Loved this story. Very moving. I hope no one minds if I share something a little similar. My dad was a medic in WWII fighting in Germany and Italy. After a battle, he went in to attend to the wounded, and came across a German soldier who had his leg blown off but was still alive and conscious. My dad was able to stem his bleeding and stabilize him. My dad was able to do everything else that he needed to do and then went back to check on the German. They began to talk --the fellow spoke English well. The man said that he dreamed of the war ending and taking his family to Florida and buying an orange grove. Just so happens that my dad had an orange in his nap sack and gave it to the man as the man was carried away as a prisoner. Before that happened he shared his name with the man. Years later my a crate of oranges was delivered by my house where i grew up. Somehow, this man survived, did move to Florida, did buy a grove and became an orange farmer. Every year thereafter we received a wonderful box of oranges with a note that said “Jerry (my Dad’s name) thank you for the orange”. They keep in touch, and on my wedding day, my dad asked me to help him find a phone (this preceded cell phones) because he heard this man’s voice in his head asking for my dad. My dad did find a phone, called this man and the man’s wife answered. She said that the man had died that morning, knew he was dying, and asked the wife to let my father know how grateful he was. Take from this what you will --i don’t know what it make of it, but if there is a lesson, perhaps it is that fundamentally we are all connected and our natural state is not to be enemies but to be friends. Dad, i miss you a lot every day.

@athelwulfgalland
@athelwulfgalland 2 года назад
Also born in 78 & I agree. It was still like an open wound for so many people. Many of my father's classmates wound up over there. His class president literally did the whole jump on the grenade thing. His best friend came back a changed man, having served as a door gunner on a Huey, with Air Cav. Another of his classmates he used to surf with came back totally out of his mind. He remembered also seeing train loads of tanks, trucks & other military equipment going towards the ports throughout Cali. Then he'd see the wreckage of the same type of equipment, mangled almost beyond recognition, going back East. It took until the 90s before people finally started to open their hearts to our veterans from that war. At the end of the 90s I started meeting Vietnam vets online & became good friends with several through our mutual interest in model building. I've heard plenty of stories from them because it was still just as vivid to them then as it was back in the 60s & early 70s. My grandfather, on my mother's side, served three tours with the Air Force as airbase security. His backpack frame saved his life & he brought it home as a war memento with a VC bullet still lodged in it. While his backpack frame miraculously saved his life it couldn't save him from the repeated exposures to Agent Orange which they used to keep the jungle from overtaking the airbases' perimeters. His marriage with my grandmother fell apart after his time in country. He drank pretty heavily, she learned he had a local steady & rumor has it I have a couple of Aunts or Uncles over there. Anyway he struggled with several bouts of cancer through the 70s before it finally took his life in 82. Sadly I have no conscious recollection of him because I only met him a few times. Incidentally while going through photos from when he was stationed in Japan between tours he was showing off his hobby; He too was a model builder.

@athelwulfgalland 2 года назад
@@dave23024 I know what you mean all too well. My children were born in 97 & 03. My eldest couldn't even tell you where Vietnam or Korea were on the map; Let alone tell you anything about their history. She might recognize Korea as the origin of K-Pop but that's about it. My son on the other hand has been a student of history since the age of awareness, much like his father before him & is far better versed in history than most any of his peers. He still has a naive side though in which he misses huge pieces of the puzzle if I don't take the time to explain it all out for him. But hey, at least he's willing to listen & learn. I genuinely wasn't aware, until recent years, that others had begun to forget all about Korea. It was the first time the UN flexed it's muscles, it was the first major proxy war of the Cold War era that cost us so many of our WW2 vets & young men of the early 50s. Never mind the immense death toll of the peninsula's inhabitants or the human wave tactics of the North's Chinese backers whom also paid a heavy price in blood. It marked several changes in military strategy & a change in eras concerning military technology as well. The same could be said of Vietnam too though. If MacArthur had had his way nuclear weapons would've been used to counter the Chinese on a tactical level. Never mind the outcome in terms of lives lost as a result or our own soldiers becoming irradiated it would've created a precedent that inevitably would lead to a doomsday scenario.

I am from New Zealand. I have walked for 32 days across Vietnam from Ha Long Bay to Sapa. Early on in my walk a man holding the hand of his grandchild saw me and approached excitedly. He acted out shooting into the maize fields and then showed me bullet scars in his arms. He took me by the hand and we walked down to a roadside cafe where we had tea. Tears were rolling down his face. I expect I was the first westerner he had seen ( at least up close) and that me being there brought the reality of peace home

I graduated high school in 1969. The draft was such a fear because I was planning to marry my first love. I did get married shortly after graduating. Then I asked my husband if he would consider joining the Air Force instead of waiting to be drafted. I had heard the Air Force enlisted men who had skills in electronics etc. which my husband did. So he agreed and sure enough he never got sent to Vietnam. We did spend 2 yrs in the Philippines at Clark Air Force Base. We were there when the POWs were released and made a stop at the base for rest. Such a moving day. Now I’m 73yrs old and my first great grandchild’s mother is part Vietnamese and part Cambodian. What are the odds. I love her to the moon and back. She is a blessing! God Bless you sir, I too am a Born Again Christian!!🙏🇺🇸

Beautiful testimony, really speaking of the situation. This ex-soldier has a good state of mind like the most part of people in the USA, but a small level of awareness as he considers they are all communists, but they are more likely Vietnamese. It is mainly the point unfortunately, most part of the Americans see the rest of the world as simply not American, as in all the rest of the world we were all the same.
@5222k
@5222k 3 года назад

@@5222k Maybe you confuse state of mind (he has a good state of mind because we can see he has no rancour) and level of awareness (I can tell he has a small one according the fact he still consider these guys not like Vietnamese, but just communists). But all communits are not the same like just communists if they were only one category, all Vietnamese are not communist neither... does the Vietnamese consider him as a capitalist like anyone else who does not seem to be communist (it would be like if for a Vietname, Americans are similar to Canadians English Italians French Germans, the same like one category, every capitalist countries) ? That is a low level of awareness. There are also other words with shades : mentalities and life philosophy for example, and as they have different name they are different. The most part of things are not Manichean, we are not all either good or either bad, if we are not capitalist we are communist (if ther were only these kind of system possibles ^^). However the point is when you get close to somebody level of awareness, you think the same like it is the truth, the only one truth. But if you evolve you will get a further vision a better understanding of things because you could be more likely to incorporate more parameters to understand a whole question/problem/system...

The man had no legitimate right or reason to be in Vietnam in the first place. The war...win or lose... had absolutely no effect on American security, safety, freedom and way of life. Many of the South Vietnamese were either ambivalent or against US involvement there....and all those veterans knew that. It was a really, really bad "trip" for those guys....so why all the videos and going back to Vietnam?
@rfj1156
@rfj1156 3 года назад
Well what you fail to understand is that the US were invited into Vietnam by the South Vietnamese government. This was due to the US being Capitalist and also one of the richest militaries in the world at the time. The South Vietnamese government was also capitalist while the North Vietnamese government were communist. South Vietnam did not want Vietnam to be communist since many of these governments had ruined the lives of even more people than Capitalism.
@topgeardel
@topgeardel 3 года назад
@@rfj1156 Lol. Why are you giving me a history lesson....I lived those days. The US was "invited" by the S. Vietnamese regime. So ?????? You connect the dots way, way too easily. You don't get to go from Point A to Point Z and skip everything in between. If you felt the US had an obligation...then a generous support of weaponry would have been the ONLY legitimate response. That "invitation" cost about $1 Trillion, 60000 American deaths and a big black eye for the nation for years afterward. What happened afterward? Cambodia went from partially lost...to totally lost and Laos probably went from being neutral to communistic. That's it.
@rfj1156
@rfj1156 3 года назад
@@topgeardel I never said that the American's plan worked. I just explained why they went there. To contradict your point about America sending weapons over. That would make absolute sense but there is one flaw to that statement. The South did not ask for weapons, they asked for the Americans to help.
@goutvols103

thank you for your comment. The US was obligated to assist the South Vietnamese because of the SEATO (Southeast Asia Treaty Organization). Of course, if you do not believe me than you are a communist.
@topgeardel
@topgeardel 3 года назад
@@goutvols103 Lol. You are correct about SEATO, I forgot about that alliance. But of course you know that "obligation" can be brought to question and validity. We obviously part ways on the interpretation and application of the term "obligation". I would also add that the other members of SEATO should have been adequate major players (instead of the US) in that "obligation". For most of them, it was THEIR region. They were the ones to have real skin in the game. The US could have been the supplier of weaponry. Americans need to be extremely vigilant when the political and military heads start signing "obligations" that others pay for. SEATO included Great Britain and France as well as Australia, Pakistan, Thailand and New Zealand. Somehow that "obligation" ended being an American tragedy alone. Why was that?

Most of the vets are dead by now. I was a young man then; now I am 76 years old. When my wife and I go to parties, weddings, and tours, I am usually the oldest person attending. On a crowded bus, women will try and give me their seat. In the US, veterans will wear ball caps to identify themselves to other vets. A veteran can be any age, any race, or any gender. Without the ball caps, we look like the general public. I see nothing like that in Vietnam. I have met former enemies in the US but never in Vietnam. I say former because now I have no enemies.
