I have one of these. It's about 20 years old now, still works great. several of the expansion cards too. There's one with a bunch of 70's sounds on it. Couple of my favorite sounds, Soaring Saws, Sun Dive, and the French horn section sounds really great, from the orchestral card .
Nice demo! Never had a chance to play around with the 5080 back in the day, (I was too busy with my Yamaha and Korg monsters), but recently I was toying with the Roland Cloud version and decided I just REALLY! had to have the hardware. Just bought one today, can't wait for it to show up :-)
I have a Fantom-S and all the Xv5080 sound with de Editor Soft. It's amazing. All the JV2080 sounds are in the XV5080. So, i have a Jv2080, xv5080 and the Fantom-S, all in one machine : )
It's great knowing this synth will live on in the Jupter X / XM. I have a JD 990 and have always wondered if I want / need the XV. It's a fantastic box for sure though. Amazing playing as always!
Thank you very much! With the JD-990 you already have a fantastic machine with several similar style waves / patches. However the 5080 adds the ability to load SRX boards in addition to SR-JV80, sample playback, more effects etc., I'd also look at the Integra 7 if you're looking to expand the palette with more modern / realistic style samples
Hi, I'm from the 'future'. Just a tip if you want to have those XV-5080 sounds in hardware form and don't want to buy a second hand unit (if you can). The recently released Roland MC-101 (and 707) Groovebox contains all the patches of the XV-5080. The 128 patches of the USER bank of the XV-5080 are spread over the banks of the MC-101. The 896 patches of the XV-5080's Preset Groups A through G are all contained in The MC's Bank E, in the same order. The 256 patches of the XV-5080's Preset Group H (GM2 Group) are contained in the even larger Bank F of the MC-101. Furthermore you can have 4x those patches played on the MC-101 (it has 4 channels) and the MC-707 can even do that 8 times, as it has 8 channels. The MC's have about 4x more patches available, so the XV-5080 makes up about a quarter of the patches. The MC-101 is tiny and can even work on four AA batteries, so it is versatile and space saving. You can easily layer different patches when using external midi (set channels to the same midi channel). Editing patches on the MC-101 isn't really possible at the moment, though on the MC-707 it is, but that is quite a different (and more expensive) beast.
@@floridahiker1503 Thanks, you might be right, but from what I hear what Paolo plays here, they sound the same. The only gripe I have is you can't edit patches on the MC-101, but we might get an editor some day. Still, this is a great little box of sounds and a great option. I would love to own a real XV-5080 but I have no space, lol.
Agreed Marshal. They are simply gorgeous. I would say, they have defo stood the test of time across many genres of music. I dig all that sound from JD,JV to XV . Btw don't you have a Fantom ?. How does that stand up in terms of these types of sounds.
If it's anything like the 2080 you can build your own patches. You can start with a couple of saw waveforms (tones) and the apply octaves, fine tune, filters etc. Each patch can have at least four waveforms and shed loads of manipulation on each waveform then even more on the overall patch. These can then be saved into the user area. There are heaps of raw synth waveforms to choose from (saw, tri, square, PWM etc.) It doesn't have to be a ROMpler.
Licinius Varrus Not that I know of. The 5080 has a different sound engine. The converters sound better on the 5080 too. The stock sounds in the Integra are mediocre. The expansions are great that’s all I really use the Integra for. I’d use the 5080 for more synth based sounds over the Integra.
Dope! Thanks for posting this! Really enjoyed the GR700 Pad and NothrnLights. Fantastic sounds. The outro is killer. I could listen to an hour long jam based on those outro sounds.
Beautiful sir. Had to sell my 5050 but would eagerly try the xv softsynths as an appetizer. Cheers! Hoping you do a 01/W and K2500 vid fingers crossed!
Great Demos as usual 👍 Just a question, have you ever used the sample playback function on the xv5080? I've never seen anyone uploaded a video on this before.
Thank you, yes, others have asked the same question in the comments. I'll do a video on it, it's very similar to loading sounds from SCSI on any old school sampler.
Thank you, Dadrian - it's actually the "old gear" in this video :-D - it's the Canon 70D with Canon 20-35mm f/2.8 L lens - which has a cool "dark", more "vintage vibe" style look. But the previous videos have the newer video gear - Canon 6D mkII with Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM lens which is a lot newer and "cleaner" and sharp, but perhaps doesn't have the same "vintage vibe" of the older models
Dadrian Wilson Check the demo clips in post #87 here... I used JD-800 most with Strings Ensemble www.gearslutz.com/board/electronic-music-instruments-and-electronic-music-production/1204198-whats-best-synthesizer-quot-pads-quot-ever-made-3.html#post13174302
@@SynthManiaDotCom Neat. I'm liking the new trend of updating 80s equipment today. The sounds are still great, just need better interfaces and connectivity with smart devices.
Usually a sound that is suitable for playing chords to "pad out" the song. They often have slow attacks and they don't get in the way of more opinionated instruments. In older songs (and still in many new ones) it's an organ. String machines were suited to the job and were very common during the disco era when polyphonic synths were unobtainium.
This reminds me that I need to play with my JV-1080 (w/ Vintage Synth and I think a Drums card) some more. I should probably replace that capacitor on the expansion cards that sometimes makes them blow up, though.
Hello good afternoon sir I just bought me one of the Roland xv5080 for some reason I can’t get no sound out of it so can you please do a video on how to get sound from it I think I connect it right but there’s no sound coming out
@@SynthManiaDotCom I never used one before so if you can make a video on that would be great I put midi out from my keyboard to midi in on the xv 5080 and audio out R n L from xv 5080 to the speaker but still can’t get the sounds from it
Yes, it was truly an amazing unit when it came out, and still valid. The sample playback feature was a nice addition as well, if there aren't many comments or reviews about it I can do one.
now Roland Cloud contains it. I was playing with it. its pure year 2000 but I like it it has a lot of good useful sounds not so much other crap than other music libraries. I had a Quasimidi Technox for Prototyping in the 90th. today the xv 5080 is a much better option for me now.
@@ilocoss Can you explain to me how to get the 5080 or 1080 from the cloud with a one time purchase? I can't understand a thing from their product page.
Wilderness Music The Integra-7 has all the SRX boards included. But I’ve heard that that it doesn’t have the same waveforms from the XV series. I love my Integra. But I also love the XV series too.
@@deauvillevrienden It is the ROM's that are the complete sets of all the Roland libraries. If you go to their site that talk about the complete history all in that box.
@@samiam9059 I checked it out, all the patches in the above demo are in the Integra7, "OvertoneScan" is not in the XV-3080 but all the other patches are present, then "ClassicJPpad, Jet Str ENs, Chime PAd, SoftPadding, Paradise, Ethereal Str" are missing in the XV-2020 :-))
@@deauvillevrienden IF they are any that are not. The main thing is the rom samples that made them are there. I love the integra for being so inclusive with their history. Not too many companies took the time to offer that. I told them had they made a board 76 or 88 of it would of had a massive hit on their hands. Best regards
> When Paolo plays the pads, even a cactus on my window cries out of happiness Possible that is the answer: Paolo, @Jexus, @AnalogAudio1, @Ujie (musictrack.jp) and other cool demo recorders can improvise (or knows) some short melodies that sound good. Most of us listeners can't do it, suck a bit knowing it and love to listen demos.
This one is closer to the original JV/XP series although it was like at a hybrid point. The Integra is similar to the JP-80 gen / supernatural technology, and also has all the SRX boards built-in and a bunch of additional features
The Integra is around $1600 while you can p up an XV5080 on the used market I bet for $350, that's a big difference. The Integra has everything on it and more voices perhaps. The new Jupiter X or X-m modeling synth will have many roland models but again $1500 for the X-m and I think $2500 for the X. The Xv5080 gives you plenty of the Roland sound to add to a track for a very low price. Hard to beat. Careful if considering the 1080, 2080, 3080 I thin it was etc... The best sounding was the Jv880 as the outputs were very good, quiet and sonic. Not all of the line carried that quality output sound on. The 5080 though is pretty good output wise. The 1080 is more muted on the outputs. Also the 5080 has some midi jam up when using the drums card with the other sounds being played from a DAW. I can't use it for drums for this reason. But it sounds great for pads.
The Fantom XR was more modern and had a more modern, more precise sound. I have more than one thousand audio demos from the Fantom XR here at my HTML website: www.synthmania.com/fantom_xr.htm
Just do a factory reset www.sweetwater.com/sweetcare/articles/roland-xv-5080-initializing-xv-5080-restoring-factory-settings/ If still no sound, take it to a repair shop.
No, it's my mixer, I have a couple of channels that act up, I need to clean/fix them. Hopefully it doesn't happen in too many spots during the eight minutes.
