The Rolair JC30WH is marketed as an Ultra Quiet Compressor. Its definitely better than the cheap auto-parts store models you can buy for $100-200. But it's not ultra quiet. I'd expect domestic refrigerator compressor quiet for that label. However, this is 100% tolerable, and you can have a conversation while its running standing next to it.
The Mechpro compressor on the left is so loud I either put on hearing protection or leave the garage until it stops.
The audio recording was made on a Sony PCM-A10 stereo digital recorder clutched at chest level. The space was a closed 2 car garage ( 6.5 x 6.5 meters. 3 brick walls + metal roller door).
