One of the best stories on RU-vid about a man and his cherished Rolex Submariner.
It is exactly 37 years today that I purchased my wrist watch, the one commented on by so many RU-vid viewers. So I thought I should do a story about it. It is a Rolex Oyster Submariner 1680 date in stainless steel, purchased 8 January 1981. I wear it every day.

Great testimonial ..... I bought my Rolex in 1970 for scuba diving. Overseas with the USAF, spare time was sparse, but it did allow me to do some diving. Dive watch selection was very limited. It was either an Omega or Rolex watch. I wanted the Omega, but my finances could only afford the Rolex. That was about two months pay, plus a bit more. The model was the Submariner (1680) and it worked accurately both in and out of the water. That particular model had the word Submariner spelled in "red letters", which became significant decades later. I still wear the Rolex and find the habit of putting it on and off as automatic as breathing. It still amazes me the cost of servicing the watch is about 4x the purchase price. I was once offered a new Rolex Submariner in trade for my Rolex Submariner by an employee of a jewelry store that sold new and used Rolex watches. I declined the offer without hesitation. The watch has a ton memories attached to it. Can't repurchase those.

I watched this video a year ago, and again today. What a story!! I grew up with Rolex, because my father em was a diver, and my mother bought him a GMT Pepsi in ‘71. I love the stories behind people’s fascination with Rolex, and I love the brand more and more every year. Cheers mate

Great story! Mine’s very similar. I bought my steel/gold Oyster Perpetual Datejust in the summer of 1981. I’ve worn it almost constantly since, working, playing, swimming, sailing, even when sleeping - apart from when walking in dodgy areas of big cities, and for a time in the 90s when there were so many fakes around that wearing a plastic Casio was actually a cooler fashion statement. I have owned other watches, including a brand new Omega Speedmaster which lost a hand within a couple of weeks and kept poor time. I sold it at a big loss after a few months. The Rolex has never need anything more than routine cleaning and oiling in 40 years. It still looks like new apart from occasional scratches on the glass which I get polished out from time to time. Like you, I have kept the box, the booklet, the receipt (more than a month’s salary) and the seal/tag. The only other thing I own that I have used so constantly over such a long time is a stainless steel sailor’s knife that I bought in 1969 when I was 21.

Great story Andrew, I managed to buy an old model Seadweller when I retired and it has had a lot of adventures above and below the waves since then. They have definately gone up in cost since I first wanted one in the 80s. Keep safe and thanks for the videos!

If the fact it's losing two minutes a week is bothering you, it's a simple and inexpensive process for a watchmaker to regulate it. These days they use a machine called a timegrapher, it only takes a few minutes and they should be able to get it to within +/- two seconds per day. At -17 seconds per day it's certainly out of spec for a Rolex.

Loved it..though I bought my Sub three years ago last month, I know every feeling you described to the point that I was able to complete many of your sentences :) But, it was no fun hearing you teasing your brother about his Omega cause yesterday I picked on up - Speedmaster 3861 (and I know it isnt a Rolex!)

Oh dear! Replaced the faded that lovely tritium dial as well as the bezel!!! That would have devalued the watch substantially. The problem with Rolex is that they insist on new service dials and new bezels!

I'm an overlander and a watch lover, so I have enjoyed many of Andrew's videos, but this is by far my favorite. I own several nice watches, but my most special one is a 1972 Rolex Explorer 1016 that my father bought new and then gifted to me 20 years ago. After a recent service it keeps perfect time. Andrew - if you read this, get your watch serviced buddy. After a good service it should keep time within just a couple of seconds per day. Two minutes per week is not good time keeping for a Rolex.

Bought my submariner 16610 and Range Rover Sport Supercharged V8, both in 2007. Today the sub is still on my wrist. And the RR? Probably in a junkyard somewhere in NSW. Love your story Andrew. Sadly, modern Rolex and Land Rover have both lost their souls.
