It is always a joy to watch Jack and Ed Diaz talking about synths. This new Roland Fantom is really inspiring with all the new updates, if only our pockets could update as well to purchase and this beautiful board! Keep rocking Ed and Jack!
Brand new fantom user here and Roland guys, wow am i stoked. This thing is an incredible instrument/controller, really you guys have done a FANTASTIC job reimagining the synthesizer. Looking forward to seeing where you will take it next!
you guys are both great , as usual, HOWEVER: once again, Roland does NOT address it biggest weakness: the Sequencer, and it's inadequacies are still not being addressed.
"A synthesizer with workstation capabilities" - turns out, that's exactly what I've been looking for! Thanks for confirming I'm on the right track looking at Fantom.
In case anyone has this same question about the Model Expansions. Roland Support confirmed they are free for life for the Fantom. It's the software versions you'd need to either buy a membership or buy a lifetime key for each Legendary.
Excited to see the video with Jack's 106. Will it be a comparison to the Zencore model? This video made me want a Fantom despite being broke af. Ed and Jack are two of the most entertaining synth personalities on RU-vid.
One can really see how Jack is bit confused by the deeeeep menu diving 😂 Tbh, I can't wrap my head around it either 😁 Edit: maybe it just takes some short time getting used to and it's all immediately available if you know it :)
Finding pitch bend is still FAR too much a menu dive, as it is on my FA-06. It should be a one button touch or a combi press of two existing, because performers need instant change.
Ed and Jack!! My too favorite synth guys I love everything you both do I was wondering if you could show us how to sync a roland fantom7 to the another device the has sync capabilities let's say a polybrute for example I think it's an exciting time in the synth world I am a very lucky owner of a fantom a love this marvel of a work station. Thank you both for the deep dive into you products it's a great help for us old synth users getting back into the game and the new users learning the basics and having the fun of exploration in a new world of sonic and sound
Please correct me if my understanding is wrong. Right now my understanding is that a Roland Cloud Pro+ subscription or purchased lifetime licenses are required for the model expansions even for the Fantom and Jupiter-X, Xm. The model expansions are not included in the price of the keyboards.
Subscription is only for plugins, not the hardware expansion versions. The model expansions come in the Jupiter X/Xm. There is a new Jupiter-only JD-800 expansion that is paid. The Fantom expansions/tone packs are either free or lifetime purchase via Roland Cloud download.
@@xp50player Got it, thanks! It is good to be wrong. I have a MC-707 only. Who knows if the hardware model expansions will ever be made available for it. I am on the one year Roland Cloud Pro subscription that was given away with recent purchase last holiday season. I keep looking at the keyboards and thinking should I buy one or just stay with the cloud.
Roland need to update their sound library up to today's sound quality. Other brands have surpassed Roland's by light years in that aspect. Ironically, the JV 1080 (1994) sounds BETTER than the Integra 7 (2012). Check the Woody Piano Shack comparision. Astounding. Yet the later is used for all the current Roland hardware sound libraries. I'd rather have the complete JV 1080 for a replaceable sound library for the Fantom and all the other current Roland synths. Also, bring back the unjustifiably buried/forgotten 70s synths like RS 202 and 505.
If you are planning on buying this synth then be informed that this doesn't have a traditional sequencer on it. It has a very slow, basic, rudimental Ableton Live clip style that has a 32 bar limit. Even though this is called a Fantom, it is not a workstation so please don't make that mistake. Roland have no plans to include a traditional linear sequencer as this is mainly a performance synth. Furthermore, although it os a flagship, it doesn't have the same acoustic realism as say the Integra 7 which is a major disappointment. The onboard drum sounds are similar to a Casio keyboard and have no character and the TR drum sounds are not the same as on the TR-8s which are far superior in realism which means you'll need to buy another piece of hardware to get quality drum tones. Samples cannot be time stretched or manipulated in real time. You basically have to use a DAW to edit samples then import over USB ???? which is super slow and import at the BPM and key of the track you are working on.
Thanks for the cons too, I appreciate hearing the whole picture, which reviewers often leave out...@Menex. have any recommendations for a great workstation under 2k?
@@romanterry FA series...? They still sound good for 2021 but the sampling functionality is limited and there is no sampling to keyboard. MODX is a great option, but it's more live performance based than workstation. Then literally at 2K there is the Nautilus 61 key which is a Kronos without most of the live controls but all the capabilities that a workstation offers.
Is it just me or is this a glorified virtual machine manager? sorry Roland, I can't do it, where is the new stuff, not a new rehash of old. All i can hear is "Let's talk about all the old products Roland use to make, we used to be good"
@@ZombieTactics Yeah hard to disagree, some people will demand this, but they effectively admitted its the same sounds used in a ton of new Roland gear under the Zencore engine, so buy a base system (cheapest) and you'll get all those classics..... wonder what those same people will think when the next premier workstation comes out. Hope I don't sound too cheap when i say that!!
The new stuff is the Ableton+TR sequencer, more I/O, the vocoder, more polyphony, nonvolatile sampling/storage, RGB controls, Hi-Res parameters, both wheels and lever, new keybed, 9,000 patches, all the free PCM/SN/ABM expansions available in memory at once.
Agree. I’m using a Korg Kronos 2 now, I recently purchased. What a great sounding keyboard that is. I was thinking about the Fantom, but they’re still behind for me. Glad I bought the Kronos
RANDY JUDAH TORREZ ❤️ < *WOW* amazing guys 👏 Thanks for this Tutorial it's going to do me good valuable information perfect exactly what i need. I have The *FANTOM 7* 👍 *SHALOM* 🫒🕊
