EVERY other W&W RU-vidr has mercilessly bagged the gold DS. Not you of course, you contrarian! I’m with you; it’s the ultimate expression of what Rolex is about and it’s breathtaking.
Always enjoy your candid discussions! As for Rolex and “trophy” status, I think it’s true. This year the contrast between Rolex and Tudor at W&W shows Rolex moving upmarket, embracing their trophy moniker and letting Tudor be the people’s brand. Exception is the new GMT, which offers a throwback to the black bezel steel GMT for purists. It will be popular, as many of us still seek the tool watch, with a touch of trophy… rather than the other way around.
I agree with everything you said here. There is something appealing about a big chunky gold rolex. Although I am in the same boat as you as far as nit being willing to part with that much money over any watch. I will surely admire it from afar though.
I think you have the best deep Rolex diver in the SeaDweller. If I were going to get an abyss diver (remember that movie?) I'd go for the Omega Ultra Deep Summer Blue with the easter egg dial. I will admit that I don't think the all gold Deep Sea is deserving of all the disdain it is receiving, I mean, why not? Like you say, it's a Gollum watch.
Watch affliction wight be a better term! Glad you like the intro Ned. It's just a random guitar intro that I downloaded off my Samsung video editing app. No breach of copyright! 😆
I'm beginning to wonder whether Rolex's focus on precious metal/ high retail price point models for '24 is yet another quiet move to further suppress and frustrate the grey flipper market for '24. (Reduced grey flipper profit opportunities for low price point steel models for '24)
Yeah, the solid gold deep-sea is definitely my most favorite Rolex they have ever made by far. I am a huge fan of gold watches. I have a large wrist so it would be amazing to have something like that. But not gonna happen lol...
I’m not making this up but I actually have the money ready to buy it but none of the authorized dealers have seen one yet. There are waiting lists for the watch and I’m hoping a dealer calls me soon
I actually quite agree with your last statement that they might actually sell more stainless steel ones because of this gold one. But regardless, it's too big for my wrist and I'm never able to wear it out. However, if I do feel like a giving a nice big middle finger to anyone, I'll probably wear this full gold deepsea to see them!
I bloody love Rolex , you don't own a Rolex...they own you !!. Has anyone who has a Deepsea ever thought " jeez I wish they would release one in full yellow gold " nah of course they haven't , and now Rolex have . Gotcha !!!. Kings of marketing always. Will folk consider the st/stl after seeing the Gold version , bit like considering a Boxter after wanting the 911 , I doubt it Mark.
My Gollum's watch is a complete and fully original 6542 - with radium/bakelite bezel. Not a daily driver, not a weekend piece either, only one which you wear at home now and then, admiring it, because you know it is irreplacable, fragile, and of stratospheric value in terms of desirability. I call it one of my unattainable ones, I will never be able to get it. But... once or twice in the collection journey, an unattainable may appear, the opportunity will likely never come again. That's when you must strike. I don't have the 6542, but I managed a year ago to get another unattainable one.
@@TheRandomWatchDude was only joking mark but watched your sotc video and you have some lovely piece's there..,. I think if you're a watch enthusiast Rolex will always be in the picture somewhere anyway mate all the best from the UK 👍
Hi Mark all Rolex are trophy watches just some are a little bit more bling than others.i was in the ad yesterday having this conversation about the gold deepsea and even he didn't no what market that Rolex was aiming at. I do really like this watch and would suit me as I have big wrists but as you say will not pay that sort of money also looked at the new wight speed master I was very much underwhelmed to dainty wearing smaller than it is boring and a good unisex watch if you have small wrists. interesting video as usual thanks John.
You can't go wrong if you buy that watch. It will always be worth more than you paid for it, and is such a nice big lump of a watch. Imagine the weight of it!
Ahah! Argentina vs. England, 22June 1986...La mano de dios! Today's analogy with Gollum is quite funny...The metamorphosis that power produces in the minds of some people...By the way, it looks like you're still in the middle of Rolex purgatory! As for me, I have to say that I don't like the new gold deepsea (that brick...), I find it tacky and exaggerated. But I think that was precisely Rolex's aim in making and marketing it....Cheers!
I really don't considèrent à trophy watch it is going the way of the yach master 2. I own ddsd JC and sd43. The dssd JC has thay beautiful unusual dial. But the gold has not a special dial it is like the blue dial is similar to the gold submariner.
