One of the most iconic sporting events in tennis, the Roland Garros, is second to only Wimbledon in history and legacy. As the French Open 2024 begins we look at some of the facts behind the event.
The Grand Slam tournament attracts the best players in the ATP and WTA. The men compete for the Coupe des Mousquetaires (The Musketeers' Trophy). The women compete for the Coupe Suzanne Lenglen.
Roland Garros was an aviator, and the court complex named after him was constructed in 1928 to host France's first defense of the Davis Cup.
Many records have been set, the most notable being:
- Rafael Nadal - 14 titles
- Björn Borg - 6 titles
- Chris Evert - 7 titles
- Steffi Graf - 6 titles
The last French man to have Roland Garros in the open era was Yannick Noah, in 1983.
Winning Roland Garros and Wimbledon back to back, known as the Channel Slam, is a physical feat few players have accomplished.
Equal prize money was introduced in 2007, the last Grand Slam to officially do so.
Some of the iconic players to have passed through the tournament have been Suzanne Lenglen, Rene Lacoste, Henri Cochet, Ken Rosewall, Rod Laver, Margaret Court, Billie Jean King, Martina Navratilova, and Monica Seles among many others.
