Roland LX-17 Digital Piano Performance by Miyuji Kaneko 

Only Roland can do this magic, hide a real grand piano inside a digital piano. Bravissimo!

for all those who hate the sound, this is how a grand piano sounds when you listen from inside the instrument. You can already notice the hammer noise. Since roland's has multiple speakers in their piano, they use it in some sort of way to make it sound realistic. it kind of gets rid of the hammer noises. If the hammer noises are still too loud, you can always adjust it in the piano designer app.

Damn, this sounded like a real Grand Piano, you can hear the hammers striking the strings and producing a rich sound with vibrations. I never got to hear this kind of simulation on my Yamaha Digital piano, probably because they (and Kawai also) use conventional 'Pure CF' (or simple EX) sampling, meaning that they directly record the strings being hit by the hammers on their grand pianos. This way, echoes can also end up being recorded, thus the sound either end up either muddy, round, distorted or too bright. Roland does not have it's own acoustic grand pianos or upright pianos, that's why they probably created this SuperNATURAL modelling technology to completely and accurately recreate an acoustic grand piano or upright pianos, thus giving a completely realistic feel of the instruments. Time for Yamaha and Kawai to also start using (or creating something similar to) Roland's SuperNATURAL modelling technology to sample or recreate their CF or EX samples, so that we can also get the feel of really playing a Yamaha CF series grand or a SK-EX grand, as if we were really playing them in real life! I hope this helps!

Connect ur iPad to learn/move through scores, stream music through its amazing 8 speaker projection system from your phone, play the piano silently to not bother others with headphones, a limitless polyphony and decay, not to mention the advantages for teaching children to play. This thing will not only become a piano to learn and grow with but it'll be the new centerpiece of my living room. With 10 year warranty and never needs servicing/maintenance. It's the perfect solution for me :) And... Whenever I'm sick of playing it I can use it as an amazing sound system. No matter what anyone says an acoustic piano will never give you the motivation to play it as much as this one does. So it's a choice of an acoustic piano which will eventually become a future space filler or a digital piano that has more than just one function and remains purposeful and functional.

I was skeptic about Roland pianos' sound.. till I'd listened to the studio recording of Matsuev playing on the concert grand... Roland pianos have amazing realistic sound.

A few comments regarding discussions on this "blog" between what's best between digital and acoustic pianos. There are many factors involved, it's not strictly a "black or white" issue. For instance, I am desiring one of the best acoustic pianos in the world: The Steinway D-274 (Hamburg, Germany) 9 foot concert grand piano that has been played by most renown concert pianists today and throughout past years. However, its cost new is close to US$200,000. Therefore, in the interim I am seeking the best digital piano that comes closest to replicating my aim in a Steinway concert grand; in piano key action and most importantly, in the quality of sound to resemble the Steinway. Additionally, I would like to take advantage of the hundreds of orchestral and midi sounds and effects available on the Yamaha and Roland, not as much found on the Casio and Kawai. So I'm looking at the Roland LX17, the Yamaha CLP-685, and others, including the RD2000. I play classical, jazz, and other styles, so I would like the option to create "tracks" with orchestral/synthesized sounds and rhythms, and effects, as well as the option to perform live. Regarding the Roland RD2000, it is only 48 lbs. in weight compared to the Roland LX17 which is 185+ lbs in weight. The RD2000 is portable and can offer that advantage, as well as having 1100+ sounds compared to 300+ in the LX17. All of these factors have to be considered. Top-of-the-line digital pianos have been shown to be able to execute ANY classical (or other genre) difficulty, like fast trills; Roland HP603, HP605, LX7, LX17, RD2000, Yamaha CLP 600's especially their top-of-the-line CLP-685, and others. They have excellent piano key mechanical action. Additionally, as one gentleman pointed out, it is NOT just classical music that demands a fantastic quality piano sound and piano key action. For instance, most superb jazz pianists have a classical background and play on either the Steinway or Yamaha acoustic concert grand (the latter usually because they are endorsing that brand piano). Examples include Keith Jarrett on Steinway, Chick Corea endorsing the Yamaha. Herbie Hancock is under endorsement by the Fazioli piano. These musicians endorse electronic equipment and acoustic pianos; anything that lends expression to their craft. The retail cost of a Roland RD2000 at US$2,500 compared to the LX17 at US$7,000 can be a huge consideration, unless one is wealthy or receives a substantial discount. I have learned that in considering ANY important issue in life, there are usually MANY points of view to consider and evaluate. We can express our views and hopefully respect others who may differ from ours. It's not always easy, but in today's world where "conflict" is intentionally stirred up by the media and destructive powers that be, exercising a tactic, "divide and conquer" by creating strife, we all would do well not to be "triggered" by that negativity. Instead, we can aim for harmony with others. I think that's the beauty of music, to bring harmony to the world.

Really impressive! I own an HP603 with same modelling engine and keyboard action; the sound of built-in acoustic system is now that great, but with earphones it sounds just as good as LX-17. Same for the recorded tracks. Thanks, Roland, for a progressive technology!

I have moved my Ivers & Pond console piano 18 (!) times and about to move #19. I decided to sell my heavy console piano and happened to inquire at a large piano dealer in my city about their pianos to see what mine would be worth. I happen to try the Roland digital LX705 and was BLOWN AWAY. I immediately bought it and am looking forward to a realistic sounding piano with a smaller footprint and a lot lighter weight. I am sooooo impressed with Roland.

If Roland thinks this is such a ground-breaking piano sound, why not have a piano shoot-out, and allow others to play the MIDI file and compare to the tone of Roland. It couldn't be that hard to get Miyuji to give consent to his performance, the musical content is definitely not under copyright at this point...

Excellent playing! I have heard that listening through RU-vid computer is not accurate to the reality of playing the Roland LX17 live. That being said, in this recording the upper register high notes sound way too "tinny" and lacking clarity/strength. Any comments about this from others who may have an LX17?

i hope that it sounds live as clear as on video, because the new hp 605 doesn't which should be the same sound engine. actually I've tested the hp605 and it very disappointed me. the sound gets distorted once played more notes. even on headphones.

Why should someone ever buy such an expensive electronic piano where its going to die in a few years when the electrolytic caps are dryed out instead of buying a REAL THING which lasts a lifetime ???

I believe that it is necessary to first learn on an acoustic piano if one would hope to ever play as well as this. I do not believe one could get to this level of proficiency solely through a digital piano learning and training experience. Is there one example of someone who did it? I feel that it is less than forthright to hire a classically trained pianist to demo a digital piano in this way shown in this video. Digital modeling in electric guitar amplification, for example, makes my ears bleed. And, I have never sat down to a digital piano that sounded and felt like an acoustic piano. So I understand the disapproval and rejection that others have expressed here. If one is aching for a set of black and whites keys in a box with a cord to plug into a receptacle, why not acquire a Fender Rhodes or a Wurlitzer and have something of both genuine musical and financial value. As stated in a comment below, in ten years one will suffer a 90% depreciation on this and any digital p.s.o. (piano shaped object).

Those higher notes is REALLY irritating !!

This is ridiculous. Firstly you can clearly hear that the sound is miles away from an original piano. Secondly it will cost nearly as much money as the real thing and in - let´s say - ten years it will be outdated by new technology and worth a tenth of it´s original price. Guys - don´t let them fool you.

Roland sound is too digital. Listen to top of the range Kawai it's so much better.

How is the weight of the keys? Because it doesn't completely made of wood
