20 years ago on this day in 2004 - Roger Federer became No.1 for the first time in his career. From that day he held top spot for a record 237 consecutive weeks and had 310 weeks overall at No.1 (2nd to Djokovic's incredible 410 weeks and counting).

There simply is no equalling the gift for tennis Roger Federer had. You watch his shoes dance across the court, you watch his racket wash through the ball, you watch his shots leave opponents in shock, and sometimes you have to admit it’s impossible, but he still did it anyway.

Federer and Djokovic are like comparing a Ferrari to a Toyota Corolla -- they're both very different cars, but are both GOATs in their own ways. Federer the Ferrari easily beats the Corolla when it comes to peak performance, elegance, and aesthetics. Very few people are able to drive one or compete with it in high-speed encounters. The Ferrari oozes class, and for this reason many poor uneducated people resent it. Meanwhile, Djokovic the Corolla is built for the everyday family man. It has no thrills and looks very average. Where it shines is how long it lasts -- it won't beat any car in a drag race, but it will keep going and going without breaking down. It's reliable. So what would you rather drive - Federer the Ferrari or Djokovic the Corolla?

I don't disagree with the car analogy for the players. but in real life, it's actually the poor, uneducated and/or new money who look up to the flashy cars (even if they can't afford it), while the more educated and/or old money tend to go for something low key but reliable.

Federer was so unlucky to be 6 years older than Đoković and Nadal, he practically missed the entire weak era (16-23). He would have padded much more titles than at his prime. If only another Nadal/Đoković came right after them, like Federer had to endure, Novak wouldn't be near 20 slams.

The only "weak" generation at that time was the previous one, with Kuerten, Kafelnikov and Corretja as their standouts (which were world class). Federer has more talent in his small toe than Djokovic had in his entire body! Credit to Djokovic that he has worked hard on his fitness and strength (both mental and physical), but this puts him in the same category as Agassi in my opinion - who had to work very hard on his fitness and strength to be No.1. Without those elements, his game would not have stood up. Djokovic is just a better version of David Ferrer or David Nalbandian. who were just mobile brick walls.
