A lot of the soundtrack to the GBA game Mother 3 was composed using this synth (and the JV-1080). I didn't know this, so hearing the samples from the game's soundfont in such high fidelity took me by surprise. Great upload!
I still use it today, as a daw plugin, it is absolutely amazing, I run it on FL Studio, and its free ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-t0t6V3yQrs4.html
Roland SC-88 Pro was used in all of generation Pokemon games (Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Fire Red and LeafGreen), and I find it extremely nostalgic. I have the Sound Canvas VA plugin and I use it quite often in my compositions. Such an amazing piece of gear.

The guitars do indeed sound sick in some of these tracks, especially 12. Some of that is down to the sounds being good, but I have to say, having dissected the actual MIDI files a bit, a lot of that is down to *incredibly* skilled programming. A lot of what sound like single parts are actually very layered and make use of multiple instrument patches and a lot of carefully programmed pitch-bends for the legato sections of the lead lines. This isn't to say the unit itself isn't incredible, but definitely a lot of credit should go to the people composed/implemented the tracks.
Roland have always had the best piano sounds on any sound module , keyboard or organ I own a Yamaha flagship model keyboard and I always use my Roland for piano 🎹
I have 4 Sound Canvas moules including the SC-88 Pro and I still use them. I don't think there are any sounds on the SC-88 Pro that are unusable. Some of the sounds like the electrc guitars, flute and clarinet still sound realistic enough to fool some people. The clean guitar is still one electric guitar sound I use a lot even today especially if I need that particular tone. Even though I also now have the SC-8850 I still prefer some of the SC-88 Pro's sounds like the pianos and clarinet and I prefer the SC-88/88 Pro drum kits. The SC-88 Pro is also capible of emulating the SC-88/88vl 100% although SC-55 emulation can be a bit off so if you can you should also get an SC-55 if you particularly like the SC-55's sounds.
New subscriber alert. ✌️😎 Awesome video thank you for taking the time to make this video. Showed me everything I needed to know ,to know! I gotta get my hands on one of these. Has that final fantasy sound I'm looking for. Many thanks from Usa
What graphic equalizer have you overlaid on the sb-55? It is impressive how good that sounds. I have sc-88vl I use on my vintage computer, it’s not sounded that good. Just shows what you can do if you know what you’re doing on of these 1990s machines
@@DearHoney_1996 I am planning to buy the M Gs64, which I believe it is a replica in rack mount version. I ve seen one for 60 euros in my country, the only thing I will miss is that will not fit in my half rack sound canvas tower :/
@@aramis844 Roland M-GS64 is the same model as SC-88, not SC-88 Pro. I have checked M-GS64 front panel, doesn't like SC-88 Pro's LCD screen, only digits. If M-GS64 can satisfied you, I think Roland SC-8820 is much better, with smaller size, more sound patches, and fully compatible SC-88 Pro. But I think SC-8820 should be much more expensive than 60 euros. (cry)
@@DearHoney_1996 Yes, actually with the crisis Im job less, I should not spend on gear, but I am selling some equipment including a good condition cm32-L, but somehow your videos makes me nostalgic for soundcanvas music, now I need one of the latest series I dont own (sc88 and above)
@@sajp8859 sorry、It's smart. You don't have to use a computer to play midi data. We make use of such a unique module! There is no waste. Midi is something that you can easily enjoy.
Lo-Fi Jazz is like that by itself. I also thought it was a problem with Sound Canvas VA, and then I realized that the MIDI is programmed that way. This also gives it a vintage, old speaker style.
Lo-fi JAZZ made me laugh! Although it seems a new module that is steady and clean, the vinyl had got a scratch.. unf...wbl- unf..wbl- unfwwwwrtunately.

Question: is all the midi processing done strictly through the SC-88 Pro or do you have other modules connected? Because I see you a VU and the Rolan XV-5050 in your setup and I was wondering if they were doing anything or if they are just talking up space/for looks?
It is the Demo for SC-88 Pro, I just use SC-88 Pro to perform, no any other equipment. :) VU meter is the recording wave file I sent into computer to produce the dynamic graphics just for fun.
Hey ! Impressive sound ! I had a sc-88 pro almost 15 years ago but I never ear distorted guitar sounded like that !! Is this the original one ? I mainly worked on cubase software in the past but all guitar I ever find was very synthetics.
@@DearHoney_1996 WHAAT! I was wandering whether or not SB-55 had offered some sorta plug-in display like the way how Pioneer had included in their DEH- series car stereo sets😅
There are no soundfonts for this but Cakewalk's TTS-1 is a general midi 2 VST instrument based on a mix of SC-88 Pro and SC-8850 samples and especially considering it's free it's not bad apart from the standard kit having the same issue with snare 2 as the Roland E09 were the tight snare/rimshot is a synth snare. Honestly Sound Canvas VA is not expensive and it's the cheapest way to have all the sounds from the SC-88 Pro plus all the SC-8820 sounds so SCVA is basically an SC-88 Pro with more drum kits and slightly more GS variations. Or you could save up and buy an actual SC-88 Pro. If you have a job then paying a few hundred for one is no hardship.
@@LittleRichard1988 TTS-1 is a good tool, I do not have money for the SC-88, I do not know where to buy it, the Roland company does not produce mini versions, as it was with Jupiter, Juno and other tools, I will try to look for the SC-88 in stores where similar products are sold.
