In collaboration with partner Terry Lewis, Jimmy Jam emerged as one of the most successful producers and writers of the 1980s, his long history of R&B, club, and pop hits reached its pinnacle on a series of smash records for Janet Jackson. Born in Minneapolis on June 6, 1959, he first met Lewis in high school, and together they formed Flyte Tyme, a popular Twin Cities band which in 1981 evolved into “the Time”, a group led by Prince protégé Morris Day.
Jam and Lewis scored and produced countless R&B hits for the likes of Gladys Knight, Patti Austin, the Human League, Herb Alpert, New Edition, Michael Jackson, Boyz II Men, Mary J. Blidge, Vanessa Williams, and more.
The multiple Grammy Award winning duo has a long connection with Roland - noted for their early use of the TR-808 Drum Machine, which was used in most of their productions.
We visited with Jimmy to capture his first impressions of our new D-05 Boutique Synthesizer. Jimmy also reminisces his love for the power of the original D-50.

I STILL HAVE MY D50 after 25 years and love it as much as I did when I first got. I had the honor and privilege with working under Jam and Lewis when I was in Sounds of Blackness. 😘😘😘

Probably one of the greatest record producer duos(with Terry Lewis) of the 1980s. It's that Roland D-50 that made us dance, nod our heads and shake our bottoms. :D

I luv that JJackson Control album, that riff Jim played he called Minneapolis is from that album. Even when he played that simple opening run with the bell sound I could hear JJ/TL straight away. I'm not convinced JJ/TL got us exicted with any synth, it was the arrangement, quality and feel of what they played. If Roland synths were not available to them, JJ/TL would still create great grooves with other kit.

Not disagreeing with you, as I am a fan of LaFace myself and the New Jack Swing Kings. I love them all, but you should note they all played in different parks, even crossing over in the other's signature style (Teddy Riley and Gene Griffin's New Jack Swing and LaFace with R&B and "Slow Jams").

Jam and Lewis were the best! Wish Roland would make new full size versions.
@maccagrabme
@maccagrabme 7 лет назад
I just cant see the demand. If a Pro wants the full sized unit they would get a sh keyboard or the D550 or even the V-synth. Why has it got to be the full size when there are plenty for sale already? Also if Roland put full sized ones out there is no way on this earth they would have the same build quality as the originals which are built like tanks.The selling point is the small size, I already have the full size but I'm even tempted by the novelty of the small sizes.
@dwightddddd
@dwightddddd 7 лет назад
Hi Littlegee, I already own a D50 and I am a pro. Even though I own an original, they are a nightmare to program without the PG programmer and many people I know would buy a new full size version if produced. If these little versions work for you, I totally understand. Like you I like the small one, but without an editor its the same without the programmer. Best wishes Dwight.
@maccagrabme
@maccagrabme 7 лет назад
I think they will come up with an editor like their vst version of the D50.
@dwightddddd

If they do I will buy one. The little one sounds cleaner than the original and loads sysex sounds.
@dwightddddd
@dwightddddd 7 лет назад
The only beef I have with Roland is why the can't make a full analog poly. I own a Jupiter 8 and I love it still, but it is not worth the kind of money that people are paying. They should remake some of the old models to stop the nonsense and give new young musicians a chance to use and experience real analog like Moog just did. I am happy the did the thing with Studio Electronics, so there is hope:)

I really dont care what they do or say about it. Im talking as a musician who wants you all to stop creating rehashed sounds and explore beyond that. Most of the sounds we all love to hear like "classic" bass leads and bell presets i hope one day become cheesy and lame. Thats just how i see it now.

Justin MacKay People like you make modular users look bad. You can do your own thing without unloading your self-righteous baggage on everyone else
@MacKayJustin
@MacKayJustin 7 лет назад
Haut Strange wanting more from Roland because we've now experienced modular does not make euro users look bad it makes Roland look lazy. I just want more features that's all ;) didn't mean to piss off everyone lol.
@HotStrange
@HotStrange 7 лет назад
Justin MacKay I meant you specifically make euro rack users look bad with that attitude. Not everything has to cater to a certain demographic. Modular is not the end all be all. I, and many others, prefer hardware and that's not going to change. If you want modular, get a modular synth. Don't expect companies to make everything compatible with a rack or to only make modular synths. It's kind of ridiculous.
@MacKayJustin
@MacKayJustin 7 лет назад
Still missing the point....If its ridiculous than why use Studio Electronics and malekko to help them on one their only analog products? Its seems whatever staff they have aren't confident in their analog capabilities. The Boutiques would be better if they were compatible. So. They cheaped out. I think its crazy that you are so content with what they are selling you and not thinking about how this could integrate well with euro. And the fact they rely on their past way to much.... I guess we just disagree....

Back in the late 80's, I had a choice of purchasing a Korg M1 or a Roland D-50, and I went with the Korg. I still believe that was the best decision. About 10 years later added a Roland XP-30 to the Korg M1 and Ensoniq ASR-10. Nice instrument with a great history, and fan following though. And as Jimmy Jam mentioned about the smaller keys, I too started out with a Casio and it was the CZ-101. Still have it to this day.

Man Jimmy's always doing keyboard and tech demos. How come Terry never shows us any bass techniques and tricks?? IMHO he was one of the most funkiest bass players back in the day. Does he even play bass anymore?
@thespadestable
@thespadestable 4 года назад
@rraykwon - Terry does play bass on a few records, but most of the time the bass parts are left up to Jimmy or they'll bring another bass player in. Jimmy is the music guy, and Terry is the business guy. Another creative form they'll employ is Jimmy would work on a song, call Terry in with fresh ears, give a suggestion, then leave. From what both have stated, it has been successful.
@JJDPROMEDIAPRODUCTION

@thespadestable
@thespadestable 4 года назад
@@EIrizarryMadOfficial - You's people's emotionalism never ceases to amaze me. Where in my statement did I say Terry was not a proficient bass player? Both parties have long shared with their fans how they've delegated responsibilities which has been the key to their success since the early 80's. Terry handles the business side. He's responsible for the contracts, the hiring, the firing, and making sure the money side is where it needs to be. Jimmy handles the music/creative side and he handled the interviews. During an interview they had on the original Arsenio Hall Show they joked about how songs came about with Terry sticking his head in the room and adding a missing piece, then go back to his office. But you know, with the "it has to be all about me" mindset, that's viewed as not having a big enough footprint for the sake of getting one's just accolades.

@crnkmnky
@crnkmnky 4 года назад
Yeah, nothing wrong with that. 😅 Synthesizers seem to have two markets: *'synthesists'* for whom exploring the gear and discovering new sounds is part of the experience and/or performance; and *'keyboardists'* who honestly just want inspiring sounds so they can get on with what they're really good at. I'm still figuring out where I am in that spectrum… Albums made on older synths (without presets) typically employed synth programmers to assist the producer/keyboardist with creating the sounds. Some of those 'programmers' later made synthpop history, such as Jan Hammer and Harold Faltermeyer.

All, you seem to be taking more offense that's anyone here.

Oh and where has the Dr series drum machines gone. I'm waiting for an upgrade ;), leave the synth stuff to the analog/ euro makers, it's cooler, it sounds better and it way funner to make music with. Quit trying to sell me pieces of shit, Roland I love you but you let me down constantly. This is the time to come up with "new" sounds not the same generic shit I've heard on records for the last 30+years. Instead, "where's that flute sound" pretty sad and pathetic, seriously what happened to this company...
@maccagrabme
@maccagrabme 7 лет назад
You have plenty of 'new' sounds in vsts, too many to list and Roland released the V-Synth, Integra, Jdxa and System 8 for modern synth sounds which I don't think can go much further really, you have enough sound exploration in those synths to do anything you like. If you don't already own one then you have no grounds to argue about their current technology. However, there is still a massive market for classic sounds, those sounds still sound great after 30 years so there is a good reason for the demand. You are only limited by your imagination when it comes to new sounds.
@MacKayJustin
@MacKayJustin 7 лет назад
I understand where your coming from and yes i have owned and still own many Roland synths, its just when you dive into eurorack and see knobs and functions that do things that none of these generic synths can possibly do it upsets me. Cause i love this company but wish they would change things up a bit. Its just, i don't understand why they decide not to take full advantage of some of the ideas floating around in that euro synth world is beyond me.
