certainly is great.
William Ogle Wrong, stupid. Ebert wrote trash like "Vixens Up" and co wrote "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls". He never told me what to watch, he couldn't even pick his clothes
In honor of Roger, these were some of his most favourite films. The General Modern Times Citizen Kane Casablanca Notorious The Treasure Of The Sierra Madre The Third Man Singin In The Rain Floating Weeds La Dolce Vita Bonnie And Clyde 2001 A Space Odyssey Aguirre, Wrath Of God The Godfather I & II An Unmarried Woman Apocalypse Now Raging Bull 28 Up E.T. The Right Stuff Goodfellas Hoop Dreams Three Colors: Red Pulp Fiction Synecdoch, New York
If it wasn't for Roger widescreen on home video would never have existed. And if widescreen never caught one, I have to wonder how much longer it would have taken for HDTV to exist.
This really, really makes me want to kick myself. Get this: I was living in Boulder, Colorado one summer when Ebert did a frame-by-frame (literally) analysis of "Citizen Kane" at the Univ of Colorado Mackey Auditorium. And I didn't go to see it . . .
"As we begin to go back into this man's life we recon struck his lif out o eesh lo ly boy frs trk dbp mna aa e a ba s st st wo fs s o ts t at the age of 25 inhereted a newspaper and decided that he'd like to be a newspaper publisher." - Roger Ebert
Top 10: 1. Citizen Kane (1941) 2. The Dark Knight (2008) 3. Raiders Of The Lost Ark (1981) 4. The Godfather (1972) 5. Schindler's List (1993) 6. The Birth Of A Nation (1915) 7. Pulp Fiction (1994) 8. Do The Right Thing (1989) 9. King Kong (1933) 10. Fantasia (1940)
I really like this movie, I probably wouldn’t call it the best movie ever, not with films like Vertigo, King Kong or Batman The Movie (1966), but certainly it is a great movie and it does deserve its status as one of the greatest films ever
Noooo u r wrong Avengers endgame, infinity war and few other commercial, repeated and soulless superhero movies(excluding the dark knight trilogy and watchmen bcoz they didnt have action which i require the most bcoz i neither have the patience nor the brain to understand great stories) are the greatest movies of all time.
It's his favorite movie because it's the most popular???? Isn't he suppose to be the best critic why does he care what other people think, your favorite movie shouldn't have anything to do if it's popular or not.
@@errwhattheflip visit Hearst Castle, this movie should have been about J.Paul Getty, I was very disappointed with citizen Kane good movie about the wrong person...Getty was a selfish self serving asshole he was lucky to have Christopher Plummer play him made him look good.....Orson welles was a liberal creep who was much like Getty
I just watched this movie and I would have to say that it was ok...perhaps even good. But, it just might not stand the test of time...everyone who is anyone says it's the best movie ever made...that's just classic Hollywood group think. We all agree that this is the best, so we know you will also agree.....well, I don't agree.
lgmnow kondo What do you mean it doesn’t stand the test of time? If you keep in mind that this movie CREATED ALMOST ALL MOVIE CLICHÉS, you would have a different mindset going to see it
