Poor Roland…but here it comes!!! Final episode is a doozy 💕👽💕

Such a sweet rewatch. Forgot how adorable Roland and his gal were.

This one is a tear jerker for sure and you were not alone in getting emotional on first view. One of the things I'm really enjoying from your reactions is that much as you are loving the series, it doesn't cloud you from being critical when it's warranted and you are right, the trope they use here of someone being haunted/stalked/controlled by someone dead is growing a bit tired from having being used a bunch of times in this first season. Having said that, still a great episode. Now on to the final one of S1...

Arthur wasn't dead, that was the point. 'Brain alive in a jar' is an old trope going back to Frankenstein.

This made me sad too. I used to live with my late Uncle, who had Down Syndrome. He was in his 40s, but mentally was a toddler. It always broke my heart to see him struggle through some of the unfortunate things that came with being an adult, such as worsening health.

Some really top-notch acting in this episode! I agree that they overused the possession theme a bit during this season, but the phenomenal, emotional acting still makes me appreciate this episode. Thanks for the reaction!

I've always like the actor that plays the bad dr in this episode, mainly because he plays different aliens in all the 90's star trek shows, and they are all amazing. can't wait for the finale!

I totally agree with you Juliette, this was an emotional episode. The actor playing Roland did an amazing job and I felt a lot of empathy towards the character. I think this was one of the better episodes from season 1 but like you said, there are a few too many episodes with a similar type of premise. Great video Juliette, looking forward to the next one.

Wow, such a sad ending! I think Roland will be ok, under custody of the caretaker. But I did get a little chill in the last scene, when Roland was brushing his hair in the mirror. For a few seconds, did you notice Roland's expression change... I think Arthur's consciousness had somehow transferred to Roland before his head thawed. A bit of dark humor in this episode! The body tape around the poor scientist who lost his head, with smaller pieces of tape where his head should be. 🙄

"...Whoaoooa...okay, he's gone. That formula, that Roland..." And she carries on!😅 Really, this is a recurring theme, in a few of the season 1 episodes, but this was the most emotional version of the tale. In fact it was somewhat odd, in that, Mulder and Scully both had a, somewhat, diminished role, with the episode being carried by Roland, and Tracy. It may not be the best X-Files episode, but these two actors did a great job. Possessions, by whatever manner, were popular at the time, although you are correct. They used it a bit too much. I seem to remember reading something, to the effect they didn't know if the show would catch on, and they had to rush a few things to make a full season. But the back story is still developing, and the future has many good episodes. Thank you for sticking with the journey, Jules!😊 Enjoy the weekend!

I won't spoil the season finale, but what I will say is that it's *very* good.

The actor who played Roland is Zeljko Ivanek. He has appeared in numerous productions, including "Lost," "24," "True Blood," Heroes" and "Banshee." All of these series are among my favorites of all time and deserve a look.

One of the more emotional stories in the early seasons, but agree just a couple too many possession/ghost stories. Really ready for the myth arc… how fortunate ERLENMEYER FLASK is up next, one of the best season finales in television history. Loving going through these with you Juliette!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

I wonder why Arthur would kill the others. Unless they conspired to kill him in the accident, why else would Arthur send Roland after them?

You are reminding me of Mulder when you watch the X-Files. You’re really questioning things and showing empathy to the victims which is what Mulder does. DD was great at acting him. If you choose to continue with Season 2, I will gleefully anticipate that ride!

This is a very affecting episode largely due to Zeljko Ivanek's amazing performance as Roland. It is a pretty emotional episode because of that so I'm not surprised you were touched by it, the final scene with him and Tracy especially. I also really love the theme composer Mark Snow gives to Roland too which adds a lot also to his character. As for the comment about several episodes in the first season dealing with believed dead people returning in some form I personally don't agree that some of the stories feel too samey even so because I feel some very different applications of the idea have been used in the various episodes. I actually count Season 1 as one of my favourite seasons of the show because for me its a season where pretty much every story I find consistently good (and I can't say that about some of the other seasons). Also I tend to really enjoy first seasons of shows maybe more than others do because I like seeing the beginnings and the development of a series format and often there's a freshness and some feeling out of the concepts that produces some interesting stories that you might not then have a chance of seeing their type in later seasons. I think its interesting though with series that are long-runners like this one to see the different ways people perceive the stories and seasons. I think there are times i agree with general fandom opinion and certainly some times i don't. I'm going to continue to enjoy your journey, Jules, to see your own opinions on everything 🙂

I can understand your criticism about having the same basic theme a little too often. Personally, I've felt a couple times that maybe the story is a bit too similar to a previous episode. When a show runs for many seasons, it is natural that some themes are repeated in every season, but we are still on the first season, so maybe they were unsure about the continuation of the show and used themes that they thought would be popular, I don't know. Like someone else commented, I also felt like Mulder and Scully were more like side characters in this episode. Not a bad episode, and I also felt bad for Roland, but not one of my favourite episodes. I like your blue background lighting. It feels a little spooky and works well with X-files.

Roland and Tracy should have a happily ever after.

I agree they did over use the spirit body jumping trope in Season one. I'm pretty sure they don't use this trope much in the accompanying seasons if at all. It's been a while since I watched all the episodes though so it could pop up again.

Hi Jules, Some of the themes and tropes seem similar or repetitive but, I think it's the story and performances that draw you in. Kind of like how emotionally invested you became in Roland. Of course, YMMV on that.

This episode is okay. Good performances but you're right about there being a few too many ghost stories in season 1. There are way more aliens in season 2! 👽👽👽 Can't wait!
