This tutorial is no nonsense and clear in the information it gives. I really appreciate somebody explaining things in a sober way without 'heeeeeeyyyyyy duuuuuuuude, here's my newwwwww toooooooy' going on. We need more of this type of tutorials. Big fat thumbs up.
And, "Dis is yo boy Bubba wif ma new toy." or "Hey You Tubers before I go any further be sure to Like and Subscribe, you hear me LIKE and SUBSCRIBE and they repeat it about 5 or 6 times. So, Yep I agree with you a straight forward, easy to understand tutorial and those are the folks I usually subscribe to. Oh, and yes I realize this post is 4 years old.
I’ve been using synths for 20 years and this video is pure knowledge of this instrument. I’ve learned must of this by self teaching, but I did learn a few tricks. I’d recommend this video to anyone looking to learn synthesis let alone this unit.
Wow! Exceptional tutorial. I wish every Roland Boutique had a video like this that explained all the features so thoroughly. The included paper manuals are pretty disappointing. Thank you for the video. I can’t wait to go home and mess around.
I’d feel guilty if I didn’t say Thank you so much for the tutorial. I purchased one earlier this month, with no understanding of synthesis. I read the manual, but THIS video is unbelievable. Teaching you basic synthesis, as well as, what the LFO does. It’s easy to follow along, and lots of fun. Thank you so much!
Thank you. Gave me a jumpstart to using this guy. I bought it a couple of hours ago and after this video, I can get right to making sounds sounds/patterns. Can’t wait for the tips and tricks..
This is really helpful! I just bought the SH-01a and even when I wasn´t sure if I would need it (I have the SH-101 model in my Jupiter X and Roland Cloud), I love it! This little synth is so much fun and powerful and with your video I found tons of new things :D
This video is really cool. Didn’t need to skip and didn’t get board. Thanks! No I can make some cool patterns. The Roland manual is veeeery minimalistic.
Thjis video was AWESOME! So direct, to the point and FULL of USEFUL info, without any fluff! I learned tons from this video and am likely to reference it again, when I need to learn something I had forgotten about my newly acquired unit! Thanks so much for sharing and please keep up the great work! I am subscribing!
Thank you for that great video ; my friend !!! By far the best tutorial about SH-01A that i have seen !!!! Very usefull , once that i bougt one ; few days ago ! :)
Just downloaded your excellent patches for the behringer model d. One thing though you forgot to leave a huge dose of energy in your Dropbox. So I. Waiting until I can find some energy from somewhere and hoping my studio warms up some before I go put them to the test. Well done for making such great videos. Keep it up. The 101 was the first analog synth I bought way back in about 1989/90. Now I have the behringer version which sounds every bit as good, has midi, and the fm mod. Along with an improved sequencer.
"Made Easy", completely correct. Great and informative video mate, thanks for the upload! Just got mine today :) also good job putting text on screen before each guide - it meant I could skim through and find what I needed help with. Nice.
Thanks for this. I still don't understand why Roland buries all these features behind cryptic key combinations/menu diving that you would never be able to figure out just from looking at the front panel. One of the most appealing features of the original SH-101 was its no-nonsense, "what you see is what you get" interface with a sequencer simple enough for anyone to figure out.
Sir I'm really grateful for all 3 videos on this synth. Really clear and detailed explanations. Can't Roland give you an SE-02 to make more videos? Anyway thank you so much for uploading. Learnt allot
Great Video , many thanks to you. Just got started with this synth. One Question because i couldnt find anything about this option. How to erase a pattern or a sequence. ?
Thanks this is the best tutorial for the SH 01A without a doubt, why yours always shows the tempo?, my shows only lines when the midi cable is connected
Maybe there is a drum machine or computer DAW in your MIDI chain? MIDI clock would get carried on to the SH-01A, causing it to automatically switch over to slave mode.
Thank you for the great explanation! I have a question you may be able to help me with. If I have a sequencer connected to the midi input, will the SH-01A's gate output mirror the external sequencer's midi clock rate (e.g. 24 ppqn), or will it put out clocks based on the internal note lengh setting (e.g. 1/4 notes, 16th notes, etc.). Thanks in advance if you are able to help!
The SH-01A default setting for Midi Clock Source Sync is "Auto", which means incoming midi timing would over-ride the internal clock. This behavior can be changed by in the system settings so the SH-01A is either always using internal clock or the LFO. Whatever the master setting - the SH-01A sequencer also obeys its own resolution "scale", change this by holding down any arpeggiator button and turning the tempo knob..
Sorry to let ya down bud. Press MENU, press 4, turn the tempo dial until it says SYS. Press 1 to confirm item to edit. Default is AUTO which senses if there's incoming MIDI clock, otherwise uses its internal clock.
Hi G , your tutorial is superb for getting started with the sh-01a. I have a small problem with the settings on my machine, Basically when i play a note , it plays then the LFO button lights up and changes the sound. How do i stop this ? It's like i need to cancel the LFO setting or at least change something so the Rate button stops doing this. Can you help me ? Thanks Simon.
Your tutorials are excellent. Thank you so much! Silly question here. I just got my sh01a tonight and it seems like if I try to bring the lfo all the way down while sustaining a note it never quite settles down. In other words the LFO will restart after several seconds even when I think the LFO is off when holding a note. Does this sound like normal operation?
Thank you! amazing tutorial...I have a question, maybe u can help me: is it possible to assign a different sounds to each saved sequencer patterns? thankssssss
How do I make the factory preset permanent. You only explained to turn it off if you don't want to do it. I can't do any functions when the reset says done. I'm having issues when recording a pattern plays. Just can't figure out how to keep the reset the way it is.
Just got mine ( used ) and testing it following your guide - with the K-25M keyboard fitted and LFO rate down to zero - no led lit - if i play a note then i get a sound related to the key i have pressed but then randomly the rate led will light and the note will change without touching the rate slider control ? Is this normal for the 01a please ? A short press of the key - a crochet - the tone is ok .Great review thanks.
Can someone please explain to me how to get rid of this bug. When I use this synth with a sequencer, each time I stop the sequence, SH1defaults back to the default setting patch (Which is Bank 1 : 1). I've only started to explore this thing. Any help much, much appreciate!!! Thank you!
Has anyone tried to have Roland SH1a control other gear via CV / Gate out? Do you have to set a certain voltage for it? What is the most common / standard voltage? Please help. Thank you.
Hello everyone, I have a very huge problem with my roland sh01a. I want to transpose the sequence, but I really hate to push at the same time the button transpose and the key. So, does anyone of here knows how can I transpose my sequence if I don't want to press the buton transpose? Obiously everything using the internal sequencer of the roland sh01a
Can you do a pattern sequence like a rhythm track in the tr08. So like say I want to play pattern 1 twice then pattern 2 then back to pattern 1 or would you hade to do that manually like it’s live?
Great tutorial. thank you very much. One question: what is the best type of cable to use with the output? stereo 3.5 jack to mono 1/4 inch jack? or to stereo? balanced or unbalanced?
Depends what you're sending its signal. I send to eurorack and just use TS-to-TS 1/8" cables, or if you're sending to an amp this is just fine. When going to a mixer you'll have the opportunity to use TRS 1/8" to TRS 1/4", I haven't tried this yet. FWIW the main out is a stereo jack.
Great question. I didn't see in the manual any way to sync the LFO to the internal or MIDI clock. I've posted this question in the Roland Clan forum. If nothing else I could see it being added in a future update.
I don't believe it currently can do that. I do know that on the Volca Bass you can sync the LFO to the tempo, which can be driven by an external MIDI controller. Hopefully this can be done with the SH-01a with a future update, because is nice. :)
