When Roky was locked up in the Rusk State Hospital for the Criminally Insane in Texas he probably walked with plenty of "zombies" on large doses of Thorazine. That drug has a notorious side effect called the "Thorazine Shuffle" where the mental patients walk with a shambling gait. He probably was also given that drug along with electric ⚡ shock therapy. All for the crime of having one loose joint!!!😢😢😢
Yep. Nothing wrong walking with Zombies, providing you know what you are doing. It can be a rewarding and positive experience. That said, It is important when walking with Zombies that you walk somewhere that is interesting and visually stimulating. It is crucial when in the company of a zombie that they are always absorbed and engrossed in their surroundings. When a zombie gets bored they tend to go into their general default mode which is eating people's brains. When that happens things tend to become a little awkward.
He's so shocked about having walked with the living dead that it's ALL he can talk about. Knowing Roky, he probably DID really walk with a zombie...last night.
I discovered this song back in 2019 thanks to The Forty Nineteens and I’ve gotten so many miles out of it, it’s unbelievable. Always get a huge smile when I listen to it. I sung this at my trade school while ratcheting on a car wheel and the assistant instructor was speechless. When I played her the actual song, she thought it was catchy but as you could imagine, it got stuck in her head for quite a while. Great to listen to whenever you want to get out of a bad mood.
"I Walked with a Zombie" is a horror film from 1943. Produced by Val Lewton (original "Cat People") it's atmospheric, low budget, a little weird, set in Haiti, early anti-colonialism subtext. . . definitely worth a watch. "Creature with the Atom Brain" is also an old B-movie, plot of which the song recounts.(This may be the no-shit comment of all time, but I didn't see it mentioned anywheres).
The music blog I first heard this from noted that it's the same chords as Ben E. King's "Stand By Me", and thus you could sign up for "Stand By Me" on a karaoke night and sing this instead. I kind of want to do it some day, but I've decided to hold out until I can manage to get someone to chime in with backing vocals.
I would LOVE to hear someone do that! An actual recorded cover or someone with some skill do a karaoke cover. So.... did you ever do it? Also! What was the music blog?
Originated psychedelic rock before Floyd or any heartthrob's. Underwent electroshock therapy , (ok electrical convulsive therapy, which was different back then, it was shock) in a psyche ward cause he had a little pot on him...sat in rooms afterwords in his mom's house playing an acoustic guitar to dozens of TV screens just putting out white noise..white and black ...emptiness.. musta wrote this song about the rest of our future...I walked as a zombie. Before any of it happened. Bloody guys a genius
Right!!!! I was looking up this song online and the first result were the lyrics!!!!! Wow, they’re actually posting the lyrics to this song. I found that hilarious.
i love how the lyrics change from " i walked with a zombie" to "i walked with zezombie" finally to "i walked with zombie" also every time I'm listening to music on shuffle and this comes on I think it's bat for lashes at first
"I walked with a Zombie I walked with a Zombie I walked with a Zombie, last night. I walked wis zezombie I walked wis zezombie I walked wis zezombie, last night. I walk with zombie I walk with zombie I walk with zombie, last night."
I know this is a "vintage" comment, but 3 years hence, I agree. If Jagger could make this one-liner work anywhere near as beautifully as Mr. Ericson, I'd be impressed.
I and friends of mine loves this song.... You can be as drunk (or high, for those who should do something as awful as that) as you like and still sing a long :)
I'm just discovering this guy and i got to tell you, every song gets better, man, i can't belive it, he's fucking great. I heard he got the old german.
This song is credits to a movie ! A great horror/psychological movie called Scary Movie from "91. Not the crappy Scary Movie that came out later but a low budget one that is pretty decent.
Right on ! Mike Williams from Eyehategod turned me on to the great Roky Erickson; I can't get enough of this music, it an addiction I am not ashamed of !

There should’ve been a competition between the two. However when you listen to their speaking voices, they sound completely different. Mick has that British accent and Roky had a twangy southern accent.
Who are the stones and what have them precious softies to do with ROKY -besides worship his manhood and adore the divine stones droped out his every bowel movement. One fart from ROKY'S butt and the entire stones discography sounds and feels and smells like rehydrated months old cat or human turds.
Now this is a genius just showing off. One line. I can't possibly see a need for more. Those backing vocals responding that "he walked with a zombie" make the song. Mr. Ericson, may you be one with all love amid the endless shimmering fountains of G-d's garden.
I don't know why, but for some reason I keep hearing about him today so I had to come here. And I do mean everywhere, it's strange. But then again the world was eclipsed by the moon. Do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do doooooooooooooo.
@arizonabay15 the whole album is a love song to assorted horror figures, i think of demons, night of the vampire, if you have ghosts, two headed dog, creature with the atom brain, stand for the fire demon etc
Don't be afraid to indulge yourself, towards things that may seem to seperate you from the boringness of conformaty. such is life. the song is a walk. Be the guitar!! apreciate the song. as at will always be......and be kind, :)
A little like jagger and alot like van morrison.so is the zombie really a stoned and or drunk chick who is numb or is just numb and gave him a cold shoulder while walking down the street? Or a date that went nowhere and they are walking slowly down the street back to hes or her vehicle and they are not talking.
+vaguelyhuman literally! but I think he is describing it as himself or a group directly that he can no longer identify with, he wakes more consumed and further gone each day through these rituals of ...let's be honest here speedballs, ludes liquor... a true zombie quickly devouring the last part of him until he wakes up essentially lobotomized that if you had encountered him good chance you saw the zombie. just my of being strung out right now it doesn't have to mean anything it's roky he could of sang how he was eating breakfast and some of us would still be along with him. it's rock enjoy feel it let it go
@@drowningin That's a good and interesting interpretation. I always understood it to be about himself as well, but I thought maybe it was about his Paranoid Schizophrenia. There's a symptom called 'catatonia', where sufferers act very much zombiefied.
All the jokes about the repetitive lyrics are funny, but for serious it kinda rules cause it leaves what happened to the imagination. Almost like he can’t remember. “Did it even happen? Was I dreaming?” RIP LEGEND
