Rule 1 with new skates: Yep...adjust, adjust, adjust! I have seen SO many people at the local rink (not many outdoor skaters in my area other than my family and friends) get those "shiny" new skates, throw them on, lace them up, head onto the the floor....and promptly fall. One of the rink guards even "yelled" at my daughter's friend to let me adjust their skates...he finally relented after me asking if he needed help doing so..a couple times. Got them dialed in for him - trucks loosened, toe stops tight...and wheels loosened! He realized he was actually SKATING...came back..."Is THAT why I was going so slow???" Umm....yep! If you're getting skates, get a tool (or two) to make adjusting easier. If it's meant to be loose, make sure it's loose (wheels). If it's meant to be tight, make sure it's tight (toe stop/jam plug). Trucks can be trickier as everyone is different...and it can depend on where/how you skate, too. For all circumstances, I actually prefer my backs JUST tight enough that they don't squish the cushions. However, for my rink skates, my fronts are loose enough that if I go up on just my front wheels, I wobble. I don't do toe work on that pair as I mostly skate speed in those. My park and derby skates, the front trucks are a bit tighter. My rhythm/JB skates are even tighter, as toe work is part of the skating style, can't be wobbling around while doing that style of skating. It's dangerous. You just have to find what's "right" for you. Get your skates, crank the trucks as tight as they'll go without squashing the cushions - do a lap (around the rink) or skate from Point A to Point B and back (tree to tree at the local park...3 or 4 driveways down on your street...however you want to/can mark those two points) - then loosen each kingpin nut about 1/4 to 1/2 of a turn...repeat until they feel good to YOU. I know it sounds a bit intimidating, but even those who just got their first pair of skates - and have NEVER even been on a pair before - *will* "know it when they feel it".

What brand are your knee pads? I like how they are low profile
