In this video I go over placing a combat map, setting up monsters, determining surprise, and rolling initiative. I go over a lot more, but those are the main points.
Leave a like if you enjoyed the video and provide feedback if you have any questions or tips!

Since we're dealing with square grids, if you see something like "79x80" pixels after doing the alignment, just change it to 80x80 and it'll match up perfectly.
@Rougesteelproject

From the future: If this doesn't work and the grid overshoots or undershoots the roll20 grid, use the "set dimensions" option to nudge it. (By Stretching/squishing it) Just be sure to line up the top corner with the grid every time you change the dimension

@Mack D, you have to finish configuring your token as you want it before adding it to the character sheet. Otherwise it will only persist the settings that you had configured on the token at time of attachment to the character sheet.This is why when you went to drag the additional goblin onto the map it was missing the HP bar. If you need to update a token in the future, you can make the necessary changes to the token, delete the token from the character sheet, select the updated token and associate it with the character sheet.

With respect to surprise ... In the first round of combat, individual combatants are surprised if they failed to see ANY of the opposing side. This requires all the opponents to be hidden and their Dexterity (Stealth) checks to beat the Passive Perception of the combatant. If a combatant spots even ONE opponent, they are not surprised. Surprise means a combatant can’t move or take actions during their first turn of the combat, nor may they take reactions until that turn ends. (See Chapter 9: Combat: Surprise). This means that, since one of the archers was spotted, there is no surprise, right?
@adamupson6417
@adamupson6417 4 года назад
@@SilverDragonAcademy In this situation, the party isn't surprised as all of their passive perception are higher than the lowest stealth, so they all know their is a threat. If the Fighters Passive Perception was 8 then he would have been surprised but the rest of the party wouldn't have been. However the other goblins are hidden so they will still have advantage. As you say this can get complicated though and a lot of rolling, I tend to roll a single stealth per creature type for the ambush so it's either a surprise or it isn't which is simpler although not correct as raw. nice video's I'm doing some checking to make sure I haven't missed any roll 20 features.

By the way if you have the token linked to a character sheet, rather than going into the journal and finding the sheet you can shift + double click the token and it will automatically open up its character sheet which makes things a lot easier. Also it’s a good idea, at the very bottom of the NPC settings or somewhere in the normal character sheet settings to turn Dex Tie Breaker on, that way it will add your dexterity as a decimal at the end of your initiative (if you roll a 13 initiative and have a 11 dex then your initiative is 13.11) this way if multiple characters get the same initiative it uses their dex to see who goes in front of whom.
@TheShadowFellan

Mack D Also just came back to this video again because I’ve got a couple hundred hours on roll20 but there are still many things I’m unsure about. While rewatching it I found that when you were rolling initiatives you didn’t see but across from there HP on the NPC sheet towards the right is a dice icon that says Init that is the initiative button for NPCs Also I was also unsure about the linking of HP as I have also struggled with the problem of all the enemies taking damage because they are linked to the same sheet. The best way I found to do it is link them all to the character sheet, set up the other bars (I use blue as AC and red as Passive perception) and then leave the HP bar as ‘none’ and instead when you place the monster roll for its HP and then manually add its specific HP to the bar that way the HP isn’t linked and won’t change all of them at once. Thanks for this video though it helped me a bit, although it wasn’t fully what I was looking for but nice tutorial anyways :)

roll20's default grid size is 70x70 pixels. So you can change grid size in page options menu to fit your maps grid size if you know what your map's grid size. Most common grid size for maps are 50x50 pixel (fantasy ground's default grid size) or 70x70 pixels. Another easy method is just check your maps pixel size and match your page size in roll20 to that. anyway good videos

Small correction. After you placed monster tokens individually they still share HP. You need to change atribute to none after placing them to remove connection between them without removing default values
@izzmot

i dont get it. they way you set it up, all goblins share the same HP. so if one gets hurt and you enter the new value, all others get hurt too. how do you set up multiple individual goblins from the same source?

New to Roll20 here but If the name 'Goblin Ambusher 2' is in the Turn order, and that's visible to the players, it'll be reasonable to assume that there are at least two Goblins. In which case, you best number your goblins randomly, say 98, 34, 12 and 56, for example. This has the small advantage of scaring the **** out of players who don't yet know how you do things. Obviously, if the turn order is not visible to the players thena ll this is moot!

I'm sure you've figured this out and plus it's been 3 years - but the reason all the goblins lost hp is because you set the bar1's link to HP, which means that any goblin that is associated with that same character sheet will reflect any hp change (positive or negative).

when you have all of those tokens represent the main character, when you change hp of one it will change all of them. you have to make them all represent generic tokens rather than the main token and then you can leave the character sheet open to use the abilities and resize it so its all one long column to save screen space.

A little aside, there are no Surprise Rounds in 5e RAW. A creature is under the surprised condition, and this condition ends after their turn. If they win initiative, they don't get a turn in the first round of combat, but they will not be surprised during the enemy's turn. Unseen Attacker is still relevant, ofc, but some character features only apply to surprised opponents.
@nakulrao8271
@nakulrao8271 4 года назад
@@SilverDragonAcademy It's almost the exact same thing. A creature that is surprised still gets their turn, they just don't get to do anything ON the turn other than remove the surprised condition. For example, a third level Assassin Rogue would not gain the benefit, by RAW, of their Assassinate feature against an enemy that rolled higher than them in initiative, even if the enemy was surprised. At the end of the day, it's up to DM interpretation anyways, so really it's up to the group to find a method that works. Thanks for the videos! I learned a lot and you definitely cleared up a lot of roll20 questions I had.

You need to make sure the tokens are "generic" when you open the default token. Roll20 thinks that one monster and that one token are like a PC. Where only one of them can exist at a time. Drop the monster down and open the token settings. Make sure it represents "None / generic) instead of that monster.
