Roger Nichols is a special guest on The Paul Leslie Hour.
On this episode we are in the presence of one of the world's great songwriters. Composer, musician & recording artist Roger Nichols gives a rare interview. He is one of the people I have most wanted to interview on The Paul Leslie Hour. Why? He has composed some of the most captivating music ever.
Here are some of the great songs co-written by Roger Nichols: "We've Only Just Begun," "I Won't Last a Day Without You," and "Rainy Days and Mondays" all recorded by the Carpenters. "Out in the Country" was recorded by Three Dog Night and R.E.M. All of these songs he co-wrote with Paul Williams. He also wrote "Times of Your Life," with Bill Lane, which was a hit for Paul Anka.
Nichols also records with his own group: Roger Nichols and the Small Circle of Friends." He's talented in so many ways. As a musician he's a mulit-instrumentalist who can play guitar, bass, piano, and violin.
It's a great pleasure to welcome an artist who composed songs sung by some of the greats of all time. Everyone from Barbra Streisand, Frank Sinatra Jr., Art Garfunkel and Barry Manilow, just to name a few. He's right here on The Paul Leslie Hour. What a thrill!
The Paul Leslie Hour is a talk show dedicated to “Helping People Tell Their Stories.” Some of the most iconic people of all time drop in to chat. Frequent topics include Arts, Entertainment and Culture.

Fair play to Roger for giving the Carpenters their due for launching his and Paul's career. I feel the Carpenters could have, and should have, used more of their songs - 'An Old Fashioned Love Song' being a case in point.

A great interview, thank you for chasing up Roger Nichols. Although "the greatest musician in history" is probably stretching it, without doubt his three finest songs - We've Only Just Begun, Rainy Days, and Won't Last a Day, are of artistic standards in the craft of song-writing that are very rarely surpassed or matched. I am curious about his musical background. His background in the violin suggests he had a classical education. Did he study formal harmony and counterpoint? And how does he write: does he improvise at the piano, or sit down with a paper, pencil, eraser and manuscript paper. Also is it an agonising process for him, or does he write quickly? You were running out of time in the interview, but he said the music industry "went crazy". I would like to know what he meant by this and when did this happene. Todd Hayes film "Superstar", while questionable in its accuracy as an historical account of the Carpenters, does give an interesting perspective on capitalism, music and mental health (with reference to anorexia). As Nichols was a composer of both songs and jingles for advertisers, it would be interesting to know his views. Does he think there is a an artistic compromise in being commercial? Karen Carpenter's reputation seems to have grown, and is now considered one of America's great vocalists. However, I must say I thought Streisand's version of Won't Last A Day was particularly good as the soaring high notes in the chorus seemed to be almost custom made for her type of voice.

Pen, paper, eraser and manuscript paper would only pertain to documentation, not the creation of anything. Great songwriter, Roger.
