The conflict between the Carol and Rogue sides of her psyche was more ambiguous when I read it in the Dutch translation of the issue, because there was no way of rendering Rogue's Mississippi accent from Carol's more neutral accent in Dutch (so it was less clear which speech/thought balloon came from which psyche). Although I think a good writer could do the 'Wolverine and Fury break Carol free from a KGB prison' story justice, I think I prefer it to remain untold, and have it be one of those things that exist in the characters back stories, because it's fun for the reader to speculate about what exactly went down. This ranks among my all-time favourite issues of X-Men.

That’s really interesting, Ciaran, regarding the translation of the accents. Yet another example of why translation involves negotiation and inevitable loss. You make a good point about not filling in every gap in the history of characters. Next time I meet Claremont at a convention, I’ll ask him whether he had something definite in mind he wanted to tell, or whether it was just what you prefer, allusions never meant to be developed any further. Is there some special reason this issue is among your favourites?

@@comicsbazaar4508 it's mostly because the anguish of Rogue over Carol's psyche surfacing and neither part knowing where the other ends and Rossi's horror at this. The powerful conclusion. Just really good stuff.
