Roland Space Echo Plugins Compared

A short video putting 4 popular Roland Space Echo plugins through their paces. This is a follow up to my previous video: • Roland Space Echo Plug... with the addition of the new IK Multimedia Space Delay.
I tried to match the settings and levels as best i could between plugins and i tried to use audio material in a way that best highlights the basic functions and sound of the plugins.
Obviously it's just RU-vid sound quality, but as you will hear every plugin has its own strengths and weaknesses, i'm not sure there is an overall winner, but I hope you like the video and i'm curious as to what you guys think.

Maybe because I've never used a real RE-201, it was Arturia and T RackS all the way for me. Hated the Reaktor model.

The IK one is the most authentic, probably could be considered almost 1:1 to the real thing. Arturia just has a good delay tone, but not really 1:1 what a Space Echo should sound like. Pretty much the, same with all their plugins, they seemingly get somewhat close, say this sounds OK in a mix, and put it for sale. Then every 3 to 4 years will put out a V2 that, is somewhat closer to the real thing. Lol

Thank you for the video. The IK one clearly sounds best as the others are saying. BTW, I have to say, Fruity Delay 3 (one of the many native FL Studio delays, but in this case the one with feedback saturation controls) can recreate the sound quite well!

superb video here! thanks for making this, i may now be sold on the outer space model - by the way, out of curiosity, if you have an answer do you have a favourite when it comes to intensity?

Thank you for your comment, I'm glad the video was useful. Overall use i like the outer space, i prefer the sound of the Ik but it is quite difficult to use, it gets out of control very quickly as it requires very small movements which is hard to do. It is for this reason i didn't end up buying the Ik. I like how the arturia takes its time to get intense, it's more reserved in that sense so has its own unique place in a mix and the reaktor overall is really good as well tbh. I hope that helps?

@@SoundSignals thanks very much for your comment, it is indeed helpful to me so i really appreciate the information - my thoughts about the comparison are quite similar to yours. the outer space model appears to be the best overall to me, particularly in terms of general use and the interface, and while the ik version may have an edge in terms of sound, the control does seem like an issue as you mention. thanks again for the helpful reply!

Does this one model the preamp of the infamous RE-301 along with the chorusing effect?

I need one that allows me to change the rate knob in real time. The knob needs to turn smoothly (without any segmentation or tempo sync). Any thoughts?

I found the plugin that did that the smoothest and felt natural, not stiff was Audio Thing's Outer Space. I would give it a demo. It's on sale atm as well 😉

Thanks, I’ll give it a try. I’ve also seen artists (Nils Frahm) use their hand on the tape itself to get a pitch change, but assume the emulations don’t allow that.

@@JedShura there isn't such a feature in any of the plugins, you would need some kind of pitch plugin for that

@@JedShura the best way to get that smoothest transitions without segmentation is to turn off the SYNC function on the plugin as well

Thanks for the demo, good test of all of them. All extremly usable with IK being the most authentic of the bunch. What I, wish is someone would model the RE-301 and it's amazing preamp. That model really changes the sound and adds something tangible to not only the delay, but the source audio too.

The saturation on IK is way more viby, fat and dirty and more realistic! love it

i have to say i agree, but i didn't connect with the sound of the spring reverb and the parameters acted too fast i found, the feedback decay was too quick to disappear etc
