The Roland TD-17 is a revolutionary new electronic drum set. It comes with high-quality components that used to be very expensive in the past. Now you get a modern low latency module with one of the best electronic drum hi-hats on the market for an incredible price.
In this review I will go over all features of the set, explain the components in detail and compare the 3 versions (Roland TD-17K-L, Roland TD-17KV & Roland TD-17KVX).
Special thanks to Roland for inviting us!

I agree with pretty much everything in this video. I can't remember a time when Roland priced it's kits so well. The TD17 line is way better than the competition. It was great meeting you too at the event :D

Clearly meant to undercut the Strike (non-pro) and it does so wonderfully. If they'd just got positional sensing on the snare I would have probably bought one (same reason I am not getting an alesis strike). My VST (superior drummer 3) has 3 zones snare position, and I want to use it!! :P
@Vdrumtips1
@Vdrumtips1 6 лет назад
misterringer what about a TD-12 full set or TD-20? I think they are both great for PS.
@misterringer
@misterringer 6 лет назад
TD-10 does it too I believe, and due to it's age and somewhat dated sounds can be had a bit cheaper than a td-12 or td-20 (still 2k to 3k every time one pops up). I know I wouldn't be able to split the tom inputs because of piezo/switch, but I'm not super worried about that. One thing I was curious about is if I could add a second 3 zone ride to a TD-10 module (or TD-20 for that matter if I found the right deal). Don't think I can just use 2 spare inputs for it, but I could have swore I've seen it on a roland kit before, but maybe they were using 2 modules and I just didn't notice. Thanks for the response and the informative videos (you and Justin :) )

Thanks! This was a great review! I'm converting a set to electronic now. Was holding off on buying a drum module until the right one caught my attention. I have been going back and forth between 3 or 4 but, the more videos I watch, the more I am leaning towards this module. It just seems like such a deal for 600 bucks.

This is by far the best review of the TD-17 line on RU-vid right now. I work at a music store in Canada called Long & McQuade Music and I just traded in all of my drum hardware, TD-9 brain and triggers for the TD-17KVX. I have been waiting YEARS to make a "EZ-Drummer stand alone" brain. The time is now! Thanks for this video. Really good content. I will share with every customer I talk too who is interested in this line.

Jim Cheseborough usually you have to have a laptop hooked up to your brain to play ezdrummer and superior drummer samples. This new kit allows you to load in your favorite toontrack sounds or kits from the SD card eliminating the use for the computer. Very slick

How did you find it? I’m thinking about getting the KV as well as a CY13. I used to have a td9 and didn’t mind the hi hat, and space is at a premium. Cheers
@autobotsNdecepticons
@autobotsNdecepticons 4 года назад
@@nic.e The ride is finicky. You have to hit the bell just right to get it to do the bell sound. Otherwise you just get the normal sound. Once you get used to it, it's easier to get it right consistently. Kick pad is good, and high hat worked fine for me right out of the box, but it was probably calibrated by the store/former owner. (Bought used from a second hand shop.) That said, placing the high hat stand becomes an issue with a double kick pedal and limited space on the 120cm x 130 cm mat, which I got and put on top of a 120 x 120 foam and rubber mat to reduce noise to neighboring apts. It's always gonna be a compromise. Tom and snare pads feel fine, but can be tricky to place due to the limits of the hardware. Same goes for the module. It really needs a better mount to give you more options. As for the cymbals, I got the old style hardware with metal booms, which work fine, but I have no idea about the newer version of the rack. Downside on the module is there's only one regular midi port, and it can't read 24 bit or 48khz wav so you can't just use raw tracks from a recording session to play along with. Gotta bounce to 16 bit 44.1. I tested the sample feature, but haven't had time to trim my own samples. Gotta cut off any empty space at the beginning to prevent delay on triggering. But it worked, so the option is there. Not really impressed with the stock sounds, but there are some fun ones in there.

The 6 to 3.5mm adapter is important.. I leave those in the jack of amps and stuff so I only wear up the cable from the headphone (wich is replaceble) instead of the actual jack port from all the plug\unplug !

Ahhh man I was starting to think I was all set on the KV model. Coming from only playing acoustic sets the upgrades at a nominal fee seem worth it vs paying more to upgrade later. Sounds like getting classic big rock sounds requires some work and software on the user's part if you really want to try and dial in your sound more. Thanks for the most excellent review.

Awesome review! Was hoping you made one! Few questions: 1. How does the user sample layering compare to 2box’s implementation? I mean, are they comparable in features? Same idea? 2. How could we share our perfect sample layers with friends that also have a td-17. Is it some “bank file” that we can send over the Internet? 3. Did Roland give u a free td-17 or a discount ? Thanks!!
@Vdrumtips1
@Vdrumtips1 6 лет назад
Jim Cheseborough hi, I cannot say how it compares to 2box. You can share your files via dropbox. No, I did not get a discount nor do I own a td17:)
@chezchezchezchez
@chezchezchezchez 6 лет назад
Ok. I found out the samples are "one-shot" not multi-layered like 2box. This means the samples sound exactly the same (besides volume changes) regardless of how you hit the surface!! This is inferior because 2box can have a totally different (let's say) snare sound at soft hits vs hard hits.
@Vdrumtips1
@Vdrumtips1 6 лет назад
Jim Cheseborough I agree, the sample feature is better on the drumit3 in this case and it has also 4 audio outs. But the triggering is never as good as with the TD-17, especially in terms of hi-hat. I heard that people can’t get the VH-11 to work without an adapter.

I have the TD17kv with and added cymbal, CY-13R as a ride using two connectors (rd1 and rd2), and my "old" CY-8 connected to the Crash2 supplementary input. Works much better with that ride. @@Vdrumtips1

I was looking at buying the td17kv as a secondary module to daisy chain to my td30 and sell off the pads that I wouldn't use, namely the pdx8 pads.

Average Jack Media I would not do this, rather sell your TD-30 for 1500$ and take the 600$ the TD-17 would cost and get a TD-50.

Vdrum Tips I'm Canadian, as of right now there's no way that's a good option. a TD50ks costs 6500 the KVS is 10G. even just the upgrade pack module, ride and snare costs more then what I paid for my entire Td30, $4300. The td17kv is priced at $1500 and I was going to sell off everything but the hihat controller, cymbal pads and module. to get the cost down. Or If I wanted a smaller kit just keep the pads for travel.

Congratulations, Is it possible to play the td17kv with the brushes? Or is there a sound already programmed in the control unit that allows you to get the sound of the brushes playing with the sticks? Thank you

Annie Panda Hi! I'm thinking about to buy the kvx type. Is it a good choice? Or can you suggest maybe a better buy? And I'm thinking about to buy a double pedal as well. Iron cobra HP900PWN or HP900RWN or Pearl Eliminator P-2052C? Ty for your answer.

You've shown kits in this video with many additional cymbals and drums. how can this be done if there is only 1 additional output?

I have just one question-for the extra equipment bit, don’t you also need a bass pedal?

How is the customization of this kit? My Acoustics kit setup is one rack tom, where my number 2 Rack Tom is my ride is and I use 2 floor Toms. Is this kit able to be set up that way?

Sure, you can change the instruments accordingly.

I wish they had kept the full usb like in the TD-K11 not the midi only. Plugging the phone in threw that keeps it charged etc and more options also for the pc etc. They should have upgraded it to usb 3.1 :).

there is a USB port in the TD-17.

@@Vdrumtips1 what I mean is the usb on the module is the b type (square and the other end on most of those cables is the A type ) not the A type & cell type on the other end that you can buy at the $ store or the one that came with the cell ph. :) The TD-11 had the A type. The B type is what the old day printers used :). It might work if I could get a Type B to mini B but not wanting to pay for a cable that I'd never have a use for if it doesn't work . They should have left the standard A period .

How mind blowing! The TD-17 for $1,000. Such a great value! ... 5 years later it's $2,000.

Usually, it is not Roland that ships them, but a distributer.

I know I sell a very limited amount of them .. Actually I just started selling them. Well frankly I haven't sold any so.. I sell the digital pianos too but .. Great products .. Roland said today that I won't see kvx for another month, I ordered them 4 months ago. Probably be longer too..they said they are in such high demand .. They can't fill the orders .. Because they are so back ordered . The kvx in particular.. Sucks for me, Great video though ..
