The Swiss Maestro plays in his 13th US Open quarterfinal as the Bulgarian continues his best-ever run in the tournament. Previously, the pair have met on seven occasions with Federer coming out on top every time. However, Dimitrov enters the match in fine form having dropped just one set in the tournament so far.
Is a significant upset on the cards?

Federer, and the US open, its where he plays the worst for some time now.. the way he won it in 08 was phenomenal after such a poor year by his high standards!.. but after 09 which he could have won, everything went downhill, having matchpoints to be in the final of 010 and 011 against Djokovic, then playing great in 012 but losing to Berdych, than 013 which was I think by far his worst season! Losing to Robredo, then came the new racket and hyper aggressive play style from Edberg, but lost badly to Marin, 015 was ok making the final! But his strategy in my opinion was off to play so aggressive and hardly playing from the baseline..plus Djokovic played great! 017 was very poor considering the phenomenal year he had! 018 plus 019 same thing! Really struggling and losing to players where he never should have lost too! Unfortunate US open used be one of his best Slams, preformence wise...not taking anything away from his opponents!...I hope he can shine one more time there, but I kind of doubt it.. especially with Djokovic and Nadal etc..

I'm a die-hard Novak fan, but you just hit the nail right on the head. Federer lost many finals where he's by far the better player and should have won convincingly: the 2008 Wimbledon vs Nadal, The 2009 Aussie Open vs Nadal, the 2009 US Open vs Del Potro, the 2019 Wimbledon vs Djokovic These are games he had in his pocket but strangely lost. He would have ended with at least 26 Slams which would have taken up to a century for any player to equal. Successful career with many unbelievable near misses I must say
@Fraudkovic
@Fraudkovic Год назад
@@uzorlawrence721 2008 Wimbledon 2009 ao? Bro what? Nadal was destroying for majority of the match and federer needed two tiebreaks to push it into the 5th which only happened because nadal was inexperienced. He was definitely not a superior player .
@jton6852
@jton6852 Год назад
@@Fraudkovic Yeah, totally laughable comment. To say Federer "should have won convincingly" Wim 08 and AO 09 is just someone telling themselves what they want to believe. Both matches were close all-time classics, so no one should have won convincingly. And particularly Wimbledon, when Nadal was up two sets to love after getting closer and closer three years running- what a dumb assessment.
@gauravmalltarlok5354
@gauravmalltarlok5354 Год назад
@@Fraudkovic 2009 AO Nadal was not even close to being a superior player. Nadal had to persevere in that 3rd set tiebreak, otherwise, Federer would have won in 4. Not to mention that Roger was literally 4-2 in the first set which he then lost. 2008 Wimby though was a Federer with a mental block, using his experience as a 5-year Wimbledon champion, to push it to 5th. It's crazy how close Federer came to winning the 2008 Wimbledon after being so close to losing it in the first 4 sets. Not taking anything away from Nadal, but those matches were really close and I think think it's fair to say that Nadal was a bit lucky. Just like Federer was a bit lucky in 2017 AO. When two players both play at such a high level, luck becomes a bigger factor in deciding the result.

Roger clearly had an injury. His serve speed dropped to 100 mph something as the match wore on. And Grigor was grinding out the rallies. They both played so fast! Roger must have finally realized what it was like to play himself.

Yes, Roger’s level fell way down. But what injury? Nothing evident, though falling service speed with no limp points to one thing, back. Has there ever been a back story? Players are very quiet about injuries, that not detract from opponent victory. Still, I sure to want to know what happened.

28:34 :P that moment alone is proof that "Federer is human." We have all had that wobble of imbalance while beginning our serve. ... I wonder how often that happens for Federer?? I presume it is not often. I wonder how it impacts his first serve (or any serve, but especially the first). On this occasion, it *may* have effected it - he normally gets that wide serve to the sideline.
@bryanmartin5901

@johnjeffers1524
@johnjeffers1524 2 года назад
there was one iconic moment of this match where he missed a backhand badly, and laughed and waved it off - and then the camera moved to Seerin Luthi standing up and barking at him. If that is what you are referring to, then I must say you are wrong; that is not a sign that he didn't care anymore. Not whatsoever. (It *is* a sign of nerves, however; and too-low confidence in his backhand; and jadedness *at* his career-long issue with that shot). ... I highly doubt he "did not care anymore," but perhaps you are right; of course it is possible. That was his sentiment in his 2018 loss, but that was due to the oppressive conditions. If you are right, though, and he did not care - then that is interesting, and I would have to say it is unique to the US Open. Maybe he got burnt out, by the QF, from the energy of the tournament and city.

@@Truthasvictim I read some comments some day, that Roger plays ALWAYS under the pressure. I know that Rafa and Djokovic have 20 GS titles too, bo Roger is just Roger. Federer is the Father of Tennis. Unfortunately, he is the kind that eats his children. (A la, that Spanish (I believe) Classical painter's famous painting of "Saturn"). I realize one of his "children" beat him here - but is that "child" going to go on to maintain tennis at the state that it is in now days? ... No. No one would say "Dimitrov is the next Federer" or, Dimitrov is going to ably carry the baton, handed to him by Federer. (That being said, I think Tsitsipas, Zverev, Medvedev, and maybe Janik Sinner (if he changes his name to Siner!!) might be able to at least grab hold of that baton, even if they only stumble a few meters with it.
