Roland JD-Xi Synthesizer - Building a Track From Scratch 

One of the best videos explaining what the JD-Xi can do. This could be my first synth!

That is the best tutorial I've seen for doing this on the JD-Xi - and believe me, I've seen A LOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I bought one 3 days ago and it is truly awesome. It is extremely powerful, there's a HUGE amount you can do with it - it is NOT a toy, I can cope with the keyboard with my clumping great fingers, and for the money, there is no way you will sorry if you get one of these.

After a year with mine, I realized I can do more with the boutique series for less money. But this has been a great little synth and is awesome at learning synthesis on a beginner level .

Ok that was awesome!! I’m a bit late to the party but I pulled the trigger on the jd-XI and I can’t wait for it to arrive! Maybe I’m an old fogey but I just can’t enjoy DAW’s, so boring. This thing looks fun as hell!

Incredibly powerful sounding machine - Wouldn't mind it in a larger form factor, a few more keys certainly wouldn't go astray. But I'm loving the banks and the delay sounds completely analog!

Excellent demo! Can you say something about the sync capabilities? Does it recieve MMC from a daw, so that its patterns always start on the one?

Hi after you recorded the music on 5:01 , can you use the rhythm as accompaniment., that it like- when you change the chords the entire music changes with it?

Can I find mellotron sounds on this synth like on the Microkorg XL +? they are displayed as tape flute and tape strings

Is there anyway I can change the notes or reprogram them

Thanks for the demo, Mark. You appear to be running USB MIDI as well as left and right analog outputs. Does that seem to be the way to go? Just setting up my JD-Xi, and I'd like to use it analog and MIDI with two DAWs on my computer.

with the sequenceur is it possible to ...overdub ? recording over a recording without erasing ? if yes that s mean 4 track can go 8 tracks ?

Mark this is great, but how did you turn that loop into the performance at the beginning? I just got my JD-Xi in the mail yesterday, and I'm wanting to learn how to program all the different drum parts for an entire song, not just one loop. Any ideas or videos out there you know of? Care to make one? :)

how can i record more than 16 notes ?

Hi I’m a guitarist ,lol . This is all new to me. Could you record a whole song on this with the sequencer. Eg hungry like the wolf, or planet earth, living on a prayer etc. Does the jd Xi have more sequencing tracks than the mickrokorg. Thanks, it’s all very confusing. I might get a dummies guide

I feel like I purchased a piece of crap since I am unable to do any of this on my Red JDXI. I have no idea how to keep the prerecorded from playing while I'm trying to record.

Really useful video. Couple of question if you don't mind me ask, as I can't find manual: 1. Those patterns limited only to 16/16th or could it be 1,2,4 or any number of bars ? 2. Does it have any "shuffle" or other type of real time groove modification - something like in MC groovboxes series. Cheers

just brought the JD XI just took it out the box can't seem to start recording in real time or step i hit play and there a song already playing do i have to modfiy some of the settings before i get started

Great demo! Just a couple of questions for Mr. Mark: 1) Is it possible to switch off quantization? I mean, what if I do not want my "sloppy playing " to be corrected? 2) Is it possible to apply a 'ratchet' effect on a single sequenced part? 3) Is it possible to apply "swing" or "shuffle" to a track or global? I would really appreciate if you could shed some light on this. Thanks in advance!

For some reason whenever I activate the arpeggiator on this synth, it sounds like its panning or something (kind of an ebb and flow type of sound). Is there some setting I can change to make it a regular flat arp sound?

Does it work without a program such as GarageBand or abelton live ???

Is there any way you can start with just a drumbeat and then build up the rest of the song from that?

This is just a general observation about synthesizers right. I don't have any education in music theory or anything like that and I have only a rudimentary education in playing the piano. However, I make DIY synth music (or at least try to). I've noticed of late that the black keys on the synth (the 'sharp' notes I guess) seem to sound more musical or 'upbeat' than the flat notes, which sound a lot more melancholy. Can anyone validate/explain more towards what i'm trying to say here? Sorry in adv. for sounding so novice (The JD-Xi is a serious lil synth btw.. I can def vouch for that).

i wrote Roland Support about this 2 JDXI units i purchased from Roland, both with same defects. the 1st unit was purchased in 2016 and it became defective within 1 year. i drove it to Roland/Boss repair ctr 50 miles paid $100 for repairs each time, never fixed. the unit's circuitry is defective for both Tempo & Master Volume knobs, causing the unit to slow down /speed up tempo while playing, despite the tempo settings preset in the Program parameters. Volume control slowly fades too. I bought the 2nd unit in November 2019, now it has developed the exact same problem. JDXI needs to admit its defective engineering on this device.

I cant say your vid has help me at all. For one you didny show what settings you were using. The tbo1 was a way different sound to begin with.. if i play and do what you did it doesnt work. Sorry but all you have done is confuse me even further.
