❤My first memory of any song was of this song. Me and my Sister aged 3 and 4 years old grew up in an orphanage in London in the early 1970s and the ladies who worked there used to sing it to the kids when it was on the radio. R.I.P. Thank You

Kenyans are mourning the death of Kenyan-born British folk singer and expert whistler Roger Whittaker, who is especially famed locally for his 1982 hit song My Land is Kenya but my favourite is this song..

* The Last Farewell * There's a ship lies rigged and ready in the harb inor Tomorrow for old England she sails Far away from your land of endless sunshine To my land full of rainy skies and gales And I shall be aboard that ship tomorrow Though my heart is full of tears at this farewell For you are beautiful, I have loved you dearly More dearly than the spoken word can tell For you are beautiful, I have loved you dearly More dearly than the spoken word can tell I've heard there's a wicked war a-blazing And the taste of war I know so very well Even now I see the foreign flag a-raising Their guns on fire as we sail into hell I have no fear of death, it brings no sorrow But how bitter will be this last farewell For you are beautiful, I have loved you dearly More dearly than the spoken word can tell For you are beautiful, I have loved you dearly More dearly than the spoken word can tell Though death and darkness gather all about me My ship be torn apart upon the seas I shall smell again the fragrance of these islands And the heaving waves that brought me once to thee And should I return home safe again to England I shall watch the English mist roll through the dale For you are beautiful, I have loved you dearly More dearly than the spoken word can tell For you are beautiful, I have loved you dearly More dearly than the spoken word can tell

Words by amateur folk singer and poet Ron Webster, a silversmith from Solihull whose inspiration came when he was on his way home from work on a damp Midland bus in the rain, wishing he was somewhere warm. At the time, Roger Whittaker had a radio show, in which he invited listeners to send lyrics in, to which Roger would add music. Ron Webster sent it in, Roger liked it, set it to music, performed it, then recorded it, and thus a huge hit was born.

i remember these jerry lewis telethons it was very popular in the 50's 60's 70 and 80 and 90's until 2010.

One of Roger's greatest recordings. The problem with the MDA telethons is that they were too long, and performers such as Sandy Duncan and Frank Sinatra would do their numbers while the majority of viewers were fast asleep! It's no wonder that the telethons were eventually discontinued.
