This watch is superb, whoever says the handles are too short has not seen it in person, they are the perfect size to “merge” with the white gold numbers, incredible. Now the Mk2 does the opposite and covers them. Mk1 Is just perfect!

Think we might be in the minority but i agree. I find the mk2 very boring and sterile, and that can be said about most modern Rolex sport watches in my humble opinion. Not so much the mk1. I am probably biased though! 😂

Great watch. Mk1 all the way for me 😂

For me the long hand version mk2 looks very much better than the mk1. The Explorer mk2 is because of the 39mm size the best looking watch Rolex has ever released. Now they gone back to 36mm, but this watch is for girls only!

Tbf I disagree. My preference is for the previous gen 36mm. I like the 39, and the new 36, but think the older gens have more character and cool, and the new gens in all the models are a little cold. I like my 39, though I see why people are wary of short hands, etc. I have a small wrist, so I like the 36mm size.

@@TimeandTalk The small 36mm size of the Explorer 1 is one reason I own an actual 41mm Submariner Date.

Thanks for the brief explanation, also.. any idea if the surface lacquer is more matte on mk1/2 vs the 114270? Thanks!

Good question. I’m not sure tbh. I will look into it, but in pictures I can’t see a difference (just done a quick Google and seems they are identical, but there may be a subtle difference I have missed).

@@TimeandTalk Thanks! I'm asking that because my wife has the 114270 and even though I love explorers, I could never get over the very high glossed dial combined with 36mm case. I'm not a big guy, but even that felt way too dressy for a supposed sport watch. I'm hoping that the 39mm's rumored matte dial would solve this issue for me.

@@popcorny11 yes from what I can tell they are both matte, but try them (is that’s at all possible!) to compare!

Rolex will not replace the dial and hands unless requested and if they do it is a one off deal.

Do you mean one off as in they won’t change it back to small if you change your mind later down the track?
@Milofchg
@Milofchg 3 года назад
It’s a trade in but you pay extra for the new dial & hands. You won’t get your old dial back. Rolex will only do a dial & hand swap when you take it in for a complete overhaul. Which is about $1300 plus parts. I know for Date Just you can change dials and bracelets as long as it’s the same reference/movement (fluted bezel for dome bezel... Roman numeral dial for stick marker dial). If you think of it. It’s about the same or slightly more to just sell the MkI then pony up the extra $1200 for a new MkII on Chrono24. Or cheaper if you sell the MkI then get one at an AD.

In 40 years later, Mark 1 will be more rare and expensive because of imperfections and rarity of it
