Roger Fisher - Reubke Sonata on the 94th Psalm [1970] Chester Cathedral 

The finest performance to this day. May he rest in peace.

This performance is nothing less than a force of Nature. It's as if one is hearing this famous work for the very first time. Astonishing.

Roger Fisher was my organ teacher for 3 years whilst I lived in Chester. He was a very active person in the city and I was rather overwhelmed by his technique. He was also a fine solo pianist and gave many lunchtime concerts in the city. He taught me to have confidence in myself and I shall not forget his lessons.

One of my favourite organ works also, not heard enough now, absolute brilliant performance in every detail .

My favourite organ work, and when I came to learn it, THIS was the performance which most inspired me and still does to-day. Amusingly, Roger gave a stupendous performance of this work for the IAO Congress in Chester in the 1970s, and never have I seen so many organists almost crawl out of a cathedral on their knees. It was simply sensational, and this wonderful recording conveys some of the magic of that live performance.

This is simply the finest performance of this work.This recording is legend. It goes back to that generation of Organists who were masters, just listen to the Passion and Precision within this performance played on one of the finest instruments in this country by a young man who was and still is nothing short of Brillliant!!!!

What a stunning performance as to be expected from Roger. The articulation and colour surpass other recordings. At this time he had just overseen the organ rebuild and got the voicing of the whole organ to perfection. He had always wanted me to learn this, perhaps his favourite piece, but despite his best endeavours in my lessons, I still have the music on my shelf unplayed!

There's an astounding number of performances of this enigmatic organ work of Julius Reubke on RU-vid, and this is certainly one of the better performances!

I've just heard this played in a local church in Chicago, one modeled after a cathedral in France so it has the architecture, atmosphere and acoustics to accommodate the work. I still haven't recovered from the experience.

quite a legend, I was first played this in the early 80's, got a copy years later, and nearly sang in the choir...Roger was a character!

I remember page turning for Roger Fisher when he was rehearsing for a recital back in 1971 or 1972 - the Reubke was one of the works that he played and not only was it a wonderful performance but I also got treated to a running commentary on the work and the registration while he was playing ...

This record was also very well recorded. I use to play this record back in the 70s through massive omnidirectional speakers made by Radford of England. It sounded magnificent and I've never been able tho duplicate the sense of depth and of being there with this recording ever since.

Amazingggg! Performance and recording

Too many recordings of this masterpiece are insufficiently articulated to allow the hearer to follow what's going on - or quite simply too fast. Roger Fisher's masterful registration (or rather orchestration) combined with his (mostly) perfect tempi and fingerwork make this the best recording I've heard.

Catharine Crozier made a most magnificent recording of this at Grace Cathedral in Sanfrancisco. It is on RU-vid check it out.

The best performance on youtube. I've just discovered it. But it was hard to find, maybe because the title does not mention the 94th psalm... :/ (my research was "reubke 94" and this performance did not appear).

Brilliant performance, playing on a fantastic organ.

Truly he is a master. I'm extremely attached to the recording in America by Dame Gillian Weir. I dearly hope that this amazing, smorgasbord instrument is still as it was for this recording. What a wonderful pallette of color and texture! The organ that Weir plays in The Mother Church in Boston is my favorite Aeolian Skinner for much the same reason. The best American romantic instrument I think. Less than cathedral accoustics though the organ sounds wonderful anyway.

In the sixties, when I was in high school, I had an LP with Virgil Fox playing this on one side and Cesar Franck's Grande Piece Symphonique on the other side. Would love to hear both of those performances again, but doesn't seem to be on RU-vid.

at minute 15 do I hear road noise or a siphon? Doesn't take anything away from this outstanding performance.

Nice, but I still prefer the recording that E. Power Biggs made in 1953 on the organ of the Methuen Memorial Music Hall. This was prior to the onset of the crippling arthritis that plagued Mr. Biggs in his later years, and his technique was at its best! It has been said that Biggs was "not all made of starch," and Biggs's recording of this work proved the truth of that statement--his phrasing, his rhythm, his registration, all were at their very best in the early 50's! Copies of that legendary LP are still available on eBay from time to time, so get one and judge for yourself!
