I fell in love with Corridors Of Time from Chrono Trigger because of this video. I've never played the game and this video introduced me to the song specifically.

Two things to clarify: 1: In the video, I specified the Cutoff/Resonance filters were bad, but I intended to say the filter system as a whole was buggered up - the example I showed of the sax was actually the result of the Attack/Release envelopes being interpreted very, very wrong. 2: Thanks to Technomancer00 for pointing this out: you CAN save data after power off... through a very specific and clumsy procedure. Go to the UTIL mode, set "Startup" to "User" and the 8850 will reboot with the last *flashed* user settings. To flash them, press both PART buttons at the same time, then EDIT, then press F2 to go to WRITE, then press ENTER to write. So yeah, definitely not 88 Pro level of convenience, but the feature exists.

The good part of the flash memory if it is anything like my XV-5050 is that it doesn't require any battery backup. No leaks!

I have just bought a Roland SC-8850 and it arrived today, for quite a few years I was unsure about buying one and previously didn't like it as much as the SC-88 and 88 Pro but after having Sound Canvas VA on my old computer I decided I would prefer a hardware module. So far I have used it to render some Christmas midi files using the Native SC-8850 map and GS variation although the SC-8850 trumpet didn't sound right with midi files but it was fine when I used the SC-88 Pro map trumpet. Some sounds like the steel guitar sound brighter and more crisp on the SC-8850 and I think the SC-8850 might be better for more serious production or use with VST instruments compared to the Burr Brown DAC used on the SC-88 Pro although I prefer some of the SC-88 Pro's instruments over the 8850's new instruments like the music box, clarinet and pianos. In the UK the SC-8850 and SC-8820 seemed more common in schools and colleges rather than even home studio users, I can understand why the SC-88 Pro was more common in music production and maybe that's why I sort of prefer the SC-88 Pro more. I'm still going to use my SC-88 Pro if I want to use SC-88 and SC-88 Pro sounds and don't want to use any of the new SC-8850 sounds but the SC-8850 does sound extreamly close to the SC-88 Pro with it's SC-88 Pro map. I think I was right to put off buying an SC-8850 until now but the SC-8850 is way better than Sound Canvas VA and the SC-8850 is of course better than the SC-8820 and it's 2 other models although most of the instrument sounds are the same as the SC-88 Pro, I did consider the SC-D70 as it at least has buttons to change to instruments and the variations but I now have an SC-8850 I'm not going to bother with any of the SC-8820 models as I had the SC-8820 sounds with Sound Canvas VA. It's fair to say I mainly wanted the SC-8850 for it's drum kits and sound effects that the SC-88 Pro doesn't have like wine glass and bottle sound effects and I do also like the scatt voices as well as the cup mute trumpet. I didn't mind paying £248 for an SC-8850 especially considering I was willing to spend £400 on other gear like my Roland R-8 drum machine.

@rdoursenaud 5 месяцев назад
@@brianbanks8570 I didn't specifically test with this device as I don't own one (yet) but I've successfully solved USB ground loops and other weird USB related noise issues with a multitude of devices that way. Just plug the isolator between your device and the computer. You will need to provide the additional micro-USB-to-USB cable between the isolator and computer. If it works and you want to make it a permanent solution, you may be able to embed it in the device, depending on your electronics/mechanical skills. If you're not comfortable, just keep the board outside, wrap it in something (I like to use shrink wrap tubing) to avoid accidental shorts and call it a day!

Linux recognized The SC-8850 right away without installing a driver for it! Works very good with all the 64 parts usable with Linux software.... Some of the sounds are dated, but can be edited and also sounds pretty good in the Mix with all my other Sound Modules!

Speedy (im a huge fan of these sound profile episodes)- do you know if the transformer on the sc 8850 is easily reconfigured to work on 120V. the SC-88 Pro I bought was set up for 100V but the transformer inside just needed to be resoldered to work on 120V (which i was able to take care of). I could not tell for sure on this one but it looks like this may be different than the 88 pro. I'd like to know how easy it is to reconfigure or is an external transformer required

great video! i was wondering how you managed to program change between patches like you did at 14:47? Im using the Program Change command alongside CC00 in the MIDI editor of Logic Pro 9, and every time i try to initiate a change of patch theres a little pop up on the sound canvas screen that says "No Instrument". I cannot seem to figure this out, and the manual says im trying to access instruments that the module does not have, but even following the instruments list to a tee its still not working. Is there anyway to fix this?
@ベンゲルのカナズミトム
In some MIDI files( mostly from the MIDI Collections and atleast one from Ys II Eternal) that Falcom released the drums are broken because the MIDI file changes the Drum Rx Part from A10 to B10 which causes that the drums aren't played. Do you know how to fix that? I'd appreciate it if you could help me.
@SpeedySPCFan
@SpeedySPCFan 5 лет назад
Which tracks do this? I've listened to a bunch and never had that issue... anyways, assuming the track is 16-channel and not 32-channel (in which case you need to get another MIDI interface to use Part A and Part B simultaneously), you can safely change the drums from B10 to A10 using SysEx. Try putting these at the end of the SysEx commands in the MIDI. F0 41 10 42 12 00 01 00 00 7F F7 F0 41 10 42 12 40 10 02 09 25 F7
@ベンゲルのカナズミトム
Two examples of this error can be found in the GS arrangement of Blue Dragon(SC0102.mid) from Sorcerian MIDI Collection and the SC-88Pro arrangement of Stay with me Forever(24YS207P.mid). In both MIDI files the channel 10's MIDI Rx channel is set to B10 which recieves no MIDI messages when the MIDI cable is plugged into Port IN 1. Until now I fixed the problem by using the IN 2 Port of the SC-8850 which sends MIDI data to the Part B of the SC-8850. This strangely causes the drums to be played twice. This problem was fixed by muting the Part B10. So this MIDI files are now played correctly but its pretty inconvenient and not really a solution as I still can't use Part A and MIDI files that require to be played in Part A(for example gloria88.mid) are now played incorrect. As I'm bad at MIDI programming and don't really want to edit original MIDI data by Falcom I need an alternative to your suggested solution. I hope there is one.
@SpeedySPCFan
@SpeedySPCFan 5 лет назад
@@ベンゲルのカナズミトム I can't really help you beyond telling you what to fix. You need to edit the files yourself.
@ベンゲルのカナズミトム
In that case it's easier to playback this and other files on the SC-88Pro which I also own.

I noticed on a forum that the USB problem is a Windows quirk. Apparently it works on Linux without any special drivers. Linux seems to detect it as USB MIDI Class compliant and runs just the generic plain old MIDI on it. neat!

Linux has quirks built-in. I've contributed a few. The solution for windows these days seems to be forcing the A-800PRO driver which has been updated. It works with my XV-5050 which is more or less from the same era.

Hey speedy you inspired me to grab one of these. You seem very knowledge so I'll ask you as I couldn't see it in the manual. I'm on mac and suprise the drivers don't work so I'm running the 8850 to a midi interface and I've ordered a pair of those rca to jack cables to record the audio. My question is does this record at 44 or 48hz and is that changable within the settings? And out of curiosity how do you record your SC's? Sorry for the long question. But fantastic content, I'm hooked. All the best, Jim.
@SpeedySPCFan
@SpeedySPCFan 4 года назад
You don't have to worry about sample rate with this since that's an analog output - it's basically irrelevant. I would recommend getting a USB audio interface of some kind like a Behringer UCA202/222 since the recording quality from a jack on your computer will be... not amazing? But again, no worries about sample rate there - sample rate is only relevant for digital output like an optical audio output. I record my SCs like all of my synths, using an audio interface~! I used to use a Behringer UMC202HD but have since moved to a PreSonus Studio 1810.

I'm thinking of possibly getting an SC-8850 even though I have Sound Canvas VA but if my computer crashed I might not be able to get SCVA back especially as SCVA is now Cloud only. I don't think there are any sounds on the SC-8850 that are terrible or unusable, I think most of the 8850's updated instruments are a vast improvement especially the string sounds whereas most of the 8820's capital gm sounds are SC-88 Pro samples.

@SpeedySPCFan
@SpeedySPCFan 5 лет назад
I mention it around 7:00 in the video, but here's the two methods for making it work: Method A: Set the drivers to Windows Vista compatibility mode and install them. This may fail, if it does... Method B: Plug your SC-8850 in and keep it in until it fails to work. Windows should tell you it's an unknown device or something. Go to Device Manager and look for "Other devices" then right click on "Unknown device" and go to the "Driver" tab. Click "Update Driver..." then "Browse my computer for driver software." Now, it will ask you for a directory. Give it the directory of where you put your SC-8850 Driver installer, then keep continuing on with the installation until it asks if you want to install the device software. Press "Install" and you should have a working SC-8850 over USB!
