cool trick: if you plug into the second input, only the second speaker is enabled so with vibrato/chorus you can get rotary speaker sounds!

I believe the bright switch is actually a treble bleed. I own this amp because in Canada taking a tube amp around in the winter can be hard on them and its just good to have at least one reliable SS amp and Roland is a good choice.

Great sounding tones there Shane! The distortion side sounds pretty good too. I agree it does sound better by rolling back the treble on this app. Plus bonus points for that awesome '52 reissue Telecaster there!! The tele sounds great!

The secret to the JC40 in my opinion is the bright switch🤘. Once you engage the bright switch you turn the treble down to taste..about 9:30 is great on my strat. Pushing the mid around noon helps as well. This is the way you get a blackface sound out of the JC. It gets jangle and scoop which sounds very fender. Just a studio tip for ya. I record these amps all the time. Amazing amp.

Clean tones can't be underestimated. There's thousands of pedals and combinations out there. If you have a great clean tone, there's always a pedal you can add-on to change your tone how you want. Bought this amp and have no regrets. Besides...as a guitar player, there's no such thing as having to many amps, guitars, pedals, etc. : )
@duffman18
@duffman18 2 года назад
@@nobodyschannel yeah there's a reason people still buy those vintage style fender blackface amps despite them having no overdrive knob or channel. Because they have the most beautiful cleans. And so they can take any pedal you want. And overdrive/distortion tones for most of rock music history have been created with pedals, NOT with the amp itself. That's what people forget when they pay ludicrous sums for tube amps. Their favourite guitarists got their tones with PEDALS, because most of the time cranking the amp is not practical unless you're a nutter like Eric Clapton or stevie Ray Vaughan. Mind you, yeah, a fender blackface amp cranked, with tubescreamers (or other overdrive pedals) also going into it being used as boost pedals to crank it even more, that is still the most beautiful overdrive ever, it's POWER amp overdrive as opposed to pre amp overdrive. Which you can easily achieve these days by using the FX loop, using an EQ pedal as an attenuator to get cranked power amp tones at lower volumes by putting the EQ with every knob turned to the max (including the volume slider on it) and then plugging your guitar into the front of the amp and controlling volume with the master volume knob. But yeah SRV in the 80s just had a super reverb which he turned to the max and had two tubescreamers going into it that were both on max volume, and he just controlled his gain and volume by the use of the volume knob on his guitar. That sound is still beautiful. But it's just too loud, for home recording or even smaller pub gigs. So I appreciate when fender make new amps that actually have overdrive channels these days. But yeah there's a reason every big metal head uses amps with 6L6 tubes, instead of EL34 tubes. The classic fender amps always had 6L6s in them. Overdriving them is just gorgeous. It's just far too loud. So that's where pedals come in. They take any pedal beautifully. Everyone who listens to bands Ozzy Osborne when he had Randy Rhodes, wants that tone, and a lot of people like that were using the most boringly simple and cheap of pedals, like the boss DS1, every big guitarist uses them. Randy Rhodes mainly used a cheap standard MXR Distortion+ pedal. You can still buy them today. They're orders of magnitude cheaper than buying a big tube amp head
@nobodyschannel
@nobodyschannel 2 года назад
@@duffman18 Preach! If I had a choice of buying a $400 amp with great cleans, and $500 worth of awesome pedals, or a $1k amp with good clean tones, and good OD, I take the $400 amp. People also forget part of their tone besides the amp is what pickups you're using, and also ***how you set your tone***. I don't know the numbers, but I would be willing to bet a good chunk of people who have good amps, don't know jack about actually how to set a good tone. They could have a Mesa/Boogie Dual Rectifier, or Marshall JCM800 and make it sound like they're playing in a trash can. Half of it is knowing your equipment, and the other half is understanding how tone works. Great call.

Ive had this amp for about a year and this video is helping me take a fresh approach to it - totally agree that the amp is BRIGHT. Run a Roland DD-500 or RE-20 Space Echo through the effects loop and you will be blown away. Distortion isn't bad but a bit thin and shrill at high settings. I never get as good an overdrive sound as Shane did in the beginning of the video but I will experiment with EQ and pickup positions...of course I can't play as well as Shane either so Im sure thats at least part of the problem, ha ha. Thanks for the cool video, a very nice amp overall. It also sounds good with an acoustic guitar (See Paul Simon play the JC 120 with his Ovation acoustic at the Concert in Central Park -1981) and it is really amazing with an electric 12 string guitar.

You're one of the only gear reviewers on RU-vid who doesn't, 1. Play with the reverb dimed, 2. Play a Jackson and Van Halen tap lines through blues/classic rock gear, 3. Constantly dick off and generally pay zero attention to what tone is being created. Sometimes I just want to hear how a normal musician would use gear in a very typical setting. Thank you. THANK YOU.

Great tones overall! One thing though: the way you dialed the vibrato, there’s no wonder it sounded odd. It’s capable of going super fast, and at full speed it’s more of an odd special effect. When you slow it down and finesse the depth, the vib and chorus sound absolutely gorgeous

I have a distortion pedal with two gain stages and a 3-band EQ, perfect for this amp. This allows you to roll down the treble on the pedal itself, not the amp. So when you switch from clean to Distortion, you don't lose your high-end on the clean Channel.

Great video Shane. Clean, like it's bigger brother the 120, it's a fabulous amp. Agree distortion is usable as long as there is no treble in. It's a cool amp for clean, & clean with a couple of pedals. Decent amp for the price assuming you are looking for what it delivers. 👍🏼

I used to be in a band and the second guitarist had one and it just blew the pants off my fender at the time. Bright but warm and punchy and made my effects sound better. I ended up recording our stuff through that amp, no brainer. I honestly think its the best amp ever. Then eventually afterwards i'd keep seeing them on random videos like lady gaga live, Frank Black used one in the Pixies and i also saw Wes Borland with a wall of them. Just a great amp.

This amp is absolutely amazing. I'm a JC 120 owner and having that classic sound in a relatively lightweight box compared to the 120 is fantastic. Still tons of volume, excellent with pedals. The distortion in the old one was unusable, but this is pretty good. The amp is also super versatile. I play indie-rock, post-rock, and punk. It's also true stereo chorus, as well as stereo input and output so you can really get the most out of stereo effects.

I actually think the clean sounds awesome. i don't quite like the sound as you went into to the higher gain territory. it sounds so fizzy. up until medium gain it sounded really good though. what stood out to me was that the bass sounds really nice. i think it makes sense though as roland is used so much in jazz music, where many guitarists go for a more mellow tone. some amps, especially cheap solid states, have really flubby bass that has no definition at all. it really seems to be a great amp. great playing as always btw :)

One of the reasons for buying a separate distortion pedal for any Roland Jazz chorus amp, is exactly what you demonstrated, the treble control. The key to getting a distortion pedal to sound good with the rolling Jazz chorus is finding one with a 3-band EQ on it. For example, I have a Plexi Drive Deluxe pedal, with two gain stages, that pedal has a 3-band EQ which I keep the trouble nearly at zero. The advantage of doing it this way, it's I can leave the treble on the amp in a normal position for the clean tone, because the pedal has a true bypass, turn the pedal off, great clean tone, turn the pedal on, treble muted from the pedal itself, so you don't get the icy edges on the distortion.

Hi Shane! What guitar were you playing that had that crazy sustain? Love the look and sound. I had a Roland JC-120 a while back and for the cleans, in my opinion, it couldn't be beaten. Love this new compact version. Great review!

Good review. I’m a big fan of the chorus on the JC amps. To really properly demonstrate it though you really need to mic it up in stereo. That to me is one of the best features of this amp (the two independent channels). Great for stereo effects too.

2speedy4u22 came here to say that as well. Hard to really appreciate it without the stereo recording. Great demo otherwise. There is an old JC120 for sale locally that I’m super tempted to get.

Panhandle Gear Demos - The distortion on the JC120 is weak compared to the JC40. If you're using pedals for your distortion the JC120 should be ok.

the chorus was barely audible because of this very fact. it seems one speaker lets only dry, other lets only vibrato (for the manual mode, im guessing)

Great review, Shane! I'm convinced and that's your fault. Keep 'em coming. Regards from Norway.

You should add some drop tuning and palm muting into your sound tests

Never had a day of regret buying a JC-40. Takes pedals like a champ.

You don’t find a lot of these amps used and for sale. That’s because the clean is amazing and the pedal platform for gains is one of the best. This is THE amp we all want for the best of both worlds.

Great review. I have tried my HeadRush Gigboard through the front of a JC 120 at a friend of mine's, it's never sounded better. From clean to using Marshall and Mesa amp modelers the JC really sounded sweet, still can't believe the variety of tones I was getting. Seems like it takes amp modelers very well, which makes the possibilities quite endless.

Any chance you can get a Jazz Chorus from the late nineties to see how those sound compared to these latest ones?

Is it a good amp for acoustic guitars (for example Ovation)?

Had a JC-77 back in the day. It came with wheels it was that heavy. The distortion was awful. Seems usable now. They still do great cleans & one of the best chorus' ever. Their dirty tones are a taste thing with a JAZZ amp. Mine lasted for ever - till I traded it 'cos the pots got scratchy. Seems like they have made improvements over the old JC-77 with the JC-40. Luv ya work Shane.
