I'm with you, I have no idea why there wasn't more hype for this game. For me, it was the biggest reveal at the Skulls event. A 40k CRPG made by Owlcat? That's at least worth being cautiously optimistic about...
Owlcat put out a tweet the other day about how Rogue Traders don’t always choose a direct descendant as their heir which gives me a lot of hope for character creation,(which in an ideal world would just be the DH2 system) and makes me hope we can get weird with our player character and don’t have to be pigeonholed into into a standard rogue trader role. I think it would be really neat to be a tech priest trader, an Ex-Guard Captain, or a ministorum priest. Or fuck all that and just let me play as a freeboota and give me a dedicated button to go “WAAAAGH!”
Yeah I wouldn't mind seeing alien races as an option tbh. It may be kinda heretical lore-wise but I've always associated Rogue Trader with the more goofy 80s 40k tone than the super serious faux-Latin nonsense of modern 40k, so I think it would be fine to play it a little bit fast and loose where it opens up gameplay options.
The Rock Paper Shotgun interview elaborated a little bit that you're a DISTANT relative, and that you have a lot of freedom with who you are, so we're looking good!
It is extremely unlikely they will allow the Rogue Trader character to be anything but a human of the Imperium, since the devs seem to have a lot of respect for the lore, and although the Rogue Trader title affords a lot of freedom, it doesn't afford so much that they can be a Xeno or anything like that. OTOH Rogue Traders DO have the freedom to work with or hire whoever they want, so having heretical companions should be in the cards.
One thing to ad to being a rouge trader. When it comes to authority in WH40K, quite literally the only one who's above a rogue trader is an inquisitor. To put that in perspective: Inquisitors are the single most powerful people in 40K when it comes to rank and authority. So you're just 1 rank bellow that. Meaning you can do quite literally whatever you want without consequences since your declaration of trade says "I can do whatever I want" While the original intention of this declaration was to give Rouge Traders autonomy when it came to exploring the galaxy unhindered, most really just use it to make money. As for the Dark Heresy/Rouge Trader homebrew comment, it's literally in the book that they're compatible with one another. You can if you want to import your Dark Heresy character into Rouge Trader and vice versa.
Yes and no, remember, inquisitors have only as much power as they can leverage. Sure they can order rogue trader something, but what if loyal rogue trader says theyre busy? naturally said inquisitor can amass forces from local navy and chase them across sector for months to years to decades, during which ordo hereticus will look at them and ask pertinent question "why are you wasting all these resources and time, if you had access to navy you never needed rogue trader and if you needed that rogue trader so badly you could have bribed them, so relinquish those forces". They could also file to high lords of terra to terminate this writ of trade making rogue trader a simple renegade, but that again will go onto desk of lord inquisitor of ordo hereticus who will come to same conclusion, decades centuries or millenia later. Not that life of rogue trader is rosy, in imperial space if they arrive with couple ships they might be mistaken for enemy and fired upon, if they want anything done they should have a bribe of their own ready, every single important person will try to involve them in their squabbles over any reason. In fact somebody who can just command a single warship of their own is immensely powerful in imperium and can tell everyone to screw off if they cant make it worth their time.
Inquisitor's and Rogue Traders are kind of on equal authority, they are both granted power above all else. And ultimately the person who gets the final say is the person with the most power and influence.
I was so pumped about this game i went out and bought all the total war 40k stuff, shortly afterwards I figured out it is a different world than where this is set, still I'm looking forward to this, owlcat did great with kingmaker and imo made the best crpg ever with wrath.
@@iandevine3063 There is no total war "40k". Total war: Warhammer is set in the warhammer fantasy universe. Warhammer 40k is a grim-dark sci-fi setting (some would argue also a bit fantasy. They are related, but two totally different setting) There are plenty great 40k games tho. I just wrote a list but accidentally closed the window, and I can't be bothered to write it again so if you are interested look them up or ask me nicely.
Can't wait to buy this game, play the shit out of the first 20-30 hours, get choice paralysis, then never play it again :D JUST KIDDING, this demands, just from what you said minimum three play throughs. Thinking my first will be a standard neutral Rogue Trader, bit of light heresy here and there, but mostly fun and profit. Follow that up with a hard line Imperial loyalist campaign to see how well Owlcat nails the corruption of the Imperium (i.e. brutalizing the hell out of everyone below the ruling class), and finally the most fun playthrough!! CHAOS ALL THE WAY BABY, IT'S MORBIN--- ER, MORPHIN TIME TZEENTCH DADDY!
My favourite chaos god is morbi- sorry, morbi - sorry I mean morbi- sorry I mean morbi- sorry I mean morbi- sorry I mean morbi- sorry I mean morbi- sorry I mean morbi- sorry I mean morbi- sorry I mean morbi-
that is looking really dope and even though its not good for the algorithm i would totally watch more of this kind of stuff if you ever have the itch to do more!
As someone with only the barest familiarity with 40k I've wanted to play RT for years. Excited enough for this game that I blew a chunk of change on the core book. I do feel that slow healing in a videogame is unlikely. At least not without a toggle or slider.
I've always wondered how well RT played at the table given the massive power imbalance within the party. With Dark Heresy, the party works for an Inquisitor but they're kind of like Charlie in Charlies Angels, never really being directly involved in the adventures themselves. But in RT, one player HAS to be the RT and all the other players are their employees and I struggle to see how that wouldn't inevitably lead to heated conversations at the table. I watched an RT campaign on RU-vid some years ago and that's precisely what ended up happening - as the campaign progressed the RT player would just end up pulling rank and overruling other players' if a particular suggestion or decision didn't align with what the RT wanted to do - inevitably not long after one particularly egregious incident the campaign just stopped posting episodes without the story concluding. But maybe that's precisely why Owlcat chose to adapt it for a single-player crpg.
The game requires some curation in how you do the game compared to more even-laid ones, but when the play is right it allows for much. That imbalance of status needs to be addressed: The RT can act as the agent for grand plot and help steer the direction of the campaign, or hinder everyone's fun with "this is what my character would do" shenanigans. Personally, I find a session 0 helps with this immensely, as does GM pick of the RT. My best RTs have been larger-than-life adventurers and conquistadors whose shenanigans lead to entire subplots derailing. And no one says one of the players HAS to be the RT, they can be an NPC. Though, I find having the RT as PC more fun. Tbh, RT played with a close-knit group differs from RT with loose acquaintances, as with any game. But it remains my favourite as the one with the biggest start-of-play: a ship and PCs with more authority and power than in many other rpgs.
I'm just hoping we get some Necron companions. They're my favorite race and I am absolutely certain that whatever choices I make, the ultimate goal will be becoming the world's greatest Necron simp.
considering how roleplay heavy and fun Wrath of the Righteous was, I can't wait for Rogue Trader. I'm even more hyped for it than Baldur's Gate 3! Edit: The "attack/die" is Owlcat referencing to TTRPG players who likes to kill every NPC character and ruins the game aka Murderhobos
I like the kingdom and the Crusader managements they’re the reason why I bought the game in the first place and got into the pathfinder series and I was a little upset you didn’t talk about everyone’s favourite 40K alien the monkey
I think there are several reasons the hype train isn't full steam yet. 1) Owlcat had to go media silent for a while after a certain event involving Eastern Europe. They have relocated their HQ and ops out of Russia since (mostly). But you still get 5 posts a week on Reddit about, "How cans you support Russian company!" Like they are driving tanks (or weren't as dissident as one could safely be before anyway). 2) As you noted, the subset of people who can speak well on this game is small. Personally, I'm an Owlcat fan. I know enough 40K lore to be dangerous. And I never got the chance to play the TTRPGs. So even if I did YT, I'd still be out. But I watched, One Mind Syndicate's discussion of it, and was frankly offended. They said, "Oh the trailer is cartoony. This must be aimed at kids. That's in line with GW's emphasis now." Umm...no. A company who aims games at kids doesn't write characters like Camilla or put full cannibalism is in your face 10mins into the game. Darkest Dungeon style art has been Owlcat's MO for trailers. Do 10mins of research anyway. 3) I think Owlcat is rolling this like they did Kingmaker and Wrath. The Kickstarter element in-house and largely going on now with those who are fans of the company. And as time gets closer, that money is what they'll use to promote the game in the industry. They have always eschewed big publishers. So they have to do that work themselves. I suspect that will start in earnest when the Beta launches.
Having both played and directed several games on most of FFG line for WH40k (Only War was... peculiar, and Black Crusade was too different to integrate as a useful resource to craft warp-infested enemies), I can say that Rogue Trader is in the perfect spot to drink from Dark Heresy (which needs the Ascension book to reach the SM level of XP) and Deathwatch alike, while at the same time doesn't really supersede the already existing Dark Heresy classes (for example, the Explorator has a much wider array of skills, but a Techpriest with the same amount of XP -and Rogue Trader had a box telling you how many XP "had" lv1 RT characters from the Dark Heresy scale- was able to be much more focused and effective, specially on combat duty as a Secutor). As for the Space Marines, I think that one is a Primaris (meh...) so I think it's right to think OwlCat will take it from Dark Heresy 2nd Edition (where everything is available in the core book, but you have to decide the level you play at). As an aside, Ascension characters from Dark Heresy were at the same level of XP than starting Deathwatch ones, and a player option was Inquisitor... Which is the only option to consider "radicalism" vs "puritanism". Else, the "morality" will simply be "corruption".
I'm not familiar with Dark Heresy or Rogue Trader systems. But thanks to this video this game just went on top of my most anticipated games list. I really prefer skill based systems over level based systems. I like that the game is brutal and lethal all the way through, even a street urchin with a rusty dagger can kill you with some unlucky dice rolls. Always have preferred games like Call of Cthulhu, Cyberpunk, Runequest etc over D&D/Pathfinder.
"companions available only w/ certain choices" ok I didn't even know this was a thing in WotR(didn't play, wasn't kingmaker 2) and I kind of VISCERALLY hate it conceptually??? like it's absolutely going to make the completionist in me incredibly pissed off, and also I like having all my options available. I mean sure I just run a merc party in PF:KM basically every time, but after experience not being able to keep a party member in Tyrrany, yeah, no, I don't like that.
I’m brand new to Warhammer and I learned a ton of cools things from this video. I’m a big fan of the pathfinder games, and hoping we get a lot more content from you on this game as it develops
As cool as space marines are, it will be very immersion breaking to have a space marine as a companion. Like, it would be unprecedented. Unless we can get chaos space marines or renegades... No loyalist space marine would be part of a Rogue Trader crew.
Having a reoccurring space marine character come in during several difficult missions to just face stomp a bunch of enemies would be really cool. He'd still be doing his own mission (I agree that just tagging along with a random merchant is a bit beneath what a space marine should be doing) but we'd also get the opportunity to have an entertaining space marine character and enjoy their overpowered ability.
A friend of mine actually pointed out last night that there's actually a lore tidbit where space wolves have connections to a navigator clan and offer them escorts to guard them, so that may be the explanation on how one would end up working with a rogue trader.
Some Space Marine chapters have special 'Quests' that they're performing as their holy duty. For example Salamanders are looking for their primarch's artifacts. It could explain why they accompany Rogue Trader that is exploring unknown regions.
They didn't "polish" Kingmaker. Not all versions anyway. Ps4 version becomes unplayable after a while and they never fixed it. Releasing new products while your previous games are in an unplayable state doesn't seem like an honest business model to me.
Man how can you start off by spewing lies about the pathfinder games? They are still a buggy mess and you are claiming wotr was quite polished on release.
This game is a mess. Especially on ps5. Don’t buy it. You will hate yourself for doing that. Your biggest battles will be controls and repeating every third battle because game crashed during saving. This is a joke game at this point. It’s terribly optimized as well. Insane loadings and serious framerate drops are a daily occurrence. If you really have to play it (not worth it at this point but be my guest) just ro it on a pc and use mods that did the job for the devs.
I don’t know what edition it was but there was definitely a version of RT that included Space Marine as a potential character in the character building section. I think the iconic example was even a space wolf.
Not sure if you are talking about the Owlcats' crpg version, since it was announced very recently, and many crpg people that I follow have already expressed their reactions and opinions about it. If you mean the ttrpg version, on the other hand, then, I guess, we should be very glad that we have the guys like them, who have skyrocketed the interest for the Pathfinder with their previous games and have introduced many of their fans to the Rogue Trader with this announcement (myself included), fueling even greater massive renaissance of D&D and ttrpgs in recent years, one of the main culprits of which is a certain DM mentioned in the video and his fellow "nerdy voice actors". :D Also ale.
I think the blue grey lady in the back is just a Navigator. She's almost certainly a navigator (rather than an astropath) because of the forehead thing that looks like an eye, and there is art of navigators using that staff too (in fact it's in the picture at 17:45) Also... I don't think that navigators can also be normal psykers (they're all psykers but they're like the special navigator kind of psyker that channels the abilities through the eye)
Rogue Trader was also what the first edition of the Warhammer 40k tabletop game, which functioned entirely different to the tabletop tactics game we know today. It was much like a traditional TTRPG, with a focus on singular characters and a game master. So I wonder if they're actually referencing that or the FFG series.
Well, as a fan of 40k since for around two and a half decades, and a veteran of every 40k RPG published by FFG and BI (aside from Only War) with Rogue Trader being my favourite... I can certainly say that this game was made for me. I am looking forward to this game, of course with the usual "wait and see" going on these days. //I also have a (inactive) RU-vid channel :P
I was excited at first, and the reference to Amigara Fault had me excited AND disgusted. This is a tiny slice of a tiny venn diagram and I am loving to be living in it right now.
I haven't seen it mentioned yet but the depicted rogue trader with the animal hide over his shoulder is most likely Janus Draik, the main character of the Blackstone Fortress novels and a playable character in the tabletop game of the same name. His story arc is tightly knitted with the Blackstone Fortress so this should happen before that if they respect the lore in this regard. It's actually what intrigued me the most with the trailer, seeing him there since I just finished the novels.
I am very excited for this game. I had heard that GW were going for a big video game push a couple of years ago. I was hoping for an rpg. And I am not disappointed.
Why did I have to see this vid... getting my hopes up for something cool. I always loved Dark Heresy (always had to run it and never got to play it), but I never experienced Rogue Trader. I'm super looking forward to this. I wish Fantasy Flight never lost the IP for this stuff... their production quality was great. I wish I knew more people who wanted to play that stuff.
I actually have a video coming out this weekend that's an interview with one of the devs for Dark Heresy, so it will lay out a ton of behind the scenes stuff from the FFG days!
Unpopular opinion : I hope the Space Wolf is an early game companion. I hope there will be a decent amount of the game centered around melee and this guy would be the pinacle of close combat, taking opportunity of the numerous mechanics of the pathfinder games.
Please let the Ship Management be better than Kingdom or Crusade and feel meaningful in some way other than just passing checks or having a dumbed down version of HoMM. At worst let it be a small part of the game and not distract you from the core gameplay.
Another potential way to customize characters (if they choose to go careers instead of DH2e's aptitudes) is Alternative Career Ranks. Basically they are second classes you can take that replace your main career rank with. (So instead of going rank 3, you get an alt career and then resume your main career at rank 4). These are highly specific and specialized and designed to provide skillsets outside the main careers scope.
Nothing makes me Like a video faster than it being about an Owlcat game and having William in it. 😍 I'd be the last person to jump on a hype train, but this got me very excited as most of the community. Thank you for the great insight, I am absolutely loving everything about it.
Personally would've liked to see more pathfinder games, but perhaps we'll see some more based on PF1 after they make this one. Fingers crossed. I'd like to see an owlcat PF1 CRPG made out of an AP with less.. extra add on mechanics. Maybe rise of runelords or something that doesn't have mythic levels, crusades and kingdoms, just good old fashioned adventure. I wasn't fan of mythic paths being bit.. shoehorny in enabling only builds of certain alignment and themes. Arcane casters had options of evil, evil and chaotic good. 40K just isn't that much my cup of tea, though I'll probably still buy the game to support owlcat, though maybe not on launch day.
By god if there isn't an orkboi freebooter and/or a weirdboi I will be very sad. I am looking forward to blowing shit up with an Adepta Sororitas as well, the bolter bitches have long been my favorite armies to play in the tabletop. Edit: So far the confirmed companions are a Seneschal, an unsanctioned psyker, a sanctioned psyker, a navigator (thats the weird pale lady with the red eyes), an Aeldari outcast, a Sister of Battle and the Rogue Trader themselves (also possibly a second one?) But as you pointed out in the video itself there are almost assuredly a huge number of companions. While the website has a detailed description of the Space Wolf, I doubt VERY seriously he will be a main companion, or at least he will not be one at first I would think. He might even be an adversary at some point(s) given their rather cryptic description of him.
When I first saw the announcement of this, I was kind of disappointed. Oh great, a CRPG instead of an ARPG or a first person game. Then I played (I think about half of) Kingmaker and started WOTR. Needless to say, I'm very excited for this game.
designers still don't understand what makes a good, old school crpg: it's not dumb arbitrary dialogue lines. It's that beyond them most of the times there's an extra choice that requires inspection and utilization of something in the environment combined with a non-combat skill. If there's two factions competing for a generator, the best and hardest choice is not to kill or spare or be diplomatic with various dudes with a dumb one-click dialogue line, but i.e. to find or fix another generator. The hardest choice is to think outside of the choice box and find the solution hidden under a cabinet or a frame (see Fallout 1 and 2), or even make up a completely unexpected one (see Deus Ex). The most important part of an RPG is the freedom one has to solve situations. I never understand why reviewers (in this case previewer) ramble for hours on about small boring technicalities (gear, hits, etc). Who cares? A Crpg is not a competition against the computer on making the most optimized killing machine. That's valid in action rpgs.
Lot of good info. Feels a bit skewed by your background with owls~. No mention of warp travel and ship management. Kind of a bummer that was passed by. Hopefully comes up soon. Also, really effective hype on your part. Looking forward to this game but also wondering how effective the range of play dynamic can be gathered with regards to economy, exploration, and character upgrades and wear and tear over time. Would like to see prudent, impactful management come along with that tasteful minigame feel that doesn't bog down play. Ship battle on th ttrpg being an example for extreme improvement in crpg format.
One correction! Nacigators CANNOT be psykers. They have powers thanks to their main, the third eye, the warp eye. Powers which can grow stronger and look and work like psychic powers, but they are much more specialised and much safer to use than normal psychic powers. However, thanks to their mutation they may not be normal psykers, and thus may not become Astropaths. Great video nonetheless!
"You can lose entire limbs" Used to play dark heresy and manage to get a character in a campaign up to the ascension levels. For anyone who does not know ascension is like Dungeons & Dragons level twenties to thirties. My judge walked through one door. one. My dm warned my twice and I still said yes. Que 30 cultists with AR unloading enmass. I was lucky for my Judge to lose a single arm and only BARELY hang on to life because of all my pain tolerance skills and feats
I was excited but that charecter splash screen with a space wolf so front and centre oof. Reeks of fear in not including recognised WH40K staples to push your game.
@@WilliamSRD good point, especially if they are telling a new story they could bring DH in after the RT game, since its Owlcat so you know the PC does something insane
Considering Owlcat failed at grand strategy game elements so far, DH game would really be more up their alley gameplay-wise. I think they have just picked more grandiose game. A pity.
@@DarkPuppy9 P&P Rogue Trader grand strategy parts are pretty vague and bad. Alone acquisition and upkeep rules I find okayish. I somehow don't expect Owlcat to make up for those. Well, we can't have everything. Yet.
Gotta love the Imperium's optimism naming worlds. Armageddon, Witch-Cursed, Seldon's Folly, Processional of the Damned, Corpse Fortune. Great names for a planet. Can't wait to die so I can be buried at Redemption. Kind of unfamiliar with Rouge Traders as well so I am really excited for the game. Although your party seems like an in-universe bar joke. An Aeldari, Sororitas, and Astartes walk into a bar...it will be interesting how that doesn't end in a gunfight.
I do wanna say. For Rogue trader, there is a background/personal history section in their extra books. You can even end up being a psyker or gain stats/skills or talents though this background system. Pair that with, as you speculated, the aptitude system of DH2E. You have a *lot* of options. *and* The Kill marine class does exist in the Rogue trader game! They are prefaced with "look out, this is a space marine, best to have them be in a high power game." Another small nitpick about Astropaths and Navigators. The Navigator does have a Psyker keyword/trait, but they aren't psykers like the Astropaths, their abilities are two worlds (heh) apart. They aren't something you can combo, sadly especially with how becoming an astropath destroys the main tool a Navigator uses, their eyesm
Late to this video but some feedback. The character art from 18:45 ff. 1. Sisters of Battle are included in the rules. They are in Blood of Martyrs. All Dark Heresy character classes are integrally convertable to Rogue Trader. The exp progression is similar with Rogue Trader starting at 5K exp to account for their starting position being stronger, and they progress equally up the level tree with 8th level cap as a Rogue Trader class being equivalent to 16th level Dark Heresy. I expect the systems to be fused somehow, and streamlined. 2. The character at the back with the staff is a Navigator, not an astropath. The eye symbol staff is similar to that on page 60 of the Rogue Trader book. Staves of this kind are common to most psykers, Wyrdvanes carry them as do some Navigators and Astropaths. The third eye cover is visible in the close up and the palour of skin and eye colour is similar to the options for a navigators appearance. 3. The other psyker is a mystery. He could be a number of things. I cant rule out that he could be an Eldar, or a half Eldar. He doesnt appear to be part of any order, or at least doesnt dress like he is. The eyes are interesting, that might be psychic power manifesting, or they might be cyber eyes. I think the former is more likely as bionics are very obvious in the Imperium. All astropaths become blind as a result of the soul bonding process, some privileged few gain bionic eyes, most remain blind. I tend towards believing he is not an astropath, but a different form of psyker. Maybe a primaris psyker, possibly an unsanctioned psyker, or a half breed. 4. The Space Wolf doesnt look like an 'ordinary' marine, if there is such a thing. Owlcat might go asymmetric on us with companion allocation. The Space Wolf might not be found particularly late, it may be enough to have support of more powerful characters intermittently in the campaign to make certain sections of the storyline completeable. Unlike normal levelled systems the Rogue Trader system doesn't power your character up excessively. You get better, but not that much better. A 1st level fighter in Pathfinder is fighting goblins, a 20th level fighter is fighting a Pit Fiend. A starting Rogue Trader character is fighting a gretchen, but no Rogue Trader character can take on a Bloodthirster. However such foes can be fought with artillery, or astartes support, or orbital lance batteries etc etc.
Kind of hoping for a Blackstone Fortress DLC at some point where they put in a rogue-like straight up dungeon crawl. 100% agree/laugh on functionally limitless re WotR and Kingmaker too. Thanks, subscribed! 🙂🥦🦖
I loved Rogue trader so much. Am super stoked for this game. As the GM of a two year campaign I am looking forward to a new story. Still remember my party one shooting my bbeg and me being like well s**t
