At GearFest '15, synthesizer pioneer Roger Linn sat down with Mitch Gallagher to talk music and electronic instruments. Technical Grammy award-winner Roger Linn invented the LM-1 Drum Computer (the first sample-based drum machine) in 1979. He later designed the Akai MPC60, which combined a sampling drum machine with a real-time MIDI sequencer. His guitar effects unit, AdrenaLinn, has been used on hit recordings by John Mayer and Red Hot Chili Peppers. In 2014 he released the LinnStrument, an expressive MIDI performance controller.

The Akai MPC 60 is one the most ergonomically friendly sampling workstations, if you have enough room for one.

Great job interviewing as always Mitch! It was also nice to see Nick Shenckel being shown the Linnstrument. I seriously want one, my wife won't let me have anymore keyboards, and this is a game changer

Roger Linn's story was included twice in Mark Vail's book, Vintage Synthesizers (2000). I've read it numerous times, but it's definitely cool to hear him talk about it in real time. Funny enough, but what he says about guys like Brian Eno wanting to upload their own sounds when the LM-1 was being made would come to pass in the aftermath of Linn Electronics folding, when E-Mu came out with the SP-12. Of course, E-Mu wouldn't have created the SP-12 if Roger hadn't designed the LM-1 and Oberheim Electronics hadn't come out with the DMX (which does at least include interchangeable sample chips). There was only a short timespan between technological advancements. What he says here about the compelling instrumental voice being missing from mainstream pop music is increasingly true. This is from June 2015, and my comment is posted on the second day of 2018.

I remember Roger linn. He left a lot of people high and dry when he filled bankruptcy after a lot of us purchased his Linn 9000.

On the other hand, if more people had bought the Linn 9000, it might have been the Roger Linn MPC instead of the Akai MPC !

Essentially identical op but one is physically more like a keyboard and the other more like a fretboard.

roli is stuck in the past and your slides/bends only work in coarse quarter tones vs fluid, seamless pitch movement. look into the xenharmonic world, and realize that the 12 tone piano layout will soon become defunct and outdated.

does anyone else notice how listening to roger linn works as a sleep aid, similar to bob ross.

If you close your eyes and listen to him, especially certain words and phrases sound very much like actor Jeff Goldblum!
