It's important to have the mindset of how the patch is felt in the technique used. For instance in the horn pieces double stops or hammer on techniques, 2 or 3 strings at a time for organs with slides single note leads for sax. If played in a guitar lead style feeling you miss out on a lot of the units potential, It is a steep FEEL learning curve but I thank you for displaying the different patches and your time for making the video. Bravo!!!

I think your comment is right on. I generally stick with gear for a long time... in part because every new piece of gear (effects pedals, GR-55, etc) is in a sense a brand new instrument with its own learning curve. And a piece of gear with lots of presets is like a pile of new instruments acquired all at once. I'm still using the POD 2.0, for example, for home recording. I've been using a Korg Krome88 keyboard for 8 years and honestly I still am learning new tricks with it. So rushing out to buy a newer version of something may not always be the best idea, because a piece of gear is no better than your familiarity with using it in context.

I have been in a writers slump with regular clean/distorted guitar tones so I dusted off my Roland GR-55 after years for inspiration. I was setting up my synth to go through the sounds... SUDDENLY! I came across this relatively recent video doing all the work for me AND different ears and ways of playing the patches. Went from being in a guitar players rut to beaming ideas in no time. Some of these GR-55 videos go back 11 years, nice to see a new one. Thumbs up and a sub!

I must have way different tastes than you do, what you think is too much, I see as totally usable. I’m putting together (I originally wrote building, but other than fitting the Floyd, I really didn’t need to build or rebuild much) I will make a video about it, but it just popped in my mind for the ultimate ax, I need midi. I had a series of strokes a while back and basically have to teach my hands the functionality of playing again, so in a sense I’m creating a handicap instrument! Anyhoo, this is the answer with the ability to open tune on the fly and such. I’m a synth guy as well so I’ll be able to pull stuff off and expand my creativity by leaps and bounds. Thank you so much for the demo! Keep your eyes out for me and tell me what you think! Unless it’s mean! Lol, my rig is unbelievable, imagine this, the gr-55, the Gt-1000 with all of dreadbox and EHX, earthquaker, Beetronics, Eventide max, Bluesky, etc… then synths and drum machines, pads and real Harmonica and the Rc-500, it will fun! My goal is write and practice for a year and busker my disabled ass at a fair. PS I got at least 10 ideas for original songs from your demo! Really nice Demonstration! But you seriously need some anti slip pads under the unit, I don’t know how that doesn’t make you nuts! It would me! Lol

I have a Godin XTSA Guitar and GR55 , would you please teach me how to change Patches up and down using the guitar switcher ? please teach how to assign the XTSA Switch button so that I can select only Bank Up and Bank Down
@kaleidoscopeschool
@kaleidoscopeschool Год назад
here's how I use the switches currently. The "top" switch turns the synth pickup / functionality of the xtSA on and off. so if you dont want to drive the GR 55 for the whole song you can just turn that off from the guitar. The "bottom" switch scrolls up and down through banks on the GR 55. if it can be set to do something differently, I haven't explored that yet. I think it works well because the bank up-down procedure on the GR footpedal is not my favorite design, so you can use the guitar switch to cycle through banks of 3. Then you can select between the three presets in each bank with your feet... since -- natively anyway -- the switch on the guitar doesnt do that.
@MartinCraneRockbeast
@MartinCraneRockbeast Год назад
You have two modes. One raises the patches singularly or you can go up in banks so that the pedals then choose the patch.

What would make them better in your opinion? Are there guitar synth systems with better overall sounds? My feeling about a lot of gear (synths, guitar modelers, multi FX units) is that you often don't have all great presets.... With some it's only a minority. But you dont necessarily need 300 great sounds, if there are 25 really useful ones that's good enough. Some units like the Korg Krome88 keyboard have a really great percentage of usable sounds. With the Spider V amp I had to make useful presets; I liked very little of what it came with but it had the editability to give me what I wanted (I sat in Guitar Center for 2 hours with it before buying). What I don't know yet about the GR 55 is how editable it is. I've just been using the stock presets so far. As a music school owner I have a LOT of gear and wish I could spend more time with a lot of it

@@kaleidoscopeschool I like the Godin guitar line up. I used a GR55 with a Godin grand concert for a few years. Ended up using only about 5 tailored go to sounds (out of hundreds) like you said you only need a few good ones. What I found was, however cool it was to make my guitar sound like a sax or trumpet etc it was a b grade version and I just wanted a premium guitar sound not a guitar that sounded like a b grade version of anything. The Boss SY1000 is a much newer and more improved tech with more guitar oriented sound options that has my interest. A top end guitar and amp is always a good place to start. The gr55 is impressive and can produce some good sounds among a sea of not so great sounds. That pedal is awesome and flawed at the same time. Can't smoothly transition between patch's which restricts options when playing live. Also certain sounds can be a bit buggy if your playing many notes on many strings. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-p2RGPsAATRE.html The tracking issue can be fixed

Hello I'm happy to see that there are still people talking about the GR-55, thank you for your video. Being the owner of this product, I see you go around all the sounds possible, but never the piano alone? I wonder if you have this problem of note repetition especially on percussion instruments which seems to be a problem on the gr-55 if so how did you solve this problem? And maybe help me to direct me to a solution. Thanks for your video :)
@kaleidoscopeschool
@kaleidoscopeschool Год назад
I think I know what you mean....repeating notes from a MIDI glitch? I haven't ever experienced that with my xtSA / GR-55 setup, so I dont know if I can be helpful. I have experienced it with other MIDI based gear in the past; that's why I have a sense of what you're talking about.
@francisturgeon3333

Hello Thank you for your answer maybe it happens with nylon strings and less with metal strings but I have the GK-3 adapter too and I have the same note rebound on percussion instrument it's really disturbing when you would like to play the piano above all it does not matter thank you anyway. But I also have a Spark amp but not the same godin guitar as yours I have a nylon sting godin with a midi output like yours and a normal output like any other guitar, however your godin has 3 outputs, one midi, one pyzzo and another normal. In short I want to know when you play the sound of the GR-55 does it come out of the Spark, or just the headrush speaker? Do you take the spark amp to use the Spark application and the two other pyzzo sounds on the Fishman amp and headrush for the GR-55 output. If I understood I'm a winner haha. If I'm right tell me yes :) Sometimes other installation approach is interesting to do thank you. Thank you for your good work looking forward to following you.
@kaleidoscopeschool
@kaleidoscopeschool Год назад
@@francisturgeon3333 I've only used the GR 55 so far with the xtSA so I dont know about nylon strings. The xtSA has two audio outputs, the electric guitar sound I run to the Spark. I rarely use the Spark App; I just have 4 hardware presets on the amp that I created. The acoustic audio output of the xtSA goes to the Fishman. The third output is just the digital output that runs to the GR 55 (no audio), then the GR 55 has a 1/4" audio out that I generally run to either a HeadRush speaker, a Galaxy Hot Spot monitor or to the PA system

Is this just patches that are in it only? I don't see anything on the face of it to where you can make your own. I basically want my guitar to sound like a Synth, with some horns and Strings. I have one of these with the pickup also so I can use any guitar. I hope I haven't wasted my money.

I just did the stock patches/presets in this video. I haven't yet done much with the idea of editing it. I made one 12 string patch for Suite Madam Blue in 2021, but I think I just modified something it came with slightly. The menu system doesn't present very clearly with a "go ahead and make your own presets" vibe, but I haven't pursued the concept either way yet. You should try the Blade Runner sounding patch for basic synth (kind of a Pat Metheny Offramp vibe if I remember correctly). I think you should be able to find what you are looking for in the patches it came with?

You can turn off the chromatic when playing the `brassy` ones so that it jumps to the notes instead of bending - so sounds more like the intended instrument. Having said that, the merged polyphonic sounds are also very creative in their own right.

Why you are using pick for arpeggios which should be done by fingers? Nice demo and it made me to buy this little box for sure, but your versatility related to the style of play and different techniques which would be obvious included in video review lasting nearly two hours in fact are, I would say "slightly limited". Thanks for posting anyway.
@kaleidoscopeschool
@kaleidoscopeschool Год назад
Thanks for watching the video! I am primarily a rock / pick-style player, but I often play folk things without a pick. I don't agree with the statement that arpeggios *should* be done by fingers. Arpeggiation can be done either way unless it's a right hand pattern that involves plucking so many strings that there's no way to do it while holding a pick. There are a lot of considerations as to why you'd use a pick vs. fingers, and one of these may just be the convenience of the moment. My focus in this video was on demo'ing the patches as fast as I could, because I quickly realized it was going to take a lot longer than I expected when I started... so I'm sure I gravitated toward some of my more ingrained rock cliches playing-wise.

I haven't tried out the looper. I personally wish they would leave loopers out of everything. The kids in my rock band program trigger the Line 6 Spider amp loopers by accident all the time. If you want a looper buy a dedicated looper pedal (I love my RC-50). I think the amp modeling in the GR55 tracks well but its treble-biased to my ear (though the stock presets in many things seem to be) and I don't think it's trying to compete directly against a Helix or the like. That's a more comprehensive device that works with the audio output of your guitar. I would guess the Helix and similar modelers are way more customizable
