@ Ron Stewart - Yeah! I share your admiration of JJ's guitar chops. This is about a year before he formed The Hellecasters with Will Ray and Jerry Donahue. I saw them live in L.A. three times, and had the opportunity to talk with JJ each time. He's an absolute gentleman, genuinely humble, very approachable, and a phenomenal musician. Kudos to you, sir, for calling attention to him. He deserves much more acclaim than he receives.
This album caught some attention and for awhile Roger seemed to be back big time, but it never really took off. Loved this song and the album was good also.
+Ron Stewart hes on top now regardless,he was the highest paid musician in the world a couple years ago.seems like forbes had him bringing in 60 million in 2012-2013
I think Roger just wanted to do things on his own terms and avoid the R’n R grind he had with the Byrds. Since then he’s gotten back into acoustic folk music and computer technology so he does a lot of music online. He still tours occasionally and He’s not lacking for $$$, he bought the rights to all the Byrds music years ago
HOLY SHIT! What a fantastic song! I can't stop listening to this! Why in the HELL wasn't this played on the radio and a number 1 hit?! The people were sleeping on this one. UNFORGIVABLE!
It was all over the place for a time! I remember seeing the video so much on vh1 and hearing it on the radio. I believe it went as high as #2 on the charts.
Oh wow. Two classics: Carson and McGuinn. Only thing missing is Tom Petty. But only one of them can (almost) pull off that mega-mullet! This is one of my favorite songs, thanks for posting such a great clip.
Holy Shit! IMO, this is the best-sounding band McGuinn had since The Byrds, not least due to the fact that John Jorgenson is playing lead guitar. JJ played on the _Back From Rio_ album, was in The Byrds' (with David Crosby and Chris Hillman) backup band at the Roy Orbison tribute concert, was center stage in The Hellecasters with Will Ray and Jerry Donahue, and was a co-founder of The Desert Rose band with former Byrd Chris Hillman and Herb Pedersen. This is a truly awesome performance! Thanks for posting!! 😎
I wonder if they considered adding Roger after Roy Orbison passed away. With the Dylan and Petty connection, I agree that he would have been a natural choice.
I actually got to see him the same year at the rosebud in Pittsburgh PA... A great moment I just wish I would have took time and got his autograph... I sat 20 ft away from.,
He did a tour last year with Chris Hillman celebrating the 50th anniversary of Sweetheart of the Rodeo and had Marty Stuart’s band backing them up, it was like hearing the Byrds in ‘69
@@Trainer_Red.....Grunge is something totally different. I love Cobain, but that statment totally sucks and he is right only if we look what adolescents liked better at those days. Kurt is a great tragical figure of rock, but he can't be compared with this or Tom Petty. Two totally different things.
Johnny Carson was a class act. He understood that making his guests look good was part of the success of his show. He actually listened to what they had to say, rather than lying in wait for opportunities to make snarky comments at their expense just to make himself look better. The universe of late night TV took a dive into hell when Johnny retired, leaving a repository of self-prepossessed twits and smart-ass wannabees who were never in the same league as Johnny. And it's worse now.
Bought the album when it came out. It has 5 or 6 great songs! They impact ed me like nothing else. In fact, IMO, it trumps any Byrds album. Not only that, but the recording, mixing, and mastering are superb! It was nice to see David Crosby and Chris Hillman (Bryd members) on the album. George Hawkins on bass (Kenny Loggins bass player) did a great job. And Stan Lynch, always makes the drums sound perfect for every song.
My first exposure to John Jorgenson live was a Desert Rose Band concert at Portland's Waterfront Park in the late '80s. His playing was a revelation that day. Made me wanna catch up with his musical career in a hurry. Seriously under-appreciated.
That's why Roger joked, "When did I record that?", when he heard American Girl. Tom thought he'd done something wrong, when he was told that Roger Mcguinn wanted to meet him.😁
Yes, but JJ was a busy guy. About a year after this performance, JJ formed The Hellecsters with Will Ray and Jerry Donahue. Desert Rose was still happening behind all of it, from 1987 to 1995.
There are video clips of Tom playing. I can see them here in Australia but you people (for some ludicrous reason!!) can not view the video in the USA!!! God knows why but that is what I have been told by some good TPATHB fans living the good old USof A
Have you played a 12-string Rickenbacker? Barre chords would be a bitch, and I'm not sure it would even sound that good. As you know, he always goes for that "jingle-jangle" sound that the 12S Rick provides, and I'm doubting you would get that strumming 12 strings at once. IMHO.
Graham Charnock , It was actually about Papa John Phillips and the daughter who became his drugs-buddy. John's autobiography refers to the "green Gucci bag".
...and while George Hawkins was working on looking cool swaying with his bass, he played the wrong note @ 0.41 and spent the next second searching the fretboard for it...major league amateurish on a simple song...and on national television...and now on youtube forever !
This was on 2-1-2009 and should read 21 or year 2021 or 11-9. The Monday He is talking about is most likely Monday September 6th 2021 Labor Day. The castle He mentioned is the one Trump was knighted in. She refers to mystery babylon LA is referring to The Angels los Angeles California and babylon is asleep to what's really coming. Back from the river and south america is shaped like a tornado whirlwind for a reason
Wow...that's an interesting observation. I'm not getting Dire Straits vibes off this at all, but I'll have to listen again to see if I can pick that up.
