The R-70, a machine I got back in 1992. This device was integral in helping me write songs and recording them. This is a quick overview and demo, plus the segment from Roland's promo VHS tape promoting the R-70. It really is an incredible machine.

Thanks for uploading this video. I used to own this exact unit from the early 90's up through 2009 when I sold it after being laid off from work. Personally, I feel that the R-70 is still the best drum machine ever made! Wouldn't it be awesome to have this exact unit modernized with modern-day memory sizes and additional drum kits? At some point, I plan to buy another one, because I have not yet found anything else that can top this unit. I dont like using loops, it's more authentic when you do it yourself by hand, and manually programming daw sequencers isn't as much fun. Plus, it takes too much time from playing the actual instruments. This R-70 unit was always quick and easy, and if I couldn't play whatever drum pattern that I was thinking of, I would just slow down the tempo and record it slowly, or use step recording. Another reason, that i would love to buy one again soon is that I still have my memory cards, that contain some of my best songs. I wrote over a hundred original hard rock songs using this unit as my drums, and bass and it has always sounded just like a real drummer, and pretty close to an actual bass. Although, I would usually use the R-70 bass track as a scratch track and replace it will an actual bass guitar. ( Edit : fixed spelling and readability)

Thanks for watching. The R-70 was a mainstay in my studio for years.. Many MANY songs written using this machine. I would joke and tell folks my drummer's name was Roland. Stay Safe!

i can not get over the sound , its great ( I never liked human drummers ) also micing a full kit and mixing it down was a real pain.

Hi there, the positional pad doesn’t sound in the middle? It makes sound on the sides, but it doesn’t register hits in the middle of the pad. Manual doesn’t say anything about low volume on positional pad so I’m inclined to think it’s a functional problem. Any idea on what is wrong with it?

That would indicate a sensor failure on the pad. Probably very hard to get a replacement. It's good that the position pad isn't critical for the machine to still function.

Roland is still in business. I would contact them for the information you seek.
