Jack, thank you for your excellent videos. I love your enthusiasm as you try out new gear, I always learn something, and you always make me laugh out loud. After watching your videos I always have a smile on my face. Plus, you inspire me to get back to the gear I have and just start playing and enjoying myself. I appreciate the work you do. I’m wishing you peace and happiness in the new year!
Wow! Patch #5 sells it. The other patches are not to shabby either. Play a Bass patch with the built in sequencer and then improv with patch #5 on top of the sequence. 🤯
This and the JX are the types that will leave someone skeptical if you don't know how to use it or do ur research on how deep it goes. I love the JD bc it has all the original sounds the JD-800 has and more plus can edit the sounds to customize & store. Again this is like having the original 800 in a pocket size. Great for gigs and travel without all the hassle. It's a beauty!
The only boutique I was interested in was the sh01a and I love it. It’s easy to program and practice on and this one. Don’t think I would buy any of the others but I just ordered this one and I’m stoked. There’s so much stuff out there but you know not everyone can own everything by teenage engineering and elektron but yes
I am your opposite.😜 I have 5 boutique models but not the SH 01 because is poor and It cost like superior models. It has only 1 OSC..nothing effects.. and the sequencer isn't poly..but the boutique yes. But is good for beginner because it's simple.
I miss my JD-800 because I miss they way it looked in the corner of my room. One of the best looking synths of all time. It was just too heavy and massive to hang on to though. They've done a good job of recreating the factory sounds on this, maybe I'll get one for nostalgia. The filter 'doesn't work' on that particular patch because you didn't have the best layer highlighted to hear the changes. The sweep was there though. Oh and if you liked patch #5, well that's very close to the original sound. Remember Prodigy's Voodoo people? Yes, that's the same patch, albeit played on the JD990, rack version.
I have a jd800 since it came out ... the presets were not good ... it is an outstanding machine but if I would have guided my ears only on the presets I would not have bought it ... It really needs custom patches
Top left has 4 buttons turn each one of the 4 parts of a sound on and off. The rest of the controls like filter will be edited on all 4 parts of the sound or if u just turn 1 part on only edit a slider then it effects only that part not the rest turn all parts back on or turn a few parts on to edit just those not the rest that's the way it works one other cool thing beside that 4 buttons is the slide area . If you dove in and edited say filter cut off on part one and then jumped out that slide area rembers the last controller you moved and you can edited it while you play a very cool feature how it remembers
It seems people are getting a tad moist about patch #5. Might I suggest interested parties check out the slash and malmsteen patches on the monologue. When I brought my monologue, it had a lighter taped to the side of the synth. I was, as you would imagine, left a bit "wtf" by this discovery, until I turned it on and selected the malmsteen patch, and realised the lighter was for raising in the air, alight, when I solo'd using said patch and the pitch wheel for all sorts of steve vai inspired madness. Only problem is, to do that takes two hands, so it turns out the lighters f#cking useless as t#ts on a bull.
Really don't know why they don't make these larger. They sound great but the controls on them are way too small (very short travel on the sliders) for proper programming.
I owned a JD-990 at one point and i tried to like it, but im just not a fan of that particular glassy early 90s sound. They were going for dirt cheap at the time. Ended up selling it to a very happy buyer.
I still own an original JD-800, and these sounds are spot-on reproductions of the originals (even that last sound - "Mother Afrika" on the original (shame you only have a two-digit display on the boutique, rather than the full name) - and it actually sounds ok if used in context rather than trying to play a tune on it!). The keybed on my JD stopped working a long time ago, so now I use the beast via MIDI, like a really giant sound module. Can't wait to get the boutique versions of this the JX08! It' s just a pity that (as far as I am able to discover) there is no way to import my original sounds via MIDI SYSEX (someone correct me if you know differently).
- I've got s dead JD-800 in a cupboard, can't say I miss it just like I don't miss the 90's, the strings were quite epic though, and the last patch in multi mode with a different sound on every key was useful.
You're the gift that keeps on giving, a bit like a magic pudding. You gave me my 1st laugh in a week with your succinct synopsis of patch #1 "the 90s". Nothing more need be said, and nothing more was. I'm also gonna quite blatantly, and with great relish, copy a couple of the examples you gave for patches, as they are, let's be honest here, far superior to the garden variety mor passodoble that I churn out far too often, much to my annoyance and disappointment. Stay minty bro.
I've learned to love the small footprint in my studio but still, maybe what a couple square inches larger for a standard psu and 1/4 jacks. At least the polyphony is there and that's where I was sold.
+1 on the juno voices upgrade, they should also do the jupiter. Add Proper color buttons, no ribbon, etc.. they seem like they have been on a roll lately, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they did it.
3:45 "A 1991 cop movie set in NYC is going through its 'somber and reflective' scene using establishing shots of the night city" is the patch name. Also, I really wish Roland would make the Boutique line a little larger. Does anybody still use the Boutique keybed? Do they even sell that anymore? It's amazing/terrifying they fit all those controls in that space.
They got rid of those waste of space ribbon controllers that ate up critical space on some of the other boutique synths. Those were a really bad idea, especially on the early jupiter boutique. That thing was terrible from a control perspective. I was happy to sell it when System 8 came out.
Serious Eno vibes 9 minutes in. Bravo! This is the first of the Boutique series I've really been excited about for some time. I still wish these modules could be used as controllers - like this could be a contoller for the JD 990 sound module, the Jp03 could be used like a pg200 on tthe full jx3p, likewise with the Jp08. Just a thought.
It’s the Zencore-based plug-in crammed into a box. As a result, there’s no sysex compatibility, so you can’t get the data off the cards into the machine, and there’s no expandability for the ROM, so the waveform cards are useless too. If you want to use the SL-JD80 cards, you have to have a JD-800 to hand.
Wailing Guitar on the JD-800 is one of the greatest preset patches known to science (even if I do only use it to play Voodoo People over and over). As much as I would love a new hardware version, the thought of programming that thing with such a tiny set of controls gives me nightmares. Menu-diving and lots of shortcut memorisation I can deal with, but this seems like someone at Roland has lost the plot then gone on to say, "It only does four?? Make it do eight!" To be fair I dunno how else they could have done it and I want one.
Mine doesn’t appear to work. Arrived today, connected to Korg Krome via MIDI and there’s a horrible monophonic sawtooth behind all patches which will not go away. I’m so disappointed!
Thanks Jack, great demo, It’s a decent little thing!! .very tempting...🤔.....( fwiw- Yes I agree about the boutique JU why doesn’t it have 6 voices (ffs! Roland😡)....but given they already done a ju06 & then ju06A...can’t see Roland a having 3rd go ☺️)
Breh, of course they’re gonna re release the juno one, its fuckin Roland. It’s 808, jupiter, juno, 909, jx, sh-x, spx0x, repeat They only re release shit to relive the glory days at this point that is all they exist to do. Prove me wrong Roland… oh wait (it’s not gonna happen until ownership changes or the year 2030) Tbh this is the only thing that interests me coming out of that stale place where creativity died
